I had a bit of a new Assignment idea: strobist. It goes a little something like this:
Thou shalt create a picture in a situation with little ambient light, with the use of an off-camera (wireless or PC-cord triggering) flash. The flash will enhance the beauty of the image or be used to make an image that would otherwise not be possible without flash (e.g. to reduce dynamic range to fit within what the camera can capture). The ambient and flash light will be pleasingly balanced; thou shalt not nuke. If necessary, you will use a gel to match the colour of the flash with ambient, or enhance the difference if appropriate. If you're a regular off-camera flash user, use of a gel is mandatory. an example (no gel, though it would have benefited from a CTO and lower WB colour temp). I'm also considering making this an everyone-invited one-month challenge, like the One Prime events. Your thoughts? |

I think these assignments are a great way to explore your camera's as well as your own technique and possibilities and so far there is little emphasis on light and the different qualities (ie. color) of light. (Many thanks to those spending a lot of time guiding newbies like me and others
![]() From other questions on Dyxum there seems to be a lack of knowledge concerning the use of flash/strobes either alone or in combination with ambient light. Questions like "how to use fill-in-light" - "when to use rear shutter" etc. seem to flourish. I therefore support polyglots proposition of including a new assignment using flash/strobe, but I would emphasize the two points mentioned above: 1) use of fill-in-light 2) use of rear curtain At least I would find it a convenient assignment on this time of the year when day light is a rare thing. |
