comment:This SEL1855 is a kit lens included with a mint condition silver NEX F3. The retail price is $300, $50 less than the power zoom 16-50 OSS, but that lens is often on sale for the same price. These are selling used for about $75-$150. There is also a more basic, non-stabilized 18-50 F4-5.6 that is the kit lens for the A3500 which is not listed in the Dyxum database and not available separately. "MADE IN THAILAND"

This lens optically reminds me of the Carl Zeiss 16-80 and Sony DT 16-105 lenses--very sharp in the center of the frame wide-open at all focal lengths, but fairly curved focus plane especially at the long end. It performs better than my current beat-up DT 18-55 SAM II at most focal lengths. It definitely has better center sharpness than the 16-50 power zoom, especially at the long end.

F3.5 at 20 mm
F4 at 32 mm
F4.5 at 44 mm
F5 at 54 mm

This lens is optically faster than the other APS-C kits lenses, despite the 49 mm filter size and small front element. It matches the speed of the CZ 16-80 at most focal lengths. Only at the very end does it show F5.6.

Low distortion seems to have been a design goal of the early NEX lenses including this zoom. There is a moderate amount of complex barrel distortion at 18 mm, minimum distortion at 24 mm, and increasing pincushion distortion at longer focal lengths.

It looks and feels better built than any of the A mount APS-C zooms. Though the plastic mold seams visible on the extending barrel belie that impression.

Overall an impressive kit zoom.

positive:Image quality compare to PZ
49mm filter
Traditional hood
No need for specific camera to get decent jpeg image quality
fairly compact
OSS
negative:not pocketable
no distance scale
comment: I am always impressed by the performance of this lens. For a lens this small with OSS, it can't be beat. It doesn't deliver complex distortion and corner interference without jpeg correction, though it does distort (correctible in post). It has good sharpness in the center and has an excellent and well tested range (~28-80mm) range on full frame coverage. It has a solid build for it's size and it's barrel is clad of aluminum instead of plastic. It works well.

Nothing much to compare as lens available to E-mount is limited.

comment:It's a kit lens. It's sharp enough, but the primes listed above are sharper than it at their respective focal lengths, as to be expected.

price paid:€85 (used)
positive:It was cheap, it has nice build quality (I rated it #5, because I always am amazed by it's build for this low price).
Has OSS!
negative:It isn't really light weight, or small. Focus isn't bad, but also not the fastest in the world.
Sharpness and colour could be better, but aren't bad either. The contrast could be better though.
Lens hood was lost, it get lost quickly and is expensive new. Bought replacement for a few euro's, but that doesn't fit and look as nice as the flimsy original Sony.
comment:This lens is nice to have. Get's you started with the NEX system. I used it more than 70% off time, just because it's handy.
But the SEL50f18 and Sigma 30/2.8 lenses give better results.

compared to:SAL 16-80 CZ. No more zooms for comparison at the moment. 16-80 is great compared to 18-55, but this little lens is still good kit lens.
price paid:Kit for NEX-7
positive:With sharp centre and great colors OSS lens. Lightweight and easy to carry. Build qualitiy is good compared to older a-mount cheaper lenses. This lens is modest for 24MP sensor, better for 16MP sensor.
negative:Nothing really.
comment:Can be used as everyday lens, if you do not ask much from cheap kit zoom. Good to crop the centre area, when wide open, but probably up to 2/3, not more.

I have replaced 18-55 with 16-50 because of pancake design.
