negative:Hood is not so good.
comment:This is a very nice prime lens, fairly sharp wide open but very sharp when stopped down even to f2.8. Not as sharp as the Sigma but as expected better DOF then the macro. Faster then the 35-70mm but not noticably sharper. It really only beats the 35-70 in speed and MFD in non-macro mode.

Very fast and quiet focus on my a200. I have not experienced the flare others have noted.

All things considered it's a great lens to have in your arsenal for indoor existing light and close work. Highly recommended.

positive:well built, sharp detail, nice color, fast, compact, inexpensive
negative:Bokeh is so-so, flare
comment:I own 2 of these inexpensive primes, picked them both from consigment stores. Lens is very sharp, produces pleasing natural colors, very handy at low light indoor situations. Built like a tank.
Bokeh is average, flares a bit at tough lighting conditions.
Still, a keeper.

It would be nice if the price had stayed lower but still good value.
My wife & I use it a lot foe portraits & inside photography.
If you havent got the 1.4 it is worth getting.

positive:Small, cheap, fast and sharp. Somehow the images look really good.
negative:Doesn't always work too well with the onboard flash of my a350
comment:There is just something about the images produced with this lens. It might be subjective, but I really like this lens. It has almost no distortion, which is something that bothered meon the kitlens at both ends of the focal range. It is fast, which is really nice because you get to shoot without flash. I'm just wondering whther I should invest in a 50mm f/1.4, because I really appreciate the speed of this lens.
It is also very nice for close-up portraits at f/1.7. If you focus on the subjects eyes and frame in their face (scalp if necessary) you get very sharp eyes and around the chin and cheeks, towards the ears you can already see the image "dissolve" into the background. This makes images look very dreamy.
I recommend this lens to everybody and I will be keeping mine (unless I get a f/1.4 =))

comment: An excellent little lens that SHOULD BE IN YOUR CAMERA BAG!! if not this one then the M1,4 O,N or the Sony1,4. Its really sharp and responsive in low light! Due to its versatility I use it when i do Weddings more than the 85/1,4 because this glass is fast!! Really cheap and way better than the plastic wanabe that Sony has introduced. This Glass can be use on your film and digital bodies. Its not too wide and not too long, its just right. There's a reason this one was included with most bodies. Of course its not perfect it has its faults yet for the price and built its a winner in my book. The lens hood sucks but you can always buy screw on hoods.

APS-C DSLR transformed it in a fabulous portrait lens and aperture is ideal to take photo inside. A must have !!!

75mm equivalent on APS-C
comment:No notable barrel distortion or CA. It can flare, but generally only in extreme conditions (though not helped any by its gimmicky retracting hood). Colors are "classic Minolta," which people seem to like.

Build is solid. It's metal and plastic, and it feels good. Focus ring is smooth but tiny, making manual focus a bit cumbersome.

It's soft at f1.7, but it's very usable. By f/2.8 it's as sharp as can be, probably out-resolving my A200 sensor.

Incidentally this lens works very well on extension tubes for macro work. I thought about buying a real macro lens, but now I find that I have no need.

This was the first lens I bought when expanding beyond the kit lens on my A200, and it was a good purchase. Highly recommended to all new Alpha owners looking to complement the kit lens!

The 75mm length on the APS-c is just right for me.

My lens is so sharp when the picture is composed properly, and the colours are wonderful.
In some ways beats all my modern lenses I have

As a beginner, this has been an excellent investment. The fixed focal length makes you think about composition and lets me think about things like DOF. If you're a beginner I'd recommend scouring the buy/sell forums or ebay for one if you can!

Very soft at wide open
comment:Cheap and affordable. Sharp after F4 onwards. Although soft at f1.7, but it create blur effect to the picture. Must get it if don't have much budget.

Great colours and general image quality

comment:What a great lens, I was expecting a lot after reading all the previous comments and I wasnt diapointed. Makes for a very nice portrait lens on my A200. Ive so far used it mainly indoors for photos of the kids, I find images to be sharp, colourful and have great bokeh. Best of all I picked up my mint lens for only Ł40!!

comment:I have bought a few of these (which is why my price paid varies). The first one I found was $25 at a pawn shop. It was 2 days after I bought my Sony a200 and read that this was a great lens to get.
Well, I made the purchase and have loved it ever since. I've tried 3 different ones and they all produce the same results. Nice crisp, clean shots. It's great to have a cheap fast lens to get pictures of my little boy in available light.
I've never had any focusing issues. The colors turn out great. I use it mostly at 1.7 or 2.0 and most of the time, the sharpness is good to me. After all, you get a 1.7 lens to use in low light.

Compared to the Sigma 17-70, I couldn't pick a winner. They are 2 completely different lenses. If I need a low light lens, I'd pick the 50. Otherwise I pick the Sigma (because of the zoom ability).

If you can get this lens for around $100, then it's well worth it.

Cheap!

Durable.
!! Easy star effects with small apertures at night scenes (with caveats)!
negative:Glare at night scenes.
Slightly soft below f2.2.
Hood's a joke.
Focus ring is a bit thin.
Bokeh can "swirl"

comment:This lens is absolutely great at what it's supposed to do. The portraits that it produces (when used properly) makes many admire an amateur's photography easily. This is the lens that you want to upgrade to after your kit. I went the wrong way and thought I needed to cover the telephoto range before even knowing about this lens.

What you don't know might not hurt you, but it will cost you.

It's fixed zoom forces one to tinker with their creativeness in the field. The wide aperture makes low light shooting much more bearable without flash (perfect with a bounce flash!). The aperture flexibility creates great Depth of Field options for the shooter.

However, the caveats in this lens include:
Night scene point glare(s). Shooting street lamps from a distance created lights in the sky from the bounce glare.
The Bokeh/soft backgrounds can be "swirly" as a reviewer on his own site described. This mostly happens with a normally lit subject with many bright background lights.

Imagine shooting a subject at sunset, with the warm sunlight on the subject and bright sunlight on rose bushes behind or light through a tree as a background. The bokeh can give you vertigo at times.

Other than that, this lens has so much value, you would be a fool not to pick one up for a reasonable price. This lens' positives as explained by everyone else in this forum by far outweigh the cons. Pick a good one up for under $100 USD and you won't be disappointed.
