I have an old man story for you. I'm not sure how long it would have taken me to catch on if I were younger, so I just blame it on aging.

The little blue heron (little is part of its name, not just a size reference) above is the same one that was there a week ago when I took many shots, all failures.

It was an overcast day not like the usual sunny and bright sky we often have here. I saw the little blue and quickly changed my lens to the Vectis mirror. I had been shooting with a fast 50, so adjusted the ISO much higher. When looking through the viewfinder, I saw that my shutter speed was only 1/30. I quickly raised the ISO and found it only improved to 1/50. I looked up to the sky and commented to my shooting mate that it sure is a dim day. I upped the iso again to a level I don't like using and started trying to focus. I was having an unusually difficult time focusing and my images showed it. Then it finally occurred to me to look at the front of the lens. A square Zeiss lens wipe packet that was at the bottom of my bag had been wedged into the front of the mirror lens. With any other type of lens it would have been like a lens cap but mirrors will still show images with only 20% of the mirror unobstructed. Foolish, I felt. Glad the heron showed up again this past weekend.

Have you ever tried the oil painting mode? I did that on the A58 once, and the result was pretty effective. Kind of like the paintings people put on jigsaws. I must try that again some time (once every five years sounds about right ...    )
