Yes, he did own the Neeltje Jacoba for a short period of time some twenty years after her retirement. It continues to haunt her.
During her active life of nearly forty years she saved more than 200 people from the sea.

Hi Guys
Thanks for the comments.

The ship is the Torea.
Which is a local Coastal Tanker.
But it is relatively small as tankers go,
@ 175 x 31m, and 25,000 tonnes gross.

The Northerner

The Northerner is an 81 foot long, two masted schooner.
It shipwrecked on November 29, 1868 five miles southeast of Port Washington, Wisconsin.
The bottom of the ship currently lies under 130 feet of water.

Cheers,

Addy's picture of a modest boat made remember these pictures of diamond mining ships off Walvis Bay, Namibia. I think at least the second one actually is not in use, but anchored to reserve rights to do the mining in that spot later.

Both these relics are conservation projects in Southampton. Their future seems uncertain as the Aeronautica Project seems to have stalled at the moment.

CALSHOT (QM2 Behind) Built by John I. Thornycroft & Co. Ltd (Southampton), fitted with triple-expansion steam engines and launched on 4 November 1929. Principally used for local towing and tender duties she also served as tender to the original Queen Mary and other liners on trooping duties during the war.

Wrong lens but being somewhat of a Jack Ryan fan I couldn't help myself.

Taken during a dolphin cruise where I was aiming to use the SH but had to resort to longer armament. All set in a prime spot on the bow from the moment we left the dock but was literally shoulder charged out of my spot by a mob of chinese tourists at the first sight of dolphins. Had to resort to step back, change lens and shoot over their heads from a second level.

The RWS78 is a patrol vessel of 'Rijkswaterstaat' ( http://www.rijkswaterstaat.nl/en/ - http://www.rijkswaterstaat.nl/en/ ), division Zeeland (this is the Zeeland that makes the other one down under 'New').

It is used for patrol duties and is designed to handle rescue operations as a command vessel. The second bridge is designed to be the command post for such operations.

Kelly, nice to see you giving that old ROKKOR an airing. I think the way you included the lamp posts receding into the distance prevented the foreground one from being a bit of an ugly intrusion. I like the forest of fore stays too.

Here's one taken with my old 35mm ROKKOR and if you're wondering why a Tractor qualifies for this thread, all will be revealed in the next post unless, of course, anyone can guess.

Thanks, Peter!

I was on vacation in Germany -- Heiligenhafen, Ostsee with my wife and friends. I find it very difficult in that type of environment to get more than just snapshots. I need time to take everything in, and to really see and compose a shot -- that that may be true for most photographers. My freinds and wife were always very irritated that they had to wait for me.This one just sort of popped out at me, and personally I really like it. The 35mm Rokkor is quiet nice on the A7. I also had 24mm Rokkor and Fisheye Rokkor with me. The 24mm though very sharp with film, doesn't do as well with the A7. Though still very nice. I have yet to master the fisheye, though I had some fun with it.

As for your photo, I would say he has launched or is retrieving a boat. Quite common here in Utah with motor boats, though not using tractors and there are normally ramps built for this purpose and the pickup truck used with a boat trailer. Of course we have no ocean, only lakes and reservoirs. Sailboats one mostly sees here on the Salt Lake, though the lake levels now are very low and the marinas are drying up. Lack of water is a big problem inthe western US.

Regards,

Kelly

Beer and Boats yes but you can keep the fish.

The Ostsee is a nice place to be Kelly, I was in Lubeck a year or two ago which was a starting point for a trip into the Harz Mountains.

LOL, I know what you mean about holiday photography, I'm always getting flac for lagging behind and sometimes getting lost (thank Techs for the smartphone). There again, I'd get just as much flac if I didn't get any pictures to look at afterwards. It's a hard life!!

You're spot on with the Tractor; in this case it's waiting to recover the Sidmouth Lifeboat.

Well, my wife (German) and most of my German friends and acquaintances have an affinity for Herring and especially Matjes. Only once did I not have fish, but only once Matjes. Not crazy about it! We visited many craft breweries, including Kluevers (pictureed). Some great beers. The Hamburg brewery, Ratsherrn had some great ones. Liked their IPA especially.

This is a great set of photos, Peter! Man, these Rokkor 35mms really perform nicely on the A7 series! Very sharp and nice color. Did you have to do much processing, or are these jpegs out of the camera?

Kelly

Kelly, I absolutely hate those Matjes, once was more than enough.
The beer is a different matter, I'll drink as much as I can get away with.

Thanks Kelly, all the heavy lifting is down to that wonderful ROKKOR lens. I only took Raws and they were processed through DXO straight to JPEG. The colours are down to a beautiful day and the unrivalled (IMO) Minolta colours.

Matjes = maatjes or, to be precise, maatjesharing, called https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soused_herring - soused herring in English. It isn't German, it is Dutch. Kaken (gibbing) is invented by Willem Beukelszoon the city of Biervliet (Zeeland) in 1380. Just to be perfectly clear. And maatjesharing tastes great - you guys simply aren't used to it!

Of course its Dutch. I am aware of that, Addy, but we were eating it in Germany, Schleswig-Holstein specifically. And yes, I'm not used to it, and likely never will be! However, I am used to German Bier! Acquired the taste very early on in my youth living in Heidelberg! Dad was from New Orlean and loved sea food, so we ate our fair share as kids, just not herring. Maybe they don't eat herring in New Orleans? Maybe mostly crayfish!

Peter,

The citizens of Luebeck and Hamburg did a remarkable job of rebuilding many damaged historic buildings after the war. Kiel was also flattened, rebuilt but not restored. Most structures I saw were of more recent design as far as I could tell when we visited that city. Anyway, Schleswig-Holstein is a very beautiful part of Germany and we had a wonderful time there.

Following on from the previous lifeboat post, Sidmouth also has a smaller Lifeboat which uses a different technique for recovery, they simply drive it onto the shore at speed, makes a heck of a thump. You can see the beach shelves quite steeply so the boat pops up onto it and they all leap out and manhandle it up the ramp.

I was too late to catch the craft coming in as it was half a mile from where I was taking pics of the other one and I'm too old and OOC to run, even for a good Photo Op.

US Navy's Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyer USS Jason Dunham made an unofficial visit to Helsinki this weekend. As I read from the news about this, I decided to go to West Harbour where it was said to be docked to snap few ship photos. But when I arrived to Jätkäsaari, I eventually realized this was easier to say than done: the destroyer was docked at the southmost pier and thus it was pretty much impossible to go near it since it was behind the fence which bordered the restricted area of ferry terminals' vehicle entrance. So, this is about the best view I got:

Luckily I was able to see at least some other ships (including the Russian icebreaker under construction at the Arctech Helsinki shipyard) elsewhere in the area:
