comment:The seller listed this on eBay as being in near mint condition, but the lens has several problems including visible rust. The aperture mechanism and focus ring were both stuck hard. After some pushing and wiggling just one of the aperture blades is still stuck half way open. The focal length encoder is also not functioning, and the hood is missing. The optics however do seem to be in very good condition. "JAPAN"

The zoom mechanism is somewhat complicated and feels quite heavy but works smoothly and fairly consistently. The front element moves forward and backward slightly with zoom reaching a minimum between 28 and 24 mm. The rear element sticks out at 20 mm and moves forward about an inch at 35 mm. The front element rotates and moves forward with closer focus. The 77 mm filter threads are stationary with both zoom and focus.

The build feels substantial until you look closely. There are holes and gaps all over for dust and debris to enter the lens.

My closest comparable lens is my former Minolta AF 24-50mm F4. The Tokina has somewhat better image quality at the same focal lengths. It is pretty similar to the 20mm F2.8 at 20 mm and noticeably wider than that lens. It is better than the old 35mm F2.8 lenses at 35 mm. It is good enough on an APS-C camera that it could be used instead of an APS-C kit lens. Then again the 18-55 kit lenses have better image quality with much greater reach in smaller, lighter bodies.

comment:Super lens in spite of its limited zoom range. Stopped down
it is almost'prime' quality.

Lovely colour and bokeh. In this range probably the best value for money.

Highly recommended.

comment:Nicely built lens that produces wonderful results between f5.6 and f11. On either side of that range the image gets notably soft.

Nice design in that the front element is free to rotate but the filter mount does not.

Far better than either the Sony or Viv. In good light this is a lovely lens.

positive:-Well built, matalish.
-Razor sharp, heard that it is better than 2.8 version.
-20mm is enough for general wide angle shot.
negative:-When used it for a long time, some part become loose.
-Flare, even the hood still can't help too much.
-Tight zoom range (1.5x)
comment:This is the first experience between me and Tokinas. At first, I use it with my D7 and like it alot. I like wide angle and this lens meets all of my pleasures. 20mm is wide enough for me.

After I had DSLR, D5D, this lens still perform better that the kit evne FOV of this lens at 20mm compared to kit at 18mm is not so wide on APSC (x1.5) camera. I do love this lens over all of my lens.

Now, even my AF system D7 is gone and it is not enough wide for APS-C DSLR, I still use this lens everywhere I go.

For sharpness, images show it's very goog sharpness from wide open to the sharpest at arount F5.6-F8 (test on D5D because I perform perfectly on my film system).

The very bad point, in many ones sight, is it's flare welcome feature. For me, flare is not a problem, and I think that it make photos become real photos! (according to this, I prefer normal bokeh than round bokeh from circular apature).

Sorry for my bad skill in English writting.

Looks good with orange band!
Sharp
Pretty good colours, contrast
Good size
72mm filter like Minolta
negative:Bit heavy
Distortion of straight lines
Flare at times
AF not foolproof
comment:Smaller than a Sigma 10-20 but heavier. Bigger than a Minolta prime though. Tiny next to Sigma 15-30!
Chunky, solid build and looks right on A700.
Pretty good MFD and the bokeh is pleasant.
Sharp at distance even wide open. Some CA on bright whites. My copy has a stiff zoom and the AF is noisy, unreliable at short focusing distances. Various kinds of flare can be seen in bright sun - not always a disater though.
Still, I like it a lot and i think it can be used as a 35mm with the option to zoom out much wider. The downside - bendy distortion comes into play any wider than 35mm.
Bargain FF lens, though.

comment: This lens surprised me. I borrowed it from a friend and took it to the arboretum. I usit on an A100 and a 9000. The bokeh really worked for the perspective. I bought one the next day. I bought it for wide performance and it delivers. The colors are good (even better with some ISO tweaking) and the build quality is great. It was a great deal for the money.

positive:Suprisingly sharp!
Build quality is high
negative:Unless using FF its not that wide.
comment:I have had this lens a while, I was after something to upgrade the kit lens on a KM5D that was also a little wider on a cropped sensor than 28mm.

This lens came as a very pleasant suprise! the sharpness in the pictures is in my opinion, as good as the 50mm 1.7 and highly rated 28-135mm.

The problem is that its not exceptionally wide unless on FF. It fits in an uncomfortable gap between my sigma 10-20mm and 28-135mm. I use the 28-135 for general use, but if I want a wide angle shot I stick the Sigma on. On FF its a genuine wide angle.

Unfortunately not so wide at crop DSLR and quite big.

Upd: Change to Sony 20/2.8.
