Thanks Harm, Domien.
It was the very long exposures that put me of the filter on a standard camera approach - essentially you are exposing through a blocking filter on the sensor - pretty daft. No such problem here in bright light - EXIF - ISO 200, f7.2 1/4000s (full EXIF is in the file). I have been deliberately overexposing about a stop today, yesterday they all seemed a little dark. Though it worked pretty well in the one I chose for Day 20. The real problem is that they are all far too red - LR white balance hasn't got the range to correct it. I am currently trying to get Lightroom to find a RAW converter profile I have created to resolve this (following instructions found online). I will try again tomorrow. |

Yesterday i had +/- an off-day. 50% unsharp shots (while i have about 5a10% in normal conditions using the A77ii that means i wasn't up to my normal standards).
To make things worse - the SD-card had 100KByte of Bad sectors suddenly (this is only the 2nd time in > 10 years i had errors on a Sandisk flash-device). I managed to save all the good images (not so difficult with that high error-tremor-rate of mine)... ![]() I could of course try another more simple method - getting stung by an Asian Hornet - but it's too cold at this moment. Bizar is to know that Ants like 33%beer + 33% white wine + 33% sugar - but they do not survive this (yes i took a patent and copyright on this new animal-friendly way of killing the Ant - to be honnest i'm a fan of the aardvark - in the cartoons - this time the Aardvark wins!). Today i'm recharging my batteries in preparation for the fortress-walhalla in Aubin-Neufchateau for next Saturday (our 2nd visit). |

Big regrets but we are just emerging from a domestically chaotic week where everything seemed to coincide, all taking up far more time than available. In addition in my haste to get my new M3 MacBook up and running I managed to copy the hard drive's empty documents folder onto my backup disc, instead of the other way round!!. Finally we are nursing a poorly Rosie who seems to have done what golden retrievers do best and eat something disgusting that is now fighting its way out again!!
IOW, I am so behind with little to no chance of catching up and have decided to reluctantly withdraw from this challenge for this year |

@Phil Wood, nice to see another IR shooter, there's several others here on Dyxum, so maybe starting a dedicated thread you can get some advice on how to best process the raw files.
@minolta_mutley, don't worry about the failed shots, the two I saw from that day (bagpipers and the upper fllor of fort 8) all came out very well. That's all that counts. @bonneville, good luck sorting through all your troubles Brian, and if you want no need to catch-up, just jump back in when you can (and feel like it). @Harm vb, indeed, I was there last saturday with three Leica friends. One of them was like me using a Sony "digital back" for his old rangefinder lenses (a 7C). The other two were Leica all-in (M9M, M10, M11) and my status was mixed (M246M + A7ii). Couldn't resist at least one day with a non-A/E mount camera ![]() |

Next two days I'll be in my car, towing our 2CV to France. Stop-over in Rouen, so I'll try to do some shooting there.

I have had so many problems choosing the right photo for today... Possibly not many good ones to choose from, but still, I had 5 candidates. Normally it takes me few seconds and it's done. Today, not :)
Finally I picked a photo of some ants that is best viewed on big 4K TV screen. Otherwise it looses a lot of appeal. But well, it's not a contest where you can win your life ;) I hope at least some of you will find it ok. I had some river landscapes as alternatives. |

Me too. I only took a few shots while waiting for my car to be valeted in an unpreposessing part of town. Nothing much to show - I almost went out for a night shot or two - but I have an early start tomorrow, so what you see is what you get. |

I'm back after the certificate issues combined with some computer issues of my own. However, the 2x crop factor was really fun to play with, especially for that moon shot. In that shot, I had to use manual, as any shot I took other than that one was considerably over exposed. Not sure if that is the poor low light metering of the camera, or that the camera is 30 years old, and the shutter is a little slow in low light.
Anything I took this month with the Sigma 1000mm f8 used some pretty serious gear to take. Besides the camera, my heavy lens kit is a Jobu Designs Black Widow gimbal, long arca swiss plate, on a Manfrotto MT057C4-G tripod. With a lens that weighs 11.5 lbs (5.2 kg) plus camera (and grip if ussed), much is needed to get a good sharp image. The day 30 photo was my only one posted this month that was not the RD-175, which I think shows that the lens has generally not been the limitation from a sharpness standpoint. With appropriate gear, lighting, and technique, I find that the lens is quite sharp. In previous comparisons, my 600mm f4 w/ a 1.4x teleconverter is better. In the unlikely case you find a 1000mm f8 in Maxxum mount, I suggest you put the funds towards the 600mm f4 instead. As an aside, a Sigma 800mm f5.6 just sold on ebay for $1400+ USD, and I couldn't put up enough to get that to complete my crazy long lens collection. Overall, I find that the RD-175 is a phenomenal camera for it's day. However, the technology has advanced so far in the last 30 years, that my a99ii could take the same photos, be cropped by 10x and still have roughly the same resolution. I will be happy to go back to my more modern bodies. That being said, it always feels good to pull out the RD-175 once a year and pay homage to our digital fore-fathers. At the very least, I hope all of you have enjoyed what little I have been able to post this month. May you all have the opportunity to try a camera like this to truly appreciate how far we have advanced. I wish I had more time to take and post more photos. The miss rate for this camera was quite high. Edited by ffrolvaag - 01 May 2024 at 02:05 |
