ownership:I own this lens
compared to:28-70 kit - and tons of a-mount lenses
The 28-70f3.5-5.6 FE (kit) is a tiny little bit better at AF in dark environments (evening photography) the 24-240FE needs a tiny bit more AF-time (i can live with that).
price paid:752€
positive:Affordable (compared to the 24-105f4)
Good for a 10x zoom
best range is from 24-100mm
than things get less sharp
With enough light 240mm stays usable
72mm filter thread
negative:not among the lightest lenses
the hood is ok - but not as good as from the Sony-Zeiss 24-70
not super-sharp above 105mm - still usable (tests at around 160mm, 200 + 240mm).
comment:You have to upgrade to firmware version 4 onthe A7II to get good AF - i tried it with version 3.30 and AF was weak (lens firmware was already at release 2).
This review now contains the first batch of real test-shots, and i'm rather happy with the results.
I did some sharpness tests on my charts at the wall - i do believe this lens is at least on par with the 28-70 at first sight - real life tests confirm this thought.
There is a cashback at this moment (until the end of July 2018 of +/- 100€) - that's what made me buy it (got it at 750€).
I do believe this lens compares rather well with the 24-105-f4 offer even though it's not continous F4 - and we take the price-difference into account (40% cheaper) - i see the extra's above 105mm as a bonus, and it starts at 24mm instead of 28 - so The kitlens 'll be sold. The Tamron caught my eye - but the 28 was a no go for me - yesterday's tests confirmed that i want the 24-28mm reach.

positive:As an all-round lens 24-240 hits all the marks.
negative:a bit heavy
comment:I give this 10x zoom lens high marks because it seems unfair to compare this lens to primes or shorter range zooms where it is designed to be and performs very well as a compromise lens.
The 24-240 is the only full frame Sony lens I own and it is mounted on my A7ii ninety percent of the time; only coming off when I need something wider, faster or longer. As a alternative to trucking around a bag full of glass it worked out quite well for me.

positive:Zoom range, high image quality
negative:Bulk, weight. However, it feels quite OK on my a7R2 with batterygrip.
comment:I've been looking for a superzoom lens for my various cameras--Sony a99, LOTS of Canon EOS fullframes, Sony a7R a couple years ago, Samsung NX1--forever*. This is the first one I've found. Recognizing its basic nature--as a superzoom--it's excellent. Its distortions and corner darkenings are fixed instantly and automatically, in-camera for JPGs and in Adobe Camera RAW in Photoshop for RAWS, and the results are VERY nice. After renting and testing this for about a week, the snob in me wanted a higher-IQ lens and bought a new Zony 24-70/F4. Wrong lens--or wrong copy; this 24-70's IQ was NOT AS GOOD as the 240's over the lengths of the 24-70, so it'll be sold and I'll keep and buy the rented 24-240 (from LensRentals.com).

To summarize, this lens is FAR better than its reputation on the 'net indicates, or at least my copy is. Coupled with the Zony 16-35/F4, I'm happy with two lenses covering a broad range of focal lengths.

* The closest I've gotten previously was the Zuiko 12-60 on an Oly EM-5 MkII, with an equivalent field of view of 24-120 on a 35.

positive:Well built, very versatile zoom range, very good IQ for a super-zoom
negative:Quite slow on the tele end
comment:It is a 10x zoom, so it is as usual for a super zoom a tradeoff. However it is delivering very good IQ for such a lens. Distortions are handled quite well, CA are very low, and it has nearly no flare problems. Sharpness in the Center is very good, and slightly stopped down also at the borders. At the tele end it disappints a little bit, but as raws still usable.

For me it is just a travel lens, in order to have an all-in-one with acceptable IQ. For serious shooting I have my primes.

positive:Super Versatile lens, starting at 24mm extending to 240mm
It is the travel lens I expected it to be.
Lens correction (in LR) functions very well.
At some focal lengths it is surprisingly good (round 70mm)
Price is a little high
negative:It misses focus often, hunts a bit finding focus, especially in low light(as could be expected).
it is slightly soft
The lens hood drops of easily. I secured with a piece of paper
Price is a little high
comment:I compared it to the three lenses mentioned above (fixed subject) at F/6.3 and F/8.0.
I bought it as a travel lens.It is heavy and build very well. I didn't notice any zoom creep carrying it. Because it's a heavy lens, I feel a bit uncertain carrying it around, hanging from the camera (A7), I find myself supporting the lens most of the time.
Given the versatility and (LR) correction I think it's a good travel lens.
