C is for the 518th (!) Carnival in Stavelot

Announcement

Sony A7r4 | Sony 20/1.8G | f/8 | 1/125s | 100iso

Decoration

Sony A7r4 | Sony 85/1.8 | f/10 | 1/200s | 200iso

The origins of the special carnival in Stavelot go back to 1502, when the then Prince Abbot for some unknown reason forbade his monks to participate in the then popular carnival parties... Out of solidarity, the population then decided to join to all dressed up as monks (brown habits, long hoods, etc.)... A dozen commandments and prohibitions later (from, among others, the same prince-abbot) only the - now also well-known and characteristic - white habits and a grotesque mask with a long orange nose remain.
