comment:On the Sony A7 with LA-EA4 it is light and small lens but the focus speed is applicable only for portraits or more static issues. For sports, dancing and the like it is useless glass. The sharpness of 1.4 is unusable, the inclination is improving, from 2.0 it is excellent. Great color rendering! If you want 50/1.8 on FF you can use Minolta 50/1.7 and it will have same results and you save your money.

comment:I purchased this great prime lens used. Can't believe how sharp this lens is. If you own one of the newer A99ll like I do, you'll be surprised on the detail that this old beauty does and also all 399 AF point appear too. If you need a leather case for it, I use the Minolta LH-1031 instead of the LH-1011 that came with it.. As it will accept the lens and hood together.

comment:Bought it on sale in Jessops a few years ago; haven`t been using it too much on my APS-C camera due to its quite heavy front-focusing; interestingly enough, it didn`t need any micro-adjustment on my A7 + LA-EA4 combo; now it serves as my normal lens and I`m happy with it; I was positively surprised at its focusing speed

positive:* Very bright/fast 50mm prime.

* AF speed is slow for the lens.
comment:As a previous owner of the Minolta 50/1.7, I had really high hopes for the Sony 50mm/1.4.

This lens is fairly compact. It will DISAPPEAR when mounted on a A77/A99 with vertical grip. It is very light.

This lens works very nicely in tough lighting conditions. Though at 50mm on an APS-C, it's a bit long, not wide enough. On a full frame, I find the fall-off in the corners to be very noticeable.

The lens' focusing ring up front is very small and very thin, making manual focus with this lens to be a bit of a pain. The wiggle and give does not help.

I found I missed the pull out lens hood of the Minolta 50/1.7. The provided plastic lens hood often added bulk and would twist off easily.

When the above issues were not at play, I found the images taken with the lens to be sharp, provide good subject/background separation, and were pleasing.

The AF gears on the lens are noisey, which greatly detracts from video shots and for when you want to remain in the background. :(

I find myself thinking fondly of the Minolta 50mm/1.7, Tamron 17-50/2.8, or one of the new 50mm lenses with silent drive systems.

This isn't a bad lens. But it's just not built as well as it can be.

comment:I and an experienced-fotografer friend compared very carefully images from this against those from my Sony Zeiss. The differences in sharpness and contrast were VERY small and difficult to see, but those we saw favored the Sony and not the Zeiss. Since the Sony is about $800 less expensive and 11 ounces lighter, what's not to LOVE? I'm keeping this and selling the Zeiss.

positive:This lens is compact light weight, its AF-D compatible. Its high IQ, and Minolta colours. Its Bokeh is outstanding.
negative:The lens isn't weather-sealed, and uses a dated screw driven AF system. Its a little soft between f/1.4, and f/1.8.
comment:I've used this lens for three years, its one of my personal favourites, and when used properly it can easily produce stunning results.

This lens is almost always attached to my A850, and its an excellent investment, and worthy alternative to the newer overpriced 50mm Zeiss.

Its colour rendition is rich, vibrant, skin tones are pleasing. This is a great lens for taking pictures of people. The bokeh is generally excellent, at f/1.8 and higher.

Its sharpness between f/2.0 and f/8 is excellent, and low-light performance is equal to its competitors, however it's slightly soft, and light fall-off is (barely) noticeable between f/1.4 to f/1.8 like all other "nifty fifties".

Its screw driven AF is dated, and is need of replacement. Its optical solution should be updated. With a updated AF system, and optics this lens could easily outperform the Zeiss.

comment:Always wanted a f/1.4 lens - this is my first one. At large apertures, it doesn't reach sharpness and contrast of the CZ 50, but at 1024 pixels that is not a big problem.
The size is very small, actually comparable to the Sony 16 f/2.8 fisheye! For the price a must have, great you don't have to use a flash in dark circumstances.
My girfriend has the 50 f/1.8 DT - will check later what the differences are between these two.
I gave a 5 for flare control, this may change later. It is not as good as the CZ but not bad either (like the 28-70 can be). Build is not bad, but looks a tad cheaper compared to the CZ and G lenses. Actually i like the basic design of the Sony version, it matches the fisheye well. For MF the focus ring is a bit small though.

Compact
negative:wish it had SSM
comment:After a little micro adjustment this lens is sharp wide open. It's compact and has fast AF (which just as importantly is also accurate), this lens ticks all the essential boxes.

This lens has great colour & bokeh and delivers a pleasing image.

There's nothing bad about this lens, just room for improvement such as SSM but the same could be said about the much more expensive CZ primes

Update:

I've had the chance to compare this to the sigma 50mm 1.4 there's virtually no difference in image quality. The sigma has slightly smoother more diffused bokeh but much worse flare control. The sigma has silent HSM which allows for MF override but the AF speed doesn't seem quite as snappy as the sony. If anything the Sony is the better balanced of the 2 lenses in the sense it doesn't really have any weaknesses.

comment:This lens turned out to be a big disappointment. Right out of the box it had a terrible back focus issue; I had to set micro-focus adjust to the max of -20.
Worse, though, it's just not as sharp as my work horse Minolta 50mm macro over f/2.8-f/5.6. At f/8 and above the two lenses are identical, but that's not why I bought an f/1.4 lens.
If there is any good news with the Sony lens, it's the fact that I don't see much performance difference from f/1.4 to f/2.8.

Good for taking photos of people. Handles low light really well.
Quick focus.
Light weight & small.
negative:None
comment:This is a beginner's eye review. I hope it will help another beginner. This is a nice lens for taking photos of people. It lets in a lot of light, but the focal length kind of crowds you in smaller indoor situations. I have a smaller sensor, (a55 camera) so, if I understand correctly, that means I get an automatic crop when I take a photo with this lens, which is probably why it crowds me when I take photos with it in small spaces.
I may be wrong, but it actually seems to me that the Sony 35 f1.8 is a little bit sharper. That's not really a problem for taking pictures of people, since most of us want and need a more forgiving lens. Also, this lens is much sharper than the inexpensive zooms I've tried.
This lens is small, lightweight and portable. Since it's only one focal length, it allows you to learn what it will do at different f stops. You could probably do the same thing with a zoom, but adding focal length to the variables would mean that it would take more practice to get there.

positive:Fast, sharp, Good bokeh
negative:None really.
comment:A great lens, everything you'd expect from a good 50mm. Its sharp, fast and has great bokeh. The bokeh is slightly smoother than the Minolta 50 1.7 when wide open.
I bought it for a bargain £150 brand new, however I sold its soon after, Why? in real life shooting I just couldnt see the diffrence in iQ compared to my old Minolta 50mm 1.7.
I found it a bit of a let down as I did expect it to be better.

works great with +4 Hoya filter
negative:plastic feel
annoying hood
MF ring
comment:This was an upgrade to Minolta 50/1.7, one of my most used lenses. My two major concerns with the predecessor was bokeh and softness comparing to 35/1.8, which I believe those lenses address very well. It is also a newer lens, with distance reading for flash.

I'm very pleased with it. Firstly, Bokeh is much more pleasing with faster and more precise AF. It is sharp from 2.0 and have a pleasing softness while wide open.Flare seems to be much better controlled, even with reasonably small hood. It does nice work in low-light conditions - one of the mayor uses for my old 50/1.7. I currently use it mostly for this purpose and partly street photography, as 16-50/2.8 seems to be now exclusively used by me as walk-around lenses. Its AF&sharpness is not in Zeiss league, but this would be asking too much I think. For the price it deliver a very good punch.

I dont like the plastic feel of the lenses, it seems solid but compared with 50/1.7 look like plastic toy. And hood is annoying and troublesome to mount. Also MF ring is annoying, too small and cumbersome to use.

I have recently used +2&+4 Hoya filter with very good results. Pictures are sharp, no visible distortion and final bokeh very much to my liking. This does not make them dedicated micro lenses but offer a possibility of such work should need arise. I find this better to Minolta 35-70/4 which where working superbly. Just don't forget to step it down heavy (>F10)

To sum it up, this is my favourite lenses now, always in my bag - due to weight, size and performance. Highly recommended , great improve over 50/1.7. I find focus lenght too long but this will change if I buy FF.

UPDATE: micro work, minor wording changes, compaision with Sony 16-50/2.8 , Minolta 35-70/4

Pleasant bokeh, worth it just for that!
negative:MFD too long
comment:I've owned this lens for about 9 months now, I hesitated for a long time before buying it as I already own the excellent CZ 24-70. Although I don't mind the bulk of the CZ, it's a treat sometimes to have a small light prime on my a900.

So do I regret spending GBP 330 on a focal length I already had available?.. not at all, the bokeh from the little 1.4 is definitely more pleasing than the CZ and the benefit of the 1.4 aperture is very useful. Only negative comments are the MFD is a little long, I really wish this could be improved, also as others have noted softness can be an issue at large apertures- I avoid anything larger than f1.7 when possible to ensure sharp results.

comment:This is a good version, acceptably sharp at 1.4 on an A700 and an A900. Other Sony 50 1.4 and Minolta 50 1.4 (v2) and 50 1.7 lenses tested previously weren't as sharp wide open.

Recent information has lead me to believe that the A55 may have some focusing accuracy issues with this and other wide aperture lenses such as the 35/1.8 SAM.

positive:- f1.4
- bit sharper than the Min 50mm f1.7 at f1.7
- extremely sharp by f2

negative:- at 1.4 the sharpness and bokeh aren't very appealing
- focusing grip is a bit too smooth
comment:This lens is so good for the price I can barely explain.

50mm f1.4... what's not to like! Fast, accurate AF on my a580. Bokeh is a little harsh at f1.4 but is beautifully smooth by about f2

It just makes low/practical light shooting a real pleasure

comment:This lens can be used wide open (F1.4), is little soft. On F2.0 is far better than MAF 50/1.7. However, colors look more neutral. The weakest point of this lens is the distortion.
