On Thursday night I was down at Takapuna, and the coincidence of clear skies, and a large moon, took this seascape image.
Moon over Rangitoto Island Sony α1 and 100-400mm GM, 3-stop ND filter, 4 sec exposure at ISO100. I photographed the moon separately and then used that in place of the horribly, over-exposed moon in the original photo. |

ObLandscape: Sun dog at Vanhankaupunginlahti, Helsinki α7R V + Sony Carl Zeiss FE 4/16-35 ZA OSS @ 35 mm, f/11, 1/250 s, ISO 125 Yes, definately more of a snapshot than properly composed landscape picture despite the reasonably interesting conditions. Somehow I tended to be more interested in bird photography during that photo session, which may not be that surprising as I was sitting in a bird hide. |

It was a somewhat unreal looking scene that night🤷♂️. I actually desaturated the yellow in the moon from its actual hue, because it just looked too unreal. Even though it was a stronger yellow that night. Thanks for the comment about the red-and-white buoy in the channel. I have been wondering about cloning it out of the photo. I’m not sure, but I think turning the ‘ color’ of the moon to white would help reducing the unnatural effect. |

@Dopol
Thanks for that thought. The problem with making the moon white, is that it was a very distinct yellow that night. And the whiter I make it, the more its colour doesn't match the reflection in the water. To my eye, the main problem is that the white balance is doesn't work. The white balance for the sky, gives the sea in the foreground the wrong hue. So with this image, I applied two different white balances, restored the yellow in the moon (to better match its reflection), and got rid of the buoy at the far left of the image. It looks like you also lowered exposure in your second version, but the disturbing lights have disappeared. As for the moon, i actually agree with you both. In the first it looks a tad unnatural, but that makes the shot. In the second attempt it looks less special, but that may be partly due to the lowered exposure. It is a good shot anyway, so well done in both cases.
