Good beginner lens which is very good for portraits. Plastic build quality does not feel very sturdy but again its a beginner lens which is sharp at f/2.8. At f/1.8 is not very sharp. |

Why the downer on the plastic moulded construction of modern Sony lenses. Will you refuse to fly on the Boeing Dreamliner because it's not made of aluminium ? |

One of best lenses for beginners. Excellent for portraits - with virtually no Longitudinal Chromatic Aberrations, excellent sharpness and creamy bokeh you hardly can imagine any better lens to start with. Especially because it's one of the cheapest A-mount lenses available! |

The Sony DT 50mm f/1.8 is a fantastic lens for photo. It's much better than all the kit lens except the Sony 16-50mm f/2.8. The 50mm f/1.8 is great for portraits photo work but falls short with annoying motor noises for video. |

At f/1.8, this baby is already really good but shows some vignetting. Allow it two more stops and the IQ is just perfect. Really nice and warm color regarding the fact that it's from Sony's cheapo line. If you're looking for a 50mm, this one is a no-brainer. |

I only had this lens for about 10 days. Returned it after I got the SAL35f1.8 lens which is better for indoor (wider). Slightly less sharp than 35F1.8 wide open. I miss it sometimes since I found it is easier to focus, better flare control than 35f1.8 and the image is less distorted (better for portrait). However I have now got a copy of 55-200 which is as sharp as the two primes. My best portraits are taken with 55-200. Color is not as good as 50f1.7. |

Forget all those gripes about the plastic mount, they don't matter if you treat your lenses with respect. This is a light, very light lens. It performs brilliantly. Surprised this lens is not scoring higher - I bought it on the basis it was described / reviewed as a portrait lens and it takes great portraits. Sharp, good colours, pleasant bokeh. Its one of the 'easy choice' lenses from sony so its good value for money, at the expense of a plastic body / mount.. its actually an attractive / well made lens but yes, I would have been prepared to have paid a little more for a metal mount. |

I wanted a low-cost 50mm prime (that could use the same 49mm filters as my 30mm Macro) for occasional low-light and portraits with my a55. I've only had the lens for week, but so far pleasantly surprised by it's sharpness and colours. Similar to my DT 30/1.8 Macro SAM, this thing feels low-rent like something from a cereal box, but the photos from both lenses speak for themselves. Very happy with my purchase. |

Plastic mount does not inspire long term confidence. SAM motor is not quiet. A little too long with crop factor for use indoors. |
|
comment: |
50mm on an APS-C is equivalent to 75mm which is just short of a good portrait focal length. It's also a bit long for use indoors. Sharpness can be good but short of excellent. Bokeh is good, but again not excellent. But as a basic prime it will beat most if not all zooms for overall image quality and is an excellent compliment to my Tamron 17-50mm f2.8. |

I used to own this lens prior to acquiring the Sigma 50 1.4. Have used it on the A200 & A700. Works better on A200. For the price and performance this is a must have lens for anyone starting out. IMO it def beats the Minolta 1.7. It is sharp, great colour and works great at nights. Best for portrait work. The only drawback is that the lens feels like a plastic toy. But one should not complain as this is Sony Easy Choice. Cheap and Good. |

Not as well made as the old Minolta 50 F1.7 by a long mark but optically better from the samples of the Minolta I`ve had, its sharper wideopen with better microcontrast - about on a par with the canon and nikon variants, the pentax models are best (MF or AF). Dunno how it behaves on Full frame but I`d expect it to be much the same as the Minolta lenses despite the DT moniker after comparing the edges on APS anyway.. |

This is my review as a beginner who is desperately trying to get better at photography. Simply put, this is the lens I always reach for. I am using a a200, so for an every day walk around it is probably a bit long, but I find it is the lens that gives me the most consistent results. Indoors this lens shines, the wide aperture saving many shots. I am drawn to portrait photography (my daughter now runs away when the camera comes out) and this lens is just awesome for that purpose. Being my first prime, I was shocked at the sharpness and quality of the photos taken with this lens... to the point that I immediately craved the prime quality on all shots.... which is why the DT30 Macro was also purchased. |

This was my first step towards taking photography seriously. I thought I was all serious just getting a DSLR in the first place, but MAN, Prime lenses.. serious business. I find myself getting into weirder positions all the time so I can use this lens instead of just busting out something with a more appropriate range like my 18-70 or 75-300. Absolutely the cheapest and best introduction to glass addiction. :D I spend like, half an hour every day rummaging Craigslist and Kijiji for anything with an f2.0 or wider. |

Excellent performer for the given price. I'm surprised with good image quality. I only worry that the plastic body (and mount) will be able to endure everyday wear and tear. Regarding the Smooth Auto Focus (SAM) - I find it obsolete in this class of lenses. Works same as screw driven autofocus (on my a200), and only complicates the build lens - one more thing to get broken. |

Picked this lens up when Sony had them on sale for $125 intending to resell it, but ultimately decided to keep it and sell my Mino 50/1.7 instead. The IQ of the Sony is just slightly better than the Minolta. Although the Minolta is built better, the Sony makes up with its weight. It barely weighs anything! Because it's so light, I'm fairly certain it could survive falls that would cripple the Minolta. The lack of a hood leads to some flare, but the coatings help quite a bit. Also, I'm not a fan of the SAM, which is loud and rather slow, though maybe it's just my copy. |

A 1.8 50mm @ 125 bucks? What a bargain. Plus giving it new life as a 75mm on my A700. I use it all the time. Such a fast lens. Love how narrow I can get the depth of field. It sharp through the whole range. SAM has it's goods and bads. Fast auto focusing on my A700 but very loud. Plus I like it has a distance scale on it. Unlike my other SAM lens. The all plastic construction is OK. Makes it very light weight. But, what do you expect from a 125 buck lens. I still wish it had a metal mount. Doesn't come with a lens hood. Not like it needs it. It controls flare very well. I guess it's cause the lens is recessed. I like it. |

|
comment: |
Since my sister in law owns one I had it on my camera for a short comparison session with my own F/1.7 from the beercan series. The sharpness is on par with the 1.7 and maybe a tad better. The IQ is more neutral and lacks the specific Minolta color touch (whatever has your preference). Build quality is quite OK only the plastic mount is a bit disappointing for the sense of quality. And why incorperate SAM in such a light portrait kin of lens? To my opinion the screw drive is as fast and SAM only makes this lens more complicated and prone to break down. |

I think this lens is a solid replacement for the old 50/1.7. I bought it with this purpose in mind and after a few days of changing my mind i decided to keep the Sony. My main issue with the lens is it's build quality.Compared with the '85 generation on Minolta glass(i have/had quite a few of those) this one feels like a toy and sometimes i feel like i'll break it if i'm rough with it... though the larger focus ring is a big plus compared to the one on the Minolta |

I decided to buy this lens instead of MAF 50/1.7 (old build, not round aperture) or MAF/Sony 50/1.4 (too expensive for APS-C usage only). I think it is very good choice as APS-C portrait lens. It is also useful in small distance shooting (not 'real' macro, but some details with 1:5 scale). SAM motor is noisy in case of problems/hunting. In 'typical' situations it is quite fast. I recommend this lens to APS-C users. |

Not quite sure I like this better than the Minolta 50mm 1.7 lens. It being plastic lightens the load, although marginally. Focus is a tad faster, albeit a bit less quiet. Wouldn't say noisy at all, unless you're in a quiet room and need to focus the entire range. Then it's a little loud while hunting. But not as loud as, say, the Beercan (70-210 f4). |

The SAM installed in mine is very quiet and I rarely hear it. A good buy. My next will an Ultra wide and that should complete my system. BTW, I came from Minolta then Pentax and now I am back, and I am not going anywhere anymore. A700 is the best! |

I like this lens a lot. It's very sharp at f/2.5, which I generally keeep it at most of the time. I think all the complaints about the build quality on this lens are unfounded: yes, it's plastic, but it feels very solid, and there's no way it's going to fall apart, or antything like that. It certainly feels and looks miles better than my 18-70 kit lens, which feels frankly horrible and extremely cheap. I love playing with the shallow DoF, and I can't wait to do some proper portraits using it (all I've done so far are self-portaits and candids). Overall, it's really a great lens, and I'd definately recommend it to anyone. |

This was the first lens I purchased for my A300 (came with 18-70 kit lens). Bought it a few weeks ago around the birth of my first son, and it has performed great as a low-light/indoor lens for baby pictures which the kit lens was not at all up to without flash. I'm impressed with the bokeh. Plastic mount doesn't seem to be a big problem in my opinion for such a small lightweight lens. Build quality is more than adequate for me, a non-pro. SAM is not a problem, but I don't think it is a real advantage over the screw drive. It sounds different but it's just about as loud. |
