When I was new to landscape photography one of my first revelations was the discovery of pre-dawn colors. That magical couple of minutes, usually about fifteen to twenty minutes before sunrise. I also learned that smoke, pollution or other atmospheric characteristics could yield nearly unbelievable hues of the "standard" pre-dawn colors. Add to the wonderful natural colors is the usual situation of being alone in the peace and quiet. Who else gets up at 4:30 a.m. to see the pre-dawn? The first image below is from the Minolta 7D, early in my serious photography hobby. Comments and criticism welcome.

I must confess, I am mot much of an early bird, going out at 4.30AM for photography. Post sunset there can be similar colors at times that suit me better But on a serious note, it's a beautiful set overall Roger! I keep going back to #2 as my favourite with the somewhat mysterious atmosphere. The glowing track in #9 is very nice too.
TFS !

As Fred I'm no early bird. Perhaps I once was. It is the unpredictability of Dutch weather and the disappointment of getting out of bed pre-dawn to find bad light that got to me.

But I do appreciate early (or late) light when it is presented as in this set, particularly as in #8 and #9.

Nor am I an early bird , but what a stunning set with #2 and #9 as my favourites.

Roger, go on and treat us more of these "early bird"-shots. We love them.

Fully agree that early in the morning brings the best light, but as many commented, sacrifices have to be made. For me #2 is also the best, followed by #5 and #7. Always love this kind of wood. The last shot with the glowing rails is also very good; it is the kind of shot that gets better the more one looks to it. Great work, TFS Roger

I'm also an owl, not a lark, so pre-dawn doesn't compute for me unless it's somehow mandated by an itinerary I'm a part of.

That said, these are very striking images. My favourites (and it's hard to single them out) are ##2, 3, 5, 8 and 9.

Thanks for sharing.

A joy to browse through this early on the day colors , reflections and shadows in great compositions.
I like the seascape In # 3 with the sand in the foreground and the tracks in #9 leading the eyes

Wow, what a collection! It's a masterful lesson on light, color, silhouettes and getting up early! These are all excellent images which deserve to be printed in large formats and exhibited at some public venue!
Although the images are all excellent and it is difficult to choose a favorite I have a personal preference: #9 - just a stunning shot!

Yes you are right about the colors we all learn by trial and error. Of course I was drawn to the Monument Valley photo your 7D captured so well. I am your basic night owl like most here confess to being, something in my soul seems to wake up at the nights mysteries.

However I have no problem jumping out of bed at 4am if I know I have an Arches sunrise ahead of me or a Zion.
Where I live now there are fantastic "Belt of Venus" sunrises which seem to be different from these High Southwest mountain sunsets. Your sunrise clouds reminded me of.

Thanks for sharing your wisdom and photos
