Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
Currently, we can identify some of the lenses for A- and E-mount based on their signatures in EXIF, the table of known lenses is available at http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/TagNames/Sony.html#LensType and at http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/TagNames/Sony.html#LensType2 If you happen to have a lens that is not in the lists, can you please upload or e-mail a raw file, or - if you can't - even a JPEG out-of-camera shot with such a lens. Subject does not matter, even a black frame is absolutely OK. That would help third-party developers to offer better information and possibly better processing of your shots. Sometimes we want to know what lens was used to shoot a particular scene. Lenses are recognized by lens ID in EXIF/Makernotes (please see the tables I referenced) and a combination of factors (recorded also as tags in EXIF/Makernotes), such as: minimal focal length, maximal focal length, maximal aperture at minimal focal length, maximal aperture at maximal focal length, lens mount, lens format, taking focal length, maximal aperture at taking focal length, taking aperture, and so on. Some lenses are missing in the tables, and to improve recognition sample files (preferably, ARWs) are needed.

Obviously, for exiftool, as you can see I posted links to Phil's most excellent work. exiftool is widely used by many other pieces of software that deals with JPEGs and raw files - please see 'Related' section here, where some (I would say 10%) are listed: http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/index.html#links
exiv2 is another one, also using same tables. |

First thing first; i made this thread a sticky one. Hopefully, it will help a bit.
This (collecting lens ID) is something we did on few occasions since the KM 7D was introduced and back in the days we worked together here with Phil Harvey to get most of makernote lens IDs. Of course, a lot of new lenses (and new mount) have been introduced so there is still some work to do. I would urge anyone with lenses without "known" maker note ID to share their images so that the ID can be pulled out. I made a quick utility page from our lens database (hopefully not too quick to have bugs :( ) that may be used to find lenses that we miss IDs for (our lens database is hopefully up-to-date enough to be used as a quick reference. lens makernote ID list There is a column "makernote ID"; if it is empty, and you have that particular lens, then please let us know. Iliah, if our community can be of further assistance just ask. |

I can add the Lens ID of 2 old (around 1995) Sigma lenses I used:
Sigma 28-105mm F4-5.6 UC - Lens ID 25531 (this is the original UC version, which is not yet in the Dyxum database, but is already in the Exiftool list) Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO Macro - Lens ID 25611 (this is already in Exiftool, and in the Dyxum database with name "Sigma 70-300 APO macro") In addition, I think several of the Lens ID numbers missing in the Dyxum database are already known in the Exiftool list - e.g. the ID numbers of some newer Tamron lenses, already in Exiftool but not yet in Dyxym database: 204 = Tamron SP 24-70mm F2.8 Di USD 214 = Tamron SP 150-600mm F5-6.3 Di USD 224 = Tamron SP 90mm F2.8 Di Macro 1:1 USD |

Any thoughts towards splitting the 2 Tamron 28-200 lenses that currently are lumped together in the database?
They do have their similarities but in aspects are 2 totally different lenses inregards to minimum focus distance and how they focus. 71DM extends with focusing while the 171D is an IF design. Edit: I take that back as I just noticed they have been split already |
