I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on whether the thick background branch on the cockatoo photo helps or hinders the photo?

@Terry, helps! I think we photographers tend to get a little to OCD about backgrounds. I find as I print more pictures, having a bit more context in the image is helpful. I've been trying to make a point of including elements of the background into the composition. In this case, your tree branch is leading the eye into the head of the cockatoo. It works.
