These birds are in a shelter because they're injured or ill.
1. Young Bald Eagle - I've watched him for a year or so. His feathers recently went to white from the dark brown. http://chrisrobison.smugmug.com/Boyd-Hill-Nature-Preserve/i-8GMfgmm/A">
2. Barn Owl http://chrisrobison.smugmug.com/Boyd-Hill-Nature-Preserve/i-q3tg6Gd/A">

Was just in California for a meeting at Asilomar Conference Center, outside of Monterey and found a dead tree with this Acorn Woodpecker and was surprised when the little one stuck its head out - this is a huge crop as I was not expecting to do any birding and only took my a77/SON 18-135mm combo. I was about 20 yards away from the tree.

This is an escapee that was spotted in Tampines, Singapore by a birder. This was the bird of the week with many shooters trying to look for this one fellow. I only managed to get this on my third attempt when a fellow birder spotted it on the tree and told me about it. Waited for 15 minutes and this beauty finally flew down. Although it was quite friendly, it does like to stay among the grass and was pretty jumpy. This were my best shots of it taken while I proned on the ground.

Thank you. Some of that is due to Darktable which I really like for PP. In particular I can completely blitz noise in backgrounds using drawn and/or parametric masks. The parametric masks in particular are a great feature. I think subjective clarity is enhanced by really stomping on noticeable noise.
I've been pleased with some of my shots recently. I might be improving or alternatively just getting lucky . There certainly is a learning curve for birds. Just finding good locations is time consuming.
I'm heading to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamington_National_Park - Lamington National Park on Sunday. That should mean more colourful birds. At the least parrots as you can feed the birds at http://www.oreillys.com.au/ - O'Reilly's and there is always plenty of parrots. Of course in the national park proper, feeding any animal is rightfully banned.

Wasn't sure if I should post this shot here as it could probably go in a few different threads, but it is of a bird even if he is retreating
Also this was taken with the Tamron 90mm which I rarely use for landscape or bird photography but was the only lens I had on me apart from the CZ16-35mm.

Cool I hope you enjoy your new purchase. I must admit that my Sigma 150-500 has been neglected a fair bit since I got the a99 as I prefer my borrowed 70-400G. The reason for this is that the AF is much faster on the 400G something I found frustrating at times with the Sigma. IQ is comparable with both though the 400G is slightly better. BTW the Sigma is awesome for shooting the moon on a cropped sensor body - have fun.

I believe you are right mate, just got told the same in an aussie based birding forum. Guess I didn't stare hard enough at the field guides, or more likely still don't have the eye needed to separate some birds!

A farmer was mowing up a field and there are fair few of these birds circling around and occasionally gliding in to scoop up piles of grass. I didn't ever notice any bird dropping his cargo off anywhere though. Then again, it was on another side of a hedge.
I believe these may be Red Kites....?
I didn't use a "conventional" birding rig. All three with A6000, SEL55-210, cropped to about 3000px (half size) then downscaled to fit on the Dyxum web page.

Very colorful and well chosen dof. The 150-500 works well. |

Lovely shot, Snowfella |
Thank you. I'm having a blast with the new lens, first new lens I've ever bought and it's been an eye opener. Not that I fault the old Minolta gear I already had but this one has opened up a whole new world of what's possible and I haven't even had it a week yet. Though I have to admit I have to figure out a new way of carrying my gear, old big beercan works just fine hanging off straps to the camera body but I'm not comfortable doing the same with this hunk of plastic and glass.
2 shots from the other day, just no way of getting clean views of these but it's what I'd call more habitat photos. Galah's

@ mambo the focus on the eye in that last one is spot on - very nice
@ snowfella glad you're enjoying the Sigma mate and looks like you are handling it very well. I have been neglecting mine a lot lately favouring the 70-400G I borrowed from a friend but since giving it back a couple of weeks ago I thought I'd dust of the Sigma and do some birding. The following are a couple of the results. BTW I still find the AF on the Sigma to be very frustrating especially in low light plus it does still suffer from more CA than the 400G. Still a nice sharp lens and the extra reach is also a plus.

Also Snowfella have you decided which you prefer with the Sigma either the OS on the lens or SSS in the camera? I did a test on my a65 when I first bought the lens and found the OS on the lens was slightly better. Would love to hear your thoughts on this though. (sorry admins if I shouldn't be asking on this thread).
