Most of you may not know that one of the first dSLRs was made by Minolta. There have been a few post about this camera previously. The Minolta RD-175 sold in 1995 for ~15,000 USD. It uses the maxxum/alpha lens mount. It features 3 CCD sensors that are interpolated to achieve a 1.75 mp image. It is a 2x crop factor, static ISO 800, and limited to a max aperture of f6.7. It is also fully compatible with the xi flash system for wireless flash. The camera also uses a PCMCIA hard drive to store images on it. There is no LCD display on the back of the camera to view images. As a result it is about a 50/50 blend of film and digital.

For those of you with non-functional rd-175s and no cables to attach the hard drive to, I have some good news. After buying a Minolta RD-175 on eBay I discovered that I still had the software for the RD-175 from Minolta on an old computer. Minolta used to have this on their website, but have now removed it. This software includes the twain driver required to operate the camera. Previously in order to install the twian driver, you needed to format the hard drive in camera using a very rare SCSI cable. However, I noticed that the software I have had the twain driver included. For those of you tring to use an RD-175 without the twain driver, it will regester "Err" on the camera. The software also reads the .mdc files and can convert them to bitmap, jpeg, or tiff. This is important since Adobe no longer supports the file format in PS.

I took the PCMCIA hard drive that came with the RD-175 I bought and copy and pasted the twain driver directly onto it using the PCMCIA slot in my laptop. It worked, and now so does the RD-175. Although I haven't tried it yet, I assume this would also work on a CF card using a PCMCIA/compact flah adapter.

If anyone needs the software and twain drivers etc, please send me a pm and I will try my best to get a copy to you.

Edit - the software works with windows xp. I haven't tested compatability with vista or windows 7/8.

What is the file extension of that file you are mentioning ?

In theory the twain plug-in is there to add to your photoshop plug-ins and this has nothing to do with the driver or hidden file that is supposed to allow taking pictures with this camera.

It does fully work with a compactflash pcmia adapter, though you are still limited to a maximum useable storage of whatever it was that the original hard drives were.

I'd love to give the software a try on win7 and possibly get a proper conversion to bitmap or tiff. What I've used in the past gives terrible results.

PM me with your e-mail address

I have a full set of drivers/Instructions in pdf etc

The twain drivers may only work with some very old Photoshop version ( 4/5/6 maybe) Way before CS
