It didn't pass because it just seemed a casual snapshot with no connection with the boy pictured. He's looking out of the frame and the softness didn't do anyting for me to get any more interest in the shot. I can see why you like it because it's your son and have a connectinon with him and what he was doing at the time, however for an outsider there's nothing to hold the attention. In your words probably "poor topic" Hope this helps. Edited by pegelli - 04 February 2010 at 07:34 |

a pass for me alphatini, the softness adds to the mysterious atmosphere and the "empty" look of the model. Only nit I have is that I find the B&W conversion not punchy enough. A bit more true black and true whites might help and don't think they'll take away from the motion blur softess.

Pavel, even though there is some softness in your shot the most prominent feature is the glowing light and not softness. Once I start seeing it like that the bottles and labels are actually quite sharp. So you enhanced the subject by lighting and not by softness, so we would like you to try again, and really make sure the softness is the most prominent feature enhancing the subject.

Either way your first entry was a pass except for a "technicality", so be patient and inspired and I'm sure you'll be able to provide the right shot for a pass. ![]() |

alphatini, I like your dedication to softness by having a passing entry higher on the page and then going back to the same assignment right after that!
However I find your new submission not as good. Yes it's soft but the softness does very little for us in terms of enhancing the beauty or mood of the subject. The light hand draws the most attention while it is really not the main subject (IMO). But since you like "softness" probably no problem to try this assignment again ![]() |

ok i get your point, i thought the softness was showing some "scare" feeling from the subject. i'll give it another try then..

Here is two very different sides of softness.
First you see the Town Hall of Stockholm at night out of focus with the Minolta 135 2,8 f 11 10 sec ISO 200 ![]() Then a motive that I thought wolud be nice as a revisit to the Symetry Assignment, but since I walked down in the warm subway from some -10 C outside I had some time to do a nice softness as well before the front lens dryed up ![]() Sig 17-70 @ 17 mm f 4,5 1/50 sec ISO 200 ![]() Cheers Christer. |
