positive: | - Sharp from f2 in center image - compact and lightweight - Minolta colors - Beautiful bokeh - cap difficult to remove |
negative: | - Hard to find |
comment: | I own this lens for about 1 year. I wanted to sell the lens because it never was sharp on my A700 and A200. But sind two weeks i own a A900, and with it's Micro focusing adjustment this lens comes back to life. I think the lens performs about the same as the Minolta 35mm F2 (my copy). I love the colors of this lens, better than the Zeiss. But the Zeiss is slightly sharper. Every time I think again: how can such a small lens doing it so well on a full frame camera compared to the big zeiss lens! I absolutely love this lens. If you can find one -> get it. |

positive: | -Sharp at widest! -Colors -Small size -Resist flare better by old version (slightly) -Better build finish than old version |
negative: | None! |
comment: | Finally got a RS version for a reasonable price, I prefer the matte finish over the old glossy one. RS version also have circular aperture and new coating. Get one while you can! From my experience the 28 F2 is the most common of the F2s I seen on the market. |

positive: | Optics very good, small |
negative: | Some corner problems wide open |
comment: | A very good walk-around wide angle. Corners between F/2-F/4 soft but still gives good results in appropriate situations (e.g. inside). Very good when stopped down to F/5.6, perfect at F/8. |

positive: | razor sharp wonderful IQ compact, light weight |
negative: | none |
comment: | it is a wonderful walk around lens, especially for aps-c format. As other reviewer mentioned, this lens is extremely sharp, even at f/2. The color is true and pleasing. And it is amazing that how compact this lens is. Although it is not a full metal lens, you can still feel that it would last fowever. The distortion is not visible on aps-c (not sure about the full-frame but I am eager to try it out). It blows the f/2.8 version thousands of miles away. The bad part is that this lens, especially the RS version, is extremely difficult to find. The price on ebay is getting higher and higher (the positive side is that it holds value well). It is a must have for minolta AF lens collector. I was lucky that I got a mint like new copy of it. |

positive: | Sharpness Clarity Bokeh (!) |
negative: | Flares |
comment: | Probably a bit sharper than 35mm f2 (a razor one) but "mine" has not a bokeh as bad as described in some reviews... Not the same silky one of 35mm f1.4 G but better than 35mm f2 and 50mm f1.7 too. The contrast is perfect for landscape and BW shots. Distortion is well controlled. A bit of spherical aberration @f2 noticed with A700, on CCD SLRs this is less pronounced. On film probably the best 28mm ever made with Carl Zeiss Distagon 28mm f2 |

positive: | - Unqestionably sharp at all apertures. - Great colour rendition - Light & compact - Feels well constructed - Great for lowlight |
negative: | - Flares sometimes on my A100 - Bokeh isn't as good as some of my other lenses |
comment: | I have fell in and out of love with this lens, but I have come to realise that it is simply awesome. Extremely sharp at all apertures. Colour rendition is excellent, clean - what you expect from a good prime. The combination of this lens being so small and being razor sharp makes it quite unique and very attractive IMHO. If you find one, don't turn it down. The 42mm FOV equiv. is just wonderful, it will compliment any 50/58/70/85/100mm lens - its just that bit wide enough that you dont feel you need anything wider, and just that close enough to standard that you rarely have to change lenses! Excellent. The bokeh can be funny, but nearly every lens can have funny bokeh if you use it in less than ideal lighting. Specula highlights is where the bokeh catches a bit. But in moderately soft lighting, the bokeh is excellent & is helped partly by the circular aperture on this version. |

positive: | Very sharp Ideal 7D "standard" lens Color rendered Compact size f/2 |
negative: | Hood too small for APS-C |
comment: | This lens is Minolta at its best: Quality without braking the bank too much. On digital, with 1.5 cropping, it's ideal: 42mm. Bokeh is Ok with lower contrast images. It's really sharp. Had some trouble with filters (maybe due to the flat front element which is close to filter). Hoya HMC worked, HMC Super didn't. Better without though, the lens and color is that sharp. Auto focus is very smooth. Manual focus is also Ok. The supplied sun shield is not useful on APS-C. In critical situations I use the shield of a 100-300 APO RS. The case that comes with this lens is really over the top. It's from another age, or two. On the other hand, it magnifies the quality and Zen that has been put in this lens. Sony, please take note⦠|

comment: | It's a very nice lens, a real collector item. On A100 it becomes a 42/2, a perfect walk around lens. From f/2 to f/4 sharpness is excellent at the centre, slightly softer but still very good towards the corners. From f/4 and above it's simply perfect. |

comment: | It's very much sharper than my 28/2.8 and other zoom lenses. Optical and build performance are worth 5 points rating. It's my walk around lens. |

positive: | An ideal "standard" lens for 7D; Great performance in compact package. |
negative: | Price new; No "D" chip |
comment: | Bought on e-bay in pristine condition for very competitive price Spent the last week with it as only lens on my 7D and am absolutely delighted to have access to high quality f2 performance with a more versatile angle of view (42mm equivalent) than the reframed 50mm (75mm equivalent). This in a compact and light package. Ideal indoors for casual people shots (perfect for available light snaps of friends across the table for example, allows flexible framing even in smallish rooms), and behaves as a "universal" lens outdoors. On 7d, it allows close range portraits without exagerated perspective oddities. Focuses down to 30cm. Must be nice to use on film bodies as well... Results are absolutely perfect in terms of definition and contrast, even wide open. No AF issues at all with 7D. A great piece of equipment for those days you want to travel light, without a cumbersome zoom. |
