positive:Smooth zoom and focus controls
Internal focus
Parfocal
Compact
Little distortion
Minimal CA (purple/green at 24 mm, blue/red at 85 mm)
negative:Haze that decreases contrast
Barrel distortion on the wide end
Focus inaccuracy/purple fringing
Focus plane more curved than 28-xx and 35-xx zooms
Focal length decreases with close focus
comment:The 24-85 RS performs identically to the non-RS version. The apertures aren't even significantly different shapes. The RS version might be slightly smoother.

The 24-85 seems to back focus often on the A58 so the corners end up sharper than the center. Both version often look washed out especially wide open perhaps caused by sensor reflection which wasn't an issue in 1994. Both are very soft at 85 mm.

The focal plane of the 24-85 is not as flat as the focal plane of the 28-105, but it is flatter than the Sony DT 18-55 kit lens at least on the wide end. The 24-85 has a bit less distortion than the 28-105 on the wide end. It has very similar amount of distortion to the 18-55. It is sharper at the wide end than the 18-55, but it performs quite similarly to the kit lens at the longer focal lengths. It is a bit sharper at 24 mm than the Sigma 24 mm Super Wide II F2.8 prime lens.

Overall, neither version of the 24-85 is a great alternative to the 18-55 SAM II kit lens on an APS-C camera, and the longer 28-105 and 35-105 zooms perform much better.

positive:Minolta colors. Useful focal range on full frame. Solid build. Nice size and weight.
negative:Bad distortion. Not sharp, soft corners even stopped down.
comment:I was hoping to find an affordable "kit" lens to use with the A99 while saving up for something better. I already owned the 35-105 which is very good, but isn't quite wide enough and has a horrible minimum focusing distance. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed in this lens. The focal range is very useful, going from wide enough for landscapes, to long enough for decent portraits. But the distortion is very noticeable at all focal lengths. And the lens simply is not super sharp when compared to the 35-105. Corners are weak through out. Center needs stopping down.

That said, it's still a useful lens for the price. Without spending 5-10 times as much for a used Sigma model, I doubt there is a zoom lens that would allow me to shoot in the 24-28mm range. Thus I'm debating whether to keep the lens or sell it off.

positive:Well this is an amazing lens, I must say. Very well build, very solid feel, fast focus, very, very sharp I must say. This lens is so sharp as the Carl Zeiss. I have bought. It's a bargain when related with it's quality.
This lens have a nice focal range. It's a walk around lens. And does the job very, very well.
Colours! Everytime I ear about Minolta lenses, the colours are always a strong point. Guess what, that's true! There is some smooth and creamy effect in the shots. That's hard to explain, but the shots came with a very pleasing colours.

Definitely a "must have" lens. You won't regret that's a sure!
negative:It is not a negative point but something to consider:
Aperture 3.5 to 4.5;
The bokkeh it's a little bit hard. It's a question to try. In some occasions feels nice and distinguish but in general shooting the bokkeh is not so smooth as the Carl Zeiss 16-80mm.
If you like landscapes, 24mm may not be wider enough but I shoot landscapes with it very often. But sometimes it misses the all scene.
comment:I bought my lens from a eBay Japanese shop. The lens came just like new. Amazing condition. I'm very happy with it. I just can say for the price you pay, you get a stunning lens. It will last long. It will take great shots, and will travel a lot because it is a very versatile lens.
If you find a good copy of this lens, get it right away!

positive:- amazing sharpness when stopped down, sharper than Zeiss 16-35, both at 24/35mm f8
- perfect small size and light
- price
negative:- soft wide open (especially in corners, but generally across the frame
- flare (night photography)
comment:This is an awesome lens, even if it would cost more. The performance to price ratio is just amazing if you dont need anything below f5.6. it is sharper than other lenses tested at f8 and the respective focal length. The sizes makes it a perfect walk around lens to carry on your FF frame DSLR/SLT all day long.

Only to issues I have with it are that it cant really be used wide open and the way it handles flare in night photography. Other than that this lens is perfect on my A99.

It's just as sharp as the 2 35-70's but more versitile.

Wide open, no where near the sharpness of 55-200 and 35f1.8. It is sharp at f8 but still not as sharp as 55-200 or 35f1.8 or 50F1.7. Color is not as good as 50F.17 (at least for portraits).

comment:Very good lens, above f5.6 as good as the other lenses (except 24-105- see comment below) at similar focal lengths. Let down slightly by its performance at max. aperture at the wide end but I have rated a 5 for sharpness because it is still very usable and 4.75 not an option.

Better than the Minolta 24-105 at all apertures and focal lengths.

comment:Love this lens. Bought it off a friend who wanted something with more reach and i love it. Although the build quality is less than what im used to with first and second generation Minolta AF lenses, i still like using it most of the time both on APS-C and on Film.
Since i Mostly shoot B\W Film, i prefer it as a walk around lens for my Maxxum 9. The 24 end is great for film but not wide enough on APSC. Although i would still pick my 24 2.8 over it if i need a wide lens, i still highly recommend it if you need to take your camera and only one lens.

negative:Extreme purple fringing wide open.
comment:This lens is very solid and well made, quite sharp if stopped down a bit and it has those wonderful Minolta colors.

The Tamron beats it for speed and sharpness (but of course the Tamron is an APS-C only lens)and the Minolta's beat it for sharpness.

This is a great range on film and really not bad on APS-C (36mm-127.5mm equiv.).

The only real concern with this lens is very distinct purple fringing at wide apertures in high contrast situations. I intend for this to be my walk around lens on my film body.

comment:This is a good walk-around lens. For general photography like landscapes, it is really nice to carry (compact, light), and is well paired with the 70-300G in terms of length and filter size. It has really nice colour, and the contrast is also quite good. On the a850/900, it has softer corners in its wider focal length range. On apsc it would be quite sharp around the frame. Stop down a bit and it becomes sharper across the frame. CA is evident at 24mm or so wide open.

I recently looked through my catalogue of images and found more shots with this lens than I realized, mainly landscapes. I was really pleased with the output. I put the build rating at 5, which is relative to its price. It is well made with nice rubber grips in this RS version. The 24mm at the wide end, on full frame, is really nice to have and a big difference with 28mm. But the output from, say, the Tamron 28-75 is better in terms of sharpness. But the Minolta's colour is better.

Sony needs a 24-105mm or 24-85mm G lens with SSM as soon as possible, with image quality and build comparable to the 70-300G. Apart from the super-huge and expensive CZ24-70, there is a glaring gap in this focal length range for Sony.

comment:Ive only been using this lens on my A200 for a couple of days but compared to the kit lens this is in another league entirely.

Ive been considering an upgrade from my kit lens for a while now and, being on a tight budget knew Id be looking for second hand Minolta glass. I picked my "as new" lens up off ebay for a reasonable Ł100. Ive seen them sell without hoods for about Ł80ish and good examples sell for up to Ł130ish

The image quality, especially its sharpness, is good. Its a touch soft wide open but stop it down a little and it becomes very sharp, at f8-11 its very impressive and makes you realize how bad the kit lens actually is! My 50mm 1.7 is no better...

The build, which is a mix of metal and plasic is good and has a nice weight to it without feeling too heavy on your shoulder. The proper distance window is handy as well.

Im fairly new to DSLRs so my opinion and comments might not have as much weight as a more experienced reviewer, but if you are looking for a good value replacement for the standard kit lens then this is certainly worth considering, And please dont let the slight loss of the wide angle put you off, its still very useful on an APS-C.

Built really well
Very Sharp stopped up
negative:f3.5 at 24mm Only
comment:I like this lens , It's not leaving my A300 unless I need Longer range or macro features. It's the perfect walkaround lens , not as bulky and heavy as my Sigma 24-70 f2.8 on my A700. Would recommend it if you can find a good copy.

Corners are surprisingly sharp at 24mm on the A900.

comment:Absolutely fantastic lens at a great price. I'm one of the people who finds the kit lens ok but this is so much better.

I struck lucky and found it listed badly on ebay and got it at a fantastic price but would pay 3 times the amount for it if ever anything happens to this one.

The IQ is just amazing and it is light and compact. The hood isn't too special but I have better lenses to deal with any flare problems so it doesn't make any difference to me.

I have no problems with build quality of mine. Everything is solid as a rock.

If you see one buy it.

compared to:- SAL 1870 (kit)
price paid:
missing
positive:- Compact size
- Longer reach
- Good looks
- Bright
- Sharp
- Flower petal hood (though not much use on APC-S)
- Build
negative:- Little heavy (about Tamron 17-50/2.8)
- Slightly loose when extended (as much as the kit)..maybe due to its age.
- Flare (it's a film-era lens)
- Not wide
comment:Compared to the kit,
- Bit heavier, but similar length
- Better build with metal mount
- Brighter & more bokeh

In general,
- Very good range for general outdoor and home studio photography (36-128mm eqv.)
- Not much zoom creep despite its age & weight
- Step down a notch, it gets quite sharp

Had it for a couple of weeks and loving it.

Update: Had it for a few months now and still like it very much for mainly for its range and compactness. It's bit soft wide open. Not a negative point, but colour is bit yellow as well compared to Tamron 17-50.

negative:Sharpness especially at wide end not so good, CA quite pronounced
comment:Bought this with little money some years ago to replace my mechanically damaged 28-85/3,5-4,5. For the price it performs well. However when looking picutures more closely you see lack of sharpness especially at wide end and also chromatic aberration. When stopped down you still get bang for the euros. Distortion is not a problem in APS-C.

positive:Sharp wide open, very sharp stopped down a bit. great color, weight and balance, petal hood, excellent auto focus on A700

negative:none so far
comment:I bought this lens a couple of months ago to replace my Minolta 24-50 f4 and my Minolta 35-70 f4. Both are fine lenses but, due to their limited range, I found my self constantly changing lenses to respond to unexpected photo opportunities.
The 24-85 is all I hoped it would be and more. In addition to exceeding the combined range of the other two, its IQ easily equals or bests both of them, and the color is as close to nature as I have seen. Coupled with my "75-300 f4.5-5.6 New" it makes a near perfect outdoor combo for nature and landscape photography at under $300. I could not be more pleased.

Great range on FF
negative:24 mm too long on APS-C
Bokeh not so good
No ADI (i can live without)
comment:Bought this lens a few weeks after my 5D to see what there was to gain. It was a NOS lens, felt very lucky to get it for this price. After reading the reviews here, choices were this one or the 24-105 which has better range, ADI, but more distortion and is more expensive. Build is very nice, i liked the looks too.
IQ is better than both kitlenses, sharper, more usefull as bigger apertures. Colours quite similar to Minolta 70-210 f/3.5-4.5 which is a nice partner for this lens. Haven't noticed distortions, but bokeh can be awful sometimes. Guess Minolta had to trade off sharpness versus bokeh because of the price point. As with all the film era lenses works better on FF (rangewise).

Update 1 : i use this lens on the A900 in cases i want to travel light, need the 1:6 "macro" capabilities or don't want to take the 28-70 f/2.8 G. Walkarounds on the streets or product shots for example. Very usable lens, nice range from WA just up to portrait.

Update 2 : i don't recommend this lens to APS-C users as Sony has some very good alternatives (Sony 16-50 SSM, Carl Zeiss 16-80,Sony 16-105, Sony 18-55) with better range, especially on the wide side.

positive:+As sharp as they get when you stop it down
+Good contrast
+Punchy colour
+Great build quality/feel
+Quick focus
+Great range
negative:-Colours can be too rich at times
-Flare control, especially when shooting into the sun, can be very hard to manage
-Distortion on Film/FF is very noticeable with some subjects, though I never noticed it at all on APS-C
-Bokeh CAN be odd, but generally still good. In the right lighting, this can produce very smooth, creamy bokeh. In the wrong lighting, the bokeh is either very harsh or even donutty (like a mirror lens).
comment:Used as my everywhere lens for a long time. Very fond of it. Eventually traded it off for a 17-50/2.8, which I'm not 100% impressed with.

I think this lens is amazing value for money. The photos it takes are just so rich with detail and colour. As I say, the only thing that was occationally a problem was flare or glare. The tamron with its digital coating is better in that regard.

I highly recommend this lens to anyone looking for something really sharp as an everywhere lens and can work with the 36mm min. equiv. FOV. IMO 36 is just wide enough to make it very usable. I never really had any issues with lack of width, just for inside shots it started to become an issue.

A top class lens.
