Nice bit of an afternoon walk along the local river had me luck across a very friendly Laughing Kookaburra that let me in close.

The males start changing colour at around 7 years old, can see the dark patches starting to come in in the above shot.
This is an old shot of a fully coloured male, sadly not out in the light as the feathers take on an almost electric blue sheen in direct sunlight.

G'day All,

Just got back from doing a 10 day road trip to far north queensland (approx 5000km return) and spent 4 days at an internationally known birding site photographing Kingfishers (Kingfisher Lodge) and other birds as well of course.

The area is mostly rainforest and at the time there was rain and very low light and seeing other people were also staying and wandering around the sanctuary, it wasn't possible to have my normal flash setup, so higher ISO and Low shutterspeed was required, so sorry about the noise.

Tough to pick a fav but the Robin waving to you before take off is funny.

Thanks Sashi,

The blues are really that deep, and as they keep in mostly deep shade, with highlights beyond them, they vanish before your eyes and just blend in. From now until early March the kingfishers will be nesting prior to flying back to Papua New Guinea. Each year they make their way down the Qld east coast where the areas are conducive for their nesting requirements.

The robin and other small birds were taking advantage of a natural pool of water in the trunk of a fallen down tree, they mostly just used it as an area to bathe. So the robin was shaking off water between dips.

Regards,
Craig

Keith, Australia is not exactly known for its picturesque landscapes and alpine mountains and lakes, so we do need to have such beautiful birds going for us that we can enjoy and have other countries to envy, along with our golden and silica white beaches and coral reef's.

Nice shot of your robin.
btw, we do have our plain-jane birds as well, we just tend to look for the more colourful species.

With little help of the Internet, I found the name, which is rather obvious when you look at the bird: white-winged dove (Zenaida asiatica).

And the following bird is no dove, but a northern hawk-owl (Surnia ulula):

Turns out that hole bottom left in the second shot is their nesting burrow and they are right now feeding chicks.
Be heading back again as soon as I can get a free morning, good chance that spot will get some reasonable morning light.

A few birds I spotted this morning on a short walk from my house, showing that (if you're lucky!) you don't need expensive gear or a long drive to get some interesting pics. All shot with Sony A58, Minolta 100-300mm f4-5.6 APO, and a Teleplus 1.4x TC, mostly MF.

A Heron at the local city park lake:

Now where did I put the other leg? It's here somewhere.

I can see you!

A few feet away, another interloper after my fish ...

But the Kingfisher decides to fish elsewhere ...

On a very tall tree on the other side of the lake (which is many miles from the sea) a more surprising visitor:

The adult cormorant dries its wings after showing its young how to fish in a very easy location:

I am impressed, even if these are not overly sharp, knowing that these are by a relatively cheap lens with a teleconverter is amazing. I now understand why you describe your version of the 100-300 APO as "sharp"! I am wondering if it is as sharp as my 100-300 APO (D) that I bought from a member here and that is also quite sharp. I tend to describe it as sharp enough - it is not as sharp as my 70-400G, but I got some really nice pictures out of it using it at f/8. It is a small lens that I can pack when I do not expect much use for a tele lens but still want to make sure I have some reach.

But enough about the little lens that could - this is with the 70-400G, I haven't processed this one properly (I only used a filter from the free Photoshop Mobile App because the colour was slightly off) and I might post a cropped and processed version later - but for now, this will do:

Thanks for the comments, Addy!
Yes, I realise my pics are less sharp than I'd like - certainly less sharp than I'd expect in non-bird photography. Most of them were cropped quite heavily, and as you say it is quite impressive that the old (and reasonably priced) Minolta film-era lens was 'sharp enough' to take heavy cropping at full FL and full aperture, with a TC on and with a 20MP APS-C camera too. Most tele zooms (and older MF prime teles too) are too stressed by the high pixel density to stand heavy cropping without unacceptable CA (which I currently have no means of correcting), still less with any TC attached. One day I hope to get a better long lens, maybe a 70-400 or one of the Tamrons, but until then I just have to get more patient and put mroe effort into getting close (and maybe going out early before the hundreds of dogs & owners come past ... )

I think I was fairly lucky in that the birds are getting considerably more tame now than when I started watching them with binoculars forty-odd years ago, and part of that is because the park is much more heavily used by people now than it was then. But I was pleased because after all these years, this was the first usable picture of a Kingfisher I've managed to get! They are really quite small!

Superb lighting you've managed to stage!
Maybe an extra fill box on the rhs next time, hair light behind?

Ha! That one was taken from a hide in my yard. I did put up a reflector initially but it spooked too many of the birds. It turned out that the gravel driveway and the water bowl between the bird and I provided enough fill.

Very nice--I like the first especially well. You did a particularly excellent job of emphasizing the subject and isolating it from the background in it.

Whoever named that a Red-bellied need to have their eyes checked!

First walk of the new year today and I got rained out, no weather sealing in the old Sigma so don't like taking too many chances with it.

Not sure if I should clone out the stray bits of rain or leave it as is.

Nice shots Johan and I for one don't find the stray drops of rain distracting at all - in fact if you could send a few of them to this side of the country that would be good.

Nice one Steve!
I'd send some your way if I could, though half an hours worth of drizzle doesn't do much other than raise the humidity a touch I'm afraid.
And we are expecting a scorcher of a weekend if the forecast comes through, 42C on Saturday and peaking at 45C on Sunday.
