comment:The Minolta 50mm f/1.7 is a "classic" everyone should own. I got this lens for less than $100 on Ebay. My copy is sharp, built like a tank and produces gorgeous colors with lots of "pop" on my A580.

Autofocusing is the relatively quick, loud Minolta screw drive. Manual focusing is great and perfectly dampened. Shooting with this lens is a great experience. It screams build quality.

This will certainly be my outdoor walk-around lens, and my girlfriend and I fight over who gets to use this all the time. If you're on the fence about it, just hop over to your favorite used lens dealer and get one, you won't regret it.

comment:Not including my kit lens, this was my first purchase. This thing is so sharp, it's almost as sharp as the 50mm f/2.8 macro. Even on my a580, IF I need an extra bit of low light capability, this lens finds its way on my camera. The only slight disadvantage is its relatively higher minimal focus distance (compared to the 50/2.8 macro.) Other than that, it's very light and small, but that's no way to judge its build. The picture and bokeh are extremely beautiful. Basically, this one sets the standard for other primes to follow. Unless you have the 50mm f/1.4, you have no excuse for not having it. It doesn't cost as much nowadays as much as I paid for it in 2008.

comment:This lens rocks to say the least. 95% of my shots are taken with this lens. So much sharper than any lens i have compared it to (with exception to the 50 1.4) For the price of this lens it should be in every ones bag unless you can afford the high end glass. A true Minolta performer and a must have for anyone looking for an inexpensive prime.

comment:This is another lens carried over from the old Minolta film camera days.
Even though I rarely use it on my Sony A77 these days, it still produces nice sharp low light images when the need calls for it.
Ideal for street shooting and when i want to travel light.
It is also great for portraiture with its effective focal length of 75mm on my Sony A77.

comment:This is my first prime lens.
I purchased this on Ebay because I wanted a portrait lens that I didn't have to break my bank on. So far I am very happy with the lens in this capacity. 50mm... 75 on APS-C, so you don't have to be uncomfortably close to your subject.
I haven't used it out and about, so I will add when I've played with it a little more.

Maybe the hood for it's comedy value
comment:Picked up an excellent copy from eBay - seem to be increasing in price all the time, given the bang per buck performance I am not surprised.

Wonderfully sharp, nice bokeh, Minolta colours and it's sharp. Did I mention the sharpness? Even wide open at f1.7 if you nail the depth of field you can count every eyelash.

I am loving the performance on my A580, works amazingly well with the A580's advanced live view features.

comment:Easily my favorite (and default) lens, although I plan on supplementing my lens collection with the 50/1.4 at some point. Bought it before Sony's 50/1.8 came out, so I probably overpaid a little for it, but I have gotten my $ worth from all the use it has received.

comment:My first minolta lens, it's great in film and digital. Bokeh is ok but not great. I love it in 35mm cameras.
Also my favorite focal length in full frame.

It's pretty sharp wide open "or sharp enough for most subjects" and stop it down to f4 or smaller and it's very sharp on my negatives and a700.

I didn't find it flares often! Though I expected to flare a lot based on previous reviews!

comment:This lens has amazing sharpness and contrast, the pictures come out so 'deep'. Very nice portrait lens on APS-C, bokeh is beautiful. Solidly built but light, not that expensive either. In low light situations the extreme contrast might be a problem, dark parts in the picture become even darker. But on a bright sunny day this one has a very stunning performance!

comment:This was my first Minolta lens, and although I recently sold it, I really enjoyed using it. The colours really pop, and the sharpness at f/2.8 is astounding for a lens that's so cheap!

AF is fast and was very accurate.

I knocked off a point for flare control, but a few shots I took where there was flare looked really nice anyway.

My only negative against it was the straight aperture blades, but sometimes that look works too. I got a Sony 50/1.4 instead and though it has nicer bokeh in my opinion, it's not as much of a bargain!

Autofocus can hunt a bit (on an a350/a550) in dim light at close distances (around 3'-4')
comment:As one of the first things an a-mount user should pick up, this lens is a winner. Its affordable (almost as much as adding $$$ for a kit lens), sharp as heck, light, fast, makes great pictures at night under tungsten/halogen lighting without using the flash.

I don't use this lens much during the daytime when slower apertures and versatile zooming is preferred but when you use it, you can practically stop time at the shutter speeds it can offer.

At the price you buy this lens, it would be considered money extremely well spent.

comment:I have a crossed XX version of this lens, and it's a GEM!
It's completely sharp even at F1.7 and I regularly use it to make head&shoulder portraits wide open in daylight.
It has no veiling haze and the DOF is just sufficient to make the face completely in focus.

The hood is a joke but I've learnt to use my hand properly to avoid heavy flaring.

My best lens so far, and I guess I'll never sell this as long as A-Mount will exist.

comment:Come across three of these ubiquitous lenses so far. Lovely performers. The APS-C crop factor makes it slightly too telephoto for practical everyday use but you just need to bear that in mind when shooting.
