Let's get the fun cardse rolling!!

Here is the final list.
I did my best to maximize the geographical spread, but the UK and USA are well represented in the 18 participants, so some overlap was unavoidable.

The idea is to send cards to 5 people below you on the list (wrapping the list if you are close to the bottom). For example: #6 will be sending postards to #7, #8, #9, #10 and #11.
At the end of the list, we will just roll forwward to #1.
So #16 will send a card to #17, #18, #1, #2 and #3.

To make this happen each person should PM his postal address to 5 people above himself on the list. For example #3 should PM his postal address to #2, #1, #18, #17 and #16. Don't post your address here!!

And if you plan to print more than 5 cards then just announce in the thread that you have freebies to take - I'm pretty sure somebody will voluenteer to get one of those via a PM with their address.

When PMing your postal address please mind its formatting - put it in exactly same format as expected by your post office: different countries use different formatting and it can be painful to make sure that all is done correctly.

BTW, the unspoken agreement is that postal addresses exchanged by PMs will be used solely for the purpose of Dyxum Postards Exchange. Please mind privacy of fellow Dyxumers!

======================================

ADub128 had kindly offered to set up the Dyxum Postcard Exchange for 2019, but it seems he is too busy, since he hasnít been online since that offer.
In order not to miss this great fun challenge this year, I have decided to step in and get it going.
Like last year, I would propose to us last yearís way of exchangning addresses (so there wonít be a draw in order to keep the organisational effort limited. See below for further details).
Letís hope ADub128 is still able to join.

===================

Letís get the 2019 Postcard Exchange process underway! For those of you who weren't involved last time, the details for registration can be found below.

SUBSCRIPTION IS OPEN UNTIL 13 OCTOBER

INTRODUCTION
The Dyxum Postcard Exchange is open to all members of the Dyxum community.
The intent of the exchange is to share prints of our own photographs with other like minded Minolta/Sony SLR users (& other hangers on!), whether Digital or Film, via sending them as post cards.

THE PROCESS
The exchange will be structured as follows:
Registration - This will be a set period as announced in the initial call to exchange thread.

Each member who wishes to participate in the exchange must register during the sign on period. Please do this by replying in this thread only - do not send any postal address details to anyone yet - we will ask for this later.

FOR THIS TO BE A SUCCESS, YOU MUST BE COMMITTED TO SEND CARDS TO ALL YOUR DESIGNATED RECIPIENTS

You should show your intent to be involved in the call to exchange in this thread, but please DO NOT POST YOUR ADDRESS DETAILS ON THE PUBLIC FORUM!!!

Like last year there wonít be a draw for practical reasons. Once we have closed the subscription, we will create a list where we will try to create maximal geographical spread and travel distances for the cards.

The idea is to send cards to 5 people below you on the FINAL LIST (to be published after the submission closing date!). For example: #6 will be sending postcards to #7, #8, #9, #10 and #11. To make this happen each person should PM his postal address to 5 people above himself on the list. For example #3 should PM his postal address to #2, #1, #20, #19 and #18.

Print and Post - The second to last and most important step is up to you guys. Its time to get a printing and sending them out!

How you print them and how you do your postcards is totally up to you. Keep in mind that some postal systems may have maximum sizes for postcards, so as a rough guide, printing standard 6 inch by 4 inch cards would be a good standard. You can print using home printers, but it may work out better in the long run to print using a mini-lab service (& probably cheaper).

The postcard backs, again its totally up to you. You will find that quite a few places will sell self adhesive backs, which may make the process just that little bit easier.

Once you are done, address the cards (please get them right!), put the right postage stamp on for the destination and send them on their way!

Receiving cards - Hopefully, over the following weeks you should start to receive postcards to your letter box. Enjoy the cards, marvel at others photography and be inspired!

Once the registrations are done and the print, post and receive process is well underway, a new thread will be started that can be used for feedback and other general discussion. Itís a good idea to post that you have received a card, so we know that they are hitting the mark. Itís also a good idea to maybe make a comment or two about the cards that you receive.

With any luck, the whole process should be done and dusted over a two or three month period (one month approx. for registrations, two month for printing, sending and receiving).

RULES

Now, without getting too wordy, I think there are a few common sense rules. Briefly:

Be Committed - For this to be a success, the members who participate should be committed to seeing the process through. If you say you are going to send cards, please ensure that you do send cards!

Image guidelines - As this is done under the banner of Dyxum, please ensure that the images you send conform to their guidelines. (I.E., no racist, sexist, violent, pictures depicting cruelty, drug use, sex or nudity)

Text guidelines - A short description of the postcards' subject is useful for the recipient !

SOME GENERAL GUIDELINES

Theme - The theme is open subject, but it might be a good idea to show something local to where you live. Maybe show an image that was taken, say, within 100miles/160km of your home? This is not a strict rule, but try and keep it close to home. Not that we don't want to see your vacation photos, but the point of the exchange is to make unique postcards from your locale.

Personalize your cards - Once you get the list of recipients, maybe it would be a good opportunity to do some research on the members on your list? Maybe you could personalize the message or the image on the card? Maybe you might be able to send them something that they may not normally look at and see? When receiving cards, look at what has been sent to you with an open mind.

Don't be tempted to stick your card between two pieces of cardboard and put them in an envelope. Half the fun of sending and receiving postcards is how they end up at the other end. Sure, they might be a bit bent, but that adds to the character of a postcard.

Once all your postcards have been received (or if you get no notification, towards the end of the exchange period), maybe show what you had sent?

Try not to be lazy! Make each postcard a different image (if you can).
Don't forget, this is a Film Friendly activity as well!
If anyone wants to make suggestions to these rules or guidelines, just make a post.

Lots of participants from lots of different countries make these exchanges fun, so sign up now !!

Good to hear that all is well with you Art. Family first sounds as a sensible prioritisation, work may be debatable . I'll give a shout for help if necessary.

PMs sent to the five IDs above me on the list and I'll start despatching when I receive all addresses from the five below me.

In previous years I have launched myself into this challenge straight away and sent off cards with enthusiasm. TBH it has then been a little disappointing when weeks after the start date, and sometimes even months after (!) some post to say that they have yet to "get round to making their cards and sending them".

So, for any first timers in this great idea for a challenge, don't be too surprised if, after an initial burst of activity of finding cards from all over the globe landing on your door mat sometimes the odd stray one pops up after you have almost forgotten about DPE!

And of course, some sadly never make it to their destinations at all

So lets look forward to hearing about what cards you send out, and later please show us what you receive, interesting stamps and all. I think this is my favourite Dyxum activity (apart from Dyxum meets of course )

Good luck everyone.

My pleasure Shay! Didn't want to miss it this year

I will definitely have some spares. Didn't want to go with one type, so ordered two sets of five.
Any volunteers can send me a PM with their address for an extra card on top of the five from the initial list.

I've sent my deets to my five senders, received same from four of my five recipients.

Now to work out what are suitably postcardy images taken close enough to home. Looking at commercial postcards, I guess I'll need unnaturally supersaturated colours, with a really strange white balance - and as this is Dyxum, taken using an appropriate camera.

I'm in the process of selecting pictures too. Like adhox, figuring out which pics are the most "postcardy" can be tough. I did shoot several rolls of film this year ... so maybe a mix of grainy black and white film (Minolta!!), and some over clean digital (Sony).

With luck, my mail drop happens by the weekend ... have fun, folks! DPE is on!

@nandbytes ... we're supposed to write meaningful messages?! My notes were mostly descriptive in my most decent handwriting. My handwriting has always been horrible.

My theme ... "Scenes of Southern California".

Glad to see the energy here. Looking forward to receiving some cards soon, and hope mine land safely. No rush though! We all lead busy lives.

Four of the five are now in the hands of the Royal Mail and should be wending their way to far flung places; USA, Brazil, Australia and London!

I'm still waiting for the fifth address and then that one will follow.

BTW, I have some spares if anyone would like one. Drop me a PM with your (real) name and postal address and first come, first served.

Love this event.

Brian

Postcards going out today.

I've already received a postcard. My plan is to update this post as they come in.

From ADUB128:
A nice image from S. California of his son's skateboard. Thank you ADUB128

@MartyMoose -- wow, that was quick! Dropped in the mailbox Friday (10/18), arrived Tues (10/22), so traveled about 200 miles per day (about 340km/day).

I don't see any damage on that card at all, not even little barcode markings.

This is part of my "Scenes of Southern California" series ... I'll post the originals when all of my cards have landed. 1 down, 5 to go. So far, I've sent one extra.

PM your address if you want one of my extras! I have one "global" postcard stamp left, 2 U.S./domestic stamps (I can always buy more, of course!).

I am so behind on all of this, and it's not helped by my printer failing on me.

I hope to sort something out before Halloween!

Okey, 4/5 postcards have been submitted (can't really say I sent as it will be Posti that prints and sends these). For the last one I would need to get the address first...

Since I use this online service for sending my cards, I have to say that I have only a faint idea (from the card preview) what these will look like, so I will be interested knowing more about things like print quality and paper type.

And I got my first postcard (from Fred S.) today (oops, yesterday). I have some problem in getting Linux scanning software to cooperate with my HP multifunction, so I didn't yet scan it, but I will try again later.

The first one arrived the day before yesterday, a beautiful flower from Fred's garden and the card is in excellent shape without any scratches or buffs. I'll scan it later when a few more have arrived.

I got my prints. I need to remember to add 0.5 stops to photos before printing - every year I am disappointed to discover that my prints are too dark...

Anyway, now I need to make postcards from the prints, get the right stamps (last year it was also an issue, with different rates for different countries with no correlation between the price and the distance and lack of the stamps with the needed value in the post office) and drop the cards in the box. The big question is how long it will take until arrive... last year it took very long time...

First card arrived today

A beautiful jellyfish picture from ADub128.
Pretty fast all the way from California and in a good shape, although the dark background is hiding an orange barcode at the front.
The small white frame at the right is due to my cropping.

The familiar USA world stamp at the back

Many thanks for sending Art!!

Wow, Fred, I can't believe my card made it to you already! Yours was a spare card I sent a day later than my first five postcards. So, roughly six days to arrive -- that's about 950 miles per day, ~1500 km per day -- from the west coast of the U.S. to Europe. So fast, but in very good shape!!

And, if anyone else wants a spare card from me, please send a DM! I've gotten really good at printing and sending for the DPE over the years,

Fred, I think ADub128 sent me the wrong card. It arrived today in excellent condition all the way from California, yet it is of some "Dutch Angle Palm Trees"

Many thanks Art. Up to my ears selling my house at the moment with viewings every day and so little time to "play with computers" (she says ), but I'll do some scanning soon and share your postcard with the others.

That's two arrived so far, so soon.

Awesome, @nandbytes! All of my cards are landing so quickly ... one week's time. A little bit of scarring plus the barcoding, but that's part of the charm of the DPE.

@All, my Echo Park image was shot with an SRT-101!! Old school.

Ok, with my laptop I managed to get scanning working...

So, this is the photo on the card from Fred:

https://hezu.1g.fi/kuvat/sekalaiset/Dyxum%20Postcard%20Exchange/FredS-dahlia.jpg">

Surprisingly this scan shows many white dots or scratches, but when I look at the card there doesn't seem to be any...

And I scanned also the other side since there is this fancy Dyxum stamp:
https://hezu.1g.fi/kuvat/sekalaiset/Dyxum%20Postcard%20Exchange/FredS-card.jpeg">

And although I blurred the address, I now noticed the postal code is missing one zero, although luckily the postal services have managed to direct this to the correct address. But then, I remember hearing that once upon time (sometimes in previous millenium) my cousin's family got some mail with address "Kerrostalo, Kuusankoski" - the first word means apartment building in Finnish, the latter is the city name.

Yes a little damage, my postcards aren't as thick as the two I received. Hope it survives!

I had to look up SRT-101. I liked that it was shot on a film camera, it's not a-mount but I'll let that pass

My first two cards arrived today. Living as I do in the ancient university town of Oxford I attracted a picture of the ancient university of Cambrudge (The Other Place) from @nandbytes

https://flic.kr/p/2hAMXHQ">

And the other came from @Pegelli showing the not-so-ancient university of Antwerp (nog een andere plats, excuse my broken Flemish/Dutch)

https://flic.kr/p/2hAM3Fb">

Thanks, both!

I don't think there's an A-mount requirement for DPE. I used my ancient SR-mount, and my more modern A-mount and E-mount cameras for my shots this DPE season.

The reason I'm with Sony today is because I used this SRT-101 and an XE-7 in my youth. It's amazing how young we get "branded", LOL.

I'd love to get into FE-mount gear too, but that just means even more lenses, right? One day.

My second card arrived today, a street view from nandbytes (his own street), with a beautifully coloured sunset or sunrise sky. Unfortunately there is a big white blemish right in that sky, but for the rest it arrived in good shape. Thanks Anand.

I'll wait for a few more cards before scanning and posting here.
