Super Duper! Each superb photo seems even nicer than the last one! Keep up the great work, Mathieu! And thanks for sharing these beautiful photos with us! Looks damned cold! We've had a few light coatings down south here, in the SL valley, but the mountains are now snow covered. Nothing like the "Great White North" though!

On Saturday I visited Llangollen for their Winter Warmer gala, featuring the last weekend of Black 5 44806 at the railway. This loco was bought by the late Kenneth Aldcroft and moved to 'Steamtown' at Carnforth at the end of British Rail main line steam in August 1968. It has not always been in working order, however. After working for a few years, a fault was discovered, and it spent time as a static exhibit, first at Steamport, Southport and when that closed, at the Museum of Science and Industry. In 1993 it was finally moved to Llangollen for repairs, and entered service there in 1995 and has been based there ever since, including another overhaul, completed in 2007. Following the death of Mr Aldcroft, his daughter inherited the locomotive and sold it to a wealthy benefactor of the North York Moors Railway.

Our first ride of the day was on the two coach suburban train, hauled by BR standard tank 80072, seen here at Carrog with the 10:25 to Llangollen. These vehicles were designed for short commuter runs, there is no corridor to maximise seating, each compartment has a door on each side.

There have been more excellent photos photos here the past couple of weeks.

CP 112 @ Exshaw: Outstanding composition, Mathieu!

"Llangollen Winter Warmer Gala": Alan, I love the entire set! Beautiful work and locomotives. I love the two compositions of the facing engines as well as "3802 at Llangollen". "Great Western freight engine 3802 approaches Berwyn" you've captured a beautiful landscape and steam locomotive in action!

glefebvre, there is a lot of railroad history in this set! Very impressive what the A7r can produce right out of camera! I wish I'd had the opportunity to see that SP cab forward in action as well as the Western Pacific (is it an F7?) which may very well have been seen at work here in Salt Lake City.

Thanks everyone for sharing these great photos!

Alan,

I know I'm repeating myself, but you are a very lucky man! Here in Utah, we have the Heber Valley Railroad which owns three steam engines, none of which are currently operational. We've not had steam since 2010. #75 has been in the shops for going on 10 years undergoing a complete rebuild and #618 has finally started boiler re-certification after going cold in 2010. Operating a steam engine is expensive and HVRR, being state owned and operated has, quite apparently, a limited budget!

That museum locomotive photo that Glen posted is a cab-forward 4-8-8-2 Baldwin engine designed for the Southern Pacific RR specifically for the long tunnels of the Donner Pass. More here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Pacific_4294 - SP 4294

This is another great set. I like the B&W treatment of #s 1 and 4 and yes, having the railroad employee in view works. Some of the best RR photos are those with RR people at work. The whole set is beautiful - but I love #2.

Regards,

Kelly

Interesting Kelly, an ingenious design to have the chimney behind the crew, a pity it only survived 12 years in service. Yes, we have lots of preserved railways, plenty of rail nuts over here and there are a few wealthy patrons to help with the costs.

Mathieu, that is one long train and coupled to just one engine. Even if it's all empties it surely needs more than one unit.

I'm assuming it's broken down as there appears to be a man stood by the coupling. I bet he was feeling the cold up there.

Great photos you share. The scenery is almost as amazing and the railway.

That little thing at the left is one example of the first diesel locomotors of the series 100, used for shunt work and pulling trains for track maintenance near stations. About 50 were built and their nikname was "sik", litarally translated this means "goatee".

Actually, the engine picture is idling at the back of the train! There are 2 engines pulling at the front.

I would like to congratulate Mathieu Tremblay for having his "Trackside Grain, Vol. 221" photo published in the current issue {April} of Trains Magazine -- a two page spread at that! Well done Mathieu! Keep up the great work!

Looking through these pages, I feel inspired!

Nicknamed the "Black Five" this Loco is a Stanier Class 5 (4-6-0).
Here, she's just hauled out of the Severn Tunnel and is passing through Severn Tunnel Junction on route to Cardiff.

BLACK FIVE

A77 * Minolta HSG 80-200/2.8 * 1/400th * f/4 * ISO100

Heading back East towards the Severn Tunnel she's running late at full chat, making up time to clear the tunnel.

Another beautiful Swiss railroad photo, Paul! I enjoy the small peek I get into Swiss railroading that you have provided here in these forums the past few years. Thank you very much.

I like the long focal length compression Very nice!

Two exceptional photos, Peter. Both are beautiful! Except I think the old gal needs a little electrical work? Getting a sharp photo of a moving train after dark is not easy! Great exposure! Very nice work!

Thanks Kelly, much appreciated.

It's a shame these old 'steamers' had to go but you can see why; they do have 'soul' though and we do get to see them from time to time thanks largely to steam enthusiasts.

Whilst waiting for the main event, I took these more mundane images. This is a stalwart of secondary express services between provincial towns and cities, the "British Rail Class 158 Express Sprinter"

SPRINTER

A77 * Minolta HSG 80-200/2.8 * 1/640th * f/4 * ISO100

I fairly sure this is an early ('70s) Intercity 125 Diesel.
Operating speed 125 mph, maximum speed 148 mph making it still the fastest diesel-powered train in the world.
Old hat now!

INTERCITY 125

A77 * Minolta HSG 80-200/2.8 * 1/800th * f/4 * ISO100

I set off for a bike ride on 2 May but was distracted by the sight of three steam locomotives lined up at the Snowdon Mountain Railway's Llanberis yard, an unusual sight now that the railway have cut back the use of steam. The two surviving locomotives, 2 Enid and 3 Wyddfa from the line's opening in 1895 stand alongside 6 Padarn from 1922. Currently, only four steam locomotives are operational. They had been specially lined up for a visiting group of German narrow gauge railway operators.

Number 2 "Enid", one of two locomotives used on the opening day. Number 1 was involved in a fatal accident and scrapped. Since the opening day there have been no further fatal accidents, only a derailment in 1987 involving No.7 'Ralph' which has never been repaired, the railway having recently taken delivery of its first diesels.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/alanfrombangor/14130398154/">

Number 3 "Wyddfa" was positioned for the visitors to climb inside the cab and take photographs, a rare opportunity for a clear view of the front end which is normally up against the coach.

Diesel 11 "Peris" runs into the station with a works train
http://www.flickr.com/photos/alanfrombangor/13949181940/">

A vending machine was in the wagon at the back and was unloaded, presumably defective. There is a cafe at the summit, serviced by the railway.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/alanfrombangor/14132870252/">

Number 6 Padarn, built in 1922 left at 10:30 to take the party to the summit in the "Snowdon Lily" coach. From the railway's website: 'The Snowdon Lily is built on the original chassis and bogie from the original carriage of 1896. The unique original nature of our railway means that the visitor of today will experience exactly what our ancestors did back in 1896 and see for themselves how beautiful the mountain is as they journey through the clouds to Yr Wyddfa.'

Yr Wyddfa is the Welsh name for Snowdon, the highest British mountain outside Scotland.

To the left of the "Snowdon Lily" coach can be seen the remaining operational steam locomotive, number 4 "Snowdon".
