Hi, I'm new here! I got referred to the assignments on the "New to dyxum" thread ;)
So here I go! This one was taken using my 18-55 kit lens. It was simply reversed and set to approximately 28mm. I used the camera's flash for lighting. I am not 100% sure that this is 1:1 or higher, but it seems pretty big to me. It was cropped a little bit on the left, just to center the O. It's a Minolta 35-70 lens cap. ![]() Edited by Galenfen - 24 November 2012 at 04:12 |

Don't know if it is 1:1 or greater, but in this case it doesn't matter that much, your innovative and simple approach got yjou the pass.
And, welcome to Dyxum of course. |

Having figured out the old 35-70 F4 gives pretty good magnification with extension tubes added I'll have a go at this one.
Single areole on an Opuntia microdasys rufida, about as close you'd ever want to get to those minute glochnid spines. Whole areole approximately 2-3mm wide. ![]() A350, 35-70 F4 at "macro" setting with a total of 68mm worth of tubes attached. No flash used but a diffuser on the sun side and reflector on the shade side to even the exposure. No cropping used. |

That's beyond 1:1 with simple means, so a good pass for macro without macro. Looking forward to your next one.

Thanks
![]() Think when I did my test and calculations that I ended up in the 1.7:1 region, with a workable minimum focus distance of around 5cm from the front of the lens. Got a macro rail, acctually a complete Auto Bellows 1 set, in the mail heading to me right now that ought to make focusing alittle easier in the future. |

You passed with flying colours beardedspoooon, I especially like the first one. Very innovative macro set-up and good composition to boot.

My second assignment. The subject is a British pound coin, which is 22.5mm in diameter (according to the Royal Mint). I used a Minolta 75-300 lens with a stack of 3 (cheap) close-up filters (1 + 2 + 4 = 7 diopters). Processed in Darktable, no cropping.

This was done with my 18-55 kit lens on a reversing ring. Because the lens wasn't talking to the camera the EXIF isn't very informative but the data is:
Lens zoomed to 35mm ISO 100 Shutter: .4 sec Aperture: Opened up about 5mm of lever travel using a paper clip. No idea what F stop that is. Around F11 maybe? Manual exposure +1.3EV Lighting from a strong desk lamp up close. Not much post processing. No cropping. ![]() EDIT: Forgot to mention it was taken the day it was posted - 21 June. Camera was an A58. The pen measured about 8mm from tip to bottom of circle on nib: ![]() I'd put the magnification at around 1.6x. Enjoyed this! PS Can someone explain to me how it's possible to manufacture a good quality reversing ring, market it on eBay & ship it internationally for $USD2.33? Amazing.
