Addy, you probably used all the right setting with your camera!
That, or I cannot differentiate between a sharp or unsharp picture

Settings:
Camera firmware: 1.20
Lens firmware: 01

So my A7rIIIa shows firmware version 1.0 and oddly, Sony doesn't even list my camera when I search for it, only the A7rIII which has an update to 3.10. Doing a search it seems that for my camera FW version 1.0 is the latest. Odd that Sony has no info for this camera which is still current and replaced the original A7rIII. Lens FW is 1.0. I do think the problem is my settings.
I have memory recall No. 3 setup for landscape using Single AF and using that setting I had no focus issue, even at f11.

Thank you Michael!

I appreciate your input with all the links! Interesting that when I searched Sony USA support the ILCE-7RM3a didn't come up. It is definitely there in your link. It shows no FW download available.

Looking at compatible lenses, the FE 20mm f1.8 is listed with the remark:
"[Aperture Drive in AF] (still image) in the menu can be used in camera system software of Ver. 2.00 or later". Hmmmm. Have to look at those settings related to aperture drive and focus priority. Of course my camera is not Ver. 2.00 or later.

FYI: Here is Dustin Abbott's review of the 20mm f1.8G: Dustin Abbott FE 20mm f1.8 G lens review. He noticed the same focus pulsing.

I read his review on his site. He used the A7r3 like you, could be the AF system of the A7r3(A). He doesn't mention settings other then "AF-C".

An update on my Viltrox 16mm f1.8, the lens had a weird issue:
when I set the aperture ring to f16 the camera was reading it as f18.
I needed to ever so slightly move off f16 to make it pick up f16 again.
Looked like the aperture ring was a little off for some reason. But the odd thing is it was only off at this particular setting. It worked fine at all other aperture settings.

I didn't find this issue till very recently since I almost never shoot past f11.

I also tried it with "clickless" aperture, so it does hit f16 ever so slightly before the f16 marking and ever so slightly after f16 marking it moves very quickly to f18. For other f-stop points you needed to move the ring over half way between the two f-stop points before it picked up the next fstop setting.
Very odd that it's like this only around f16.

So I sent it to the shop to be fixed under warranty (bought used from LCE). The shop contacted Viltrox and both accepted it was faulty. But the shop could not find a repair centre in the UK. So they simply offered a full refund.
I was in two minds about it since it wasn't a massive issue that affected my shooting but at the same time if the lens developed any further faults I'd have no chance getting it fixed in the UK if a massive chain (LCE) couldn't find a repair centre that'd work on it.

So initially was just going to replace it with another copy but the latter point about not being able to get it fixed locally is playing on my mind.
I am thinking of going back to 14GM again despite the huge increase in costs.

How about testing Sigma 14 mm F1.4 or 15 mm F1.4 Fisheye next? Although those are quite big and heavy and actually even more expensive than Sony FE 1.8/14 GM...

If I do it'll be when I can grab one at a bargain price just to try it for fun (especially the fisheye)
I'd never carry such a lens with me so its not so useful.

they are niche lenses I think and I do love trying niche lenses but only when I am not making a loss

Well, it has a decent rep, but I guess the question is why do you want it for?

Want vs. Need, that is the question! And GAS creates confusion as to what we really need. And a good deal on a lens can also do the same. A 135mm prime is really quite a specialty lens for when you know exactly what your subject and setting will be. I really like that focal length for some of my railroad photos. It has just the right amount of tele reach and compression. Some of my favorite photos were captured with the Zeiss Batis 135 or with my Tamron 28-200mm zoom set to 135mm. I guess the next question would be do you really need a fast f1.4 lens at 135mm? I really don't know anything about Samyang lenses. I understand they are a good value.

I have picked up both Viltrox 16mm f1.8 and a 14GM, not sure how that happened...
Will do a comparison, and eventually sell the one I don't want/use I guess.
