positive:Light
Small enough
Decent zoom range to start with
negative:It would be great if it went to 24mm on the wide end. There are other options for that anyway.
comment:Nice light starter lens for an e-mount FF camera. I'm very happy with the images I can get using this lens. I plan on purchasing higher grade lenses like the 24-105 G in time. I will keep this as a light weight option even then.

price paid:in kit with A7II
positive:compact and lightweight
Good AF, and enough sharpness for night photography on the A7II (tested at f8-13) on tripod.
nice stars for night photography
OSS
good focus at low-light on the A7II
negative:not always sharp at corners (the AF not being precise/sharp enough with the a7II during the blue-hour test f3.5-5.6 - at iso 100 on tripod - strangely enough i had less problems with it at f8-f13 - we'll have to test more of this).
when in a hurry the lens hood attaches not fast enough - it's fine but not perfect.
comment:I took +/- 120 photographs with it during an evening shoot. It's premature to make conclusions. For a kit-lens this is well build - 2nd hand we see 'm for 250 à 300€'s. At the boxed-list-price it's no real bargain anymore.

With the hood on it it won't flare unless the light comes thru the openings at one of the side openings. Another hood can fix this minor issue.

At this moment this lens-review is incomplete - i only used the lens in a certain setup (evening and night photography) and it performed very well at f8-f13. In case i need a light setup, no Ultra-wide - this seems to me like a good option.
It's tested at 24Mpix - at the A7R and RII / a6000 things may be different.

positive:small and light weight
useful zoom range even on APSC
low cost
negative:Edges are never sharp, even on APSC
comment:I purchased this lens for use on an APSC camera, thinking that the soft edges/corners noted in every review on a FF camera would not be an issue. Wrong. On-center, this lens shows excellent sharpness. Along the edges, however, every other zoom I own is better. Too bad, because there is a lot to like about this kit lens - small, light weight and stabilization.

Fast and silent focus
Very good central sharpness
Reasonable contrast and colours
Smooth zoom and focus rings

Difficult to get sunstars
Sharpness varies with focus distance
comment:After 1.5 years of use and 12000 images, I found it was about time I reviewed this lens.
TL;DR version: It is a great, light-weight, stabilized and sharp lens in the center but wider than 35mm, the borders can be soft depending on subject distance.
Long version: It is sharp in the center at all focal lengths and apertures. Therefore, for portraits, or objects placed in the center of the frame this lens is perfect. However, for landscapes and architecture this lens falls short in the 28-35mm range. At 28mm, sharpness falls of strongly towards the edges. At 35mm, this is greatly improved, and stopped down it is sharp from edge to edge. This holds up to 70mm where performance decreases slightly.
What many people forget is that image quality may vary depending on subject distance. I found that the sharpness was generally better when focused closely (MFD-10m), compared to focus distances closer to infinity. For example, compared with the legendary 55mm f1.8 at f5 (wide open for FE28-70), central sharpness is nearly indistinguishable whereas corner sharpness is slightly lower. Similar results were obtained when comparing it with the FE 35mm f2.8 at f4. This is very impressive. On the other side, corner performance wider than 35mm is not impressive. The Olympus OM 28mm f3.5 lens is better at all apertures. CA is minor and easily correctable. Distortion is there but manageable.
The colours and contrast are not as good as the Zeiss primes, which is to be expected. It lacks the T* coating which results in much more reduced contrast in general and specifically when shooting against bright light sources. It is also very difficult to get sunstars because the aperture stays circular even when stopped down considerably. Finally, the build quality is not bad at all; It is assembled with tight tolerances and the zoom action is very smooth. It also held up well against moisture and the rubber zoom and focus rings look and feel as new. My only gripe is the low quality feeling plastic used in the construction, though it holds up well. In conclusion, it is a fine walk around lens, but discerning landscape and architecture photographers, including pixel peepers need to look elsewhere.

positive:Light&compact for 28-70 zoom lens
Good lens flare control
Good against CA
distortion- easily correctable in LR
negative:Slow aperture- especially at tele end
Slow focus speed in darker places
comment:Nice and light zoom to carry around, great kit lens. It's not the sharpest, not the fastest and definitely not the nicest to touch- feels like my SAL 18-55 long time ago, and smells exactly like one too. But overall, for the price, I think, you can't go wrong with this lens. For me, this lens is absolutely enough and I'm not even thinking about 24-70 f/4 Zeiss lens, this does all things for me. If Ziess would be f/2.8, then yes, I'd probably consider it, but since it's just f/4, than no way, even if it's a little bit sharper (I don't know, just guessing as price is much higher), there is nothing you can't fix in post with this lens and get a decent image at the end.

Adobe LR profile corrects some distortion and cleans vignetting very well, little sharpening and images looks really good.

comment:This lens isn't as colourful as the other Sony E kit lenses and nowhere as the Minolta AF 75-300 f4.5-5.6 II. Sharpness is pretty good. The lens is cheap feeling but worth the extra when you buy the A7

price paid:240€ extra for Kit
positive:-Fast AF (especially for an E-Mount lens)
-Good price
-Versatile
-Contrasty
-Low distortion for a kit-zoom
negative:-nothing for the price
comment:It's much better than SEl18-55 and SEL16-50.
It has comparably high contrast and very good colors. Sharpness is adequate/enough especially for a zoom but below good primes of course.
On 28mm extreme corners show slight distortion and slight CAs at wide apertures, but it's better than I expected and I guess not very field relevant. Subjectivly this lens seems to have best performance around 40-45 but also good performance at the short and the long end. As the hood does only work well for 28mm there can be sometimes slight flaring, especially on studio work (sample http://www.flickr.com/photos/54671350@N02/11077320553/), but overall it's controlled very well for a zoom (better than most other Zooms I know). It's a very good lens studio work.
Build is very light but a little huge. For a plastic lens it's made quite decent. Haptics are decent aswell - it makes a lot of fun to use it.
It's the best kit-zoom-lens I've seen so far.
