At times, it is not wide enough (or alternatively it's too short focal length)?

You could say that for every lense. Even 18mm can be to short or to long.
I can go down to 12mm (12-24G) or 14mm with a prime.

You can always find an argument to buy an extra lense .

Not wide enough, not normal enough - if you want wide, a 20mm is proper wide. If you want a general purpose widish normal lens, that is 28mm. To me, 24mm is in between two very useful focal lengths 20mm and 24mm. 28mm is my favourite focal length I think. Unfortunately there is little love for 28mm

In the end, it is personal. Like I said, I really like 28mm. If I want wider, 24mm is not wide enough.

That was kind of the point, yes.
It must be working as I've bought no new lenses for a while.

This. 24mm never seems to be the correct focal length.

I tend to this view also. It's why since my complete move to the E-mount, I have not added a 24mm (or 25mm) to the lineup. If I want to go wide, I have a 21mm (or even a 15mm. A 28mm would be of more practical use, covering the 'gap' between 20mm and 35mm in a way that the 24mm doesn't.

But clearly the popularity of the 24mm lens shows that many do prefer this length, so personal preference does play a big part with the choice.

But then, why does Sony have both a 12-24mm zoom and a 24-70 zoom? Tamron works with 28 (17-28 and 28-75), Sigma has even 3 primes at 24mm.

Don't get the point other than personal preferences

I would prefer a 28-85/2.8 over the common 24-70/2.8 - the 15mm on the long end is more useful then the 4mm on the wide end in my experience. I don't know why nobody makes one of those.

I got the Sigma 28-70/2.8 over the 24-70/2.8. Sigma also has a 16-28.
I would have bought the Sigma 14-24 if it was a 14-28.

Preference for any focal length is personal, I prefer 28mm.

I, on the other hand, find 28mm to be not wide enough. 24 is often where I find myself on a zoom range. I once had 28-80 or so lent from someone and I was desperately missing those 4mm. That is also why I still don't have anything wider in E mount after 12-24 fiasco. Not important enough. But I will get there and will report it here ;)

And the Sony 18-105mm f4 has been sold.
Line-up has decreased by 1 lens.

Yeah, I got the FX30/18-105 combo when all I had for video work was the a7Riii (slower autofocus, 29 min recording limit) and a9 (no S-log etc). Now I shoot with an a1. No recording limit, fast autofocus, 8k video ability, very little rolling shutter etc. The FX30 doesn't offer enough points of difference to keep. Which is kind of a shame, because it really is a great video camera.

The 18-105 was the first of the two items to be sold.
