comment:This lens reminds me why I avoided zoom lenses for so many years. I bought it s/h for my A390 in 2012, attracted by its range and price, but almost all the pictures I took with it were disappointing.
If you keep the sun over your shoulder, avoid sky in the frame, stick to f9-f11, avoid the long end and don't attempt to crop the pictures much, the results are acceptable. Otherwise, softness, veiling and CA are too bad to be acceptable, and the colours also look flat and dull (I can't help wondering whether the huge front glass element is partly to blame here). This is the only lens I've used where the CA is noticeable without cropping, and given the high reputation Tamron used to have in the 1970s and 1980s, I can't help being very disappointed. Maybe it was okay for a cheap walk-around lens in film days (especially for people who only took colour prints), but for today's digital cameras I think it is just not good enough. Frankly, you'd get better results at 100-200mm focal length by using the 18-55mm kit lens and the digital zoom. Interestingly the old Minolta 28-100mm lens (also a cheap zoom for film cameras) is much better and IMHO quite usable. The Sony 55-200mm is better throughout the range than this Tamron, though still disappointing at 200mm.

needs to stepped down
fast focusing
filter doesnt rotate

i like the looks and the huge filter size (72mm) :D

positive:Relatively light, spans the normal range.
Sharpness is adequate when stopped down.
Quite inexpensive.
negative:I have no negatives on this lens yet.
comment:I like it as a walk around lens to take to the beach etc. It actually focuses better and faster some of the other lenses I have. I am sorry everybody is so down on the lens, as a non professional snap shooter of family fun, I kind of like it.
Picked this one up on Ebay, cheap, probably one of the other reviewers was getting rid of theirs. It does need to be stopped down, but all lenses in my price range need to be stopped down for best focus. I use it on my A100 with shutter priority of 1/400 or so and ISO 800. For 42 usd this lens should be in the cheap lens hall of fame.

positive:wide range, one of the first superzooms with decent image quality; fairly good image quality on film
negative:seems to be less suitable for digital; for whatever reason, pictures seems to be less sharp and also AF seems to be less
comment:I liked this lens a lot on my Dynax 9xi and I made some nice pictures with it. On the Konica Minolta 7D however, I tend to ignore it. Autofocus operations are definitely less than on my 9xi. Picture quality also seems to be much more sensitive to choice of aperture (when not stopped down, it seems to be much harder to get a usable picture compared to with a film camera). By the way colour and build are actually quite good.

positive:- Relative broad zom range
- cheap, especially 2nd hand on ebay
- Front element doesn't rotate
- Low weight
negative:- Image quality could be better
- No zoom lock
- Manual focus ring moves when zooming.
comment:I've bought this lens when I first bought my Minolta 800si, it's been with me most of the time. For real qulity photo's I switch to different lenses though.

The 3.8 maximum aperature is nice to have, but cannot be selected in A or M mode. The camera will auto select it when needed in any other mode though.
