Thanks Mirek. I bought some affordable Zomei filters in the 6xx range just to try, but find it harder to get nice results than with the 720nm so far. Need to experiment a lot more I guess. Quality wise the Zomei's seem OK so far.

Things can go wrong with an IR photo session, isnt't it Mirek?

During my recent https://www.dyxum.com/dforum/short-nature-walk-in-veghel_topic138340_post1616508.html#1616508 - nature walk , I also brought my full spectrum converted NEX-5N, with 18-55mm OSS.
I thought I had put on the 720nm filter, but afterwards I concluded it was the 850nm.
That works best in BW (at least for me), so here are a few, mostly Dutch landscape shots. The corn fields worked well here I think.

Beautiful compositions, Fred!
Although the "leading lines" compos are really excellent, my top favorite is #1 - wonderful layering from front to back ground. But the vignetting is conspicuous (not really detrimental to the overall effect, though) - what lens did you use?

TFS!

Thanks Harald! I used the 18-55 OSS kit-lens (as mentioned in the intro ).
I added a bit of vignetting in #1, otherwise the overall picture would have been been very bright.

Fred,
As I've commented previously, I'm not such a big fan of IR. However, your recent posting of monochrome IR is most appealing. Strong image composition, beautiful tonal renderings. I particularly like ##2, 3, 4 and 5.
TFS.

I like the Saturday morning shot a lot Michael.
The seond is a bit more 'traditional' with the white leafs and dark sky, but that first one is outstanding with the light and contrasts in an interesting compo.

These four images show the former FIAT Lingotto car plant in Torino, Italy. On the roof of this huge building one finds a race track - also used for testing the cars. On the roof has also been built the Lingotto gallery which houses the (rather small) art collection of the Agnelli family. The building today has many uses - among them a hotel and a shopping mall.
You will find two more images of this building https://www.dyxum.com/dforum/cities-torino-italy_topic105254_post1625107.html#1625107 - in this post.

Ombre, now this is a very unusual infrared result, not really something I would expect when using a modified camera + IR filter

Did you apply some special post-processing, e.g. colouration? Curious about your process to achieve such IR image
Did you use a standard ILCE-7M2 or a modified model? If the latter, full spectrum or dedicated conversion and what is the cut off point of the IR filter used here then?

No problem to showcase false IR film simulations in here, but the result shown isn't really IR like due to all the green tones still available in the image which is not expected.

But if you want to emulate such an false IR look then instead of using a camera profile (on an unmodified camera) you have to tweak the colour tones via channel mixer and hue/saturation, respectively use Lightroom filter presets instead. There's even an "Infrared" develop preset under "Lightroom B&W Filter Presets" supplied in LR by default.
Normally the IR camera profile only is useful for real modified cameras (with IR filter) where the WB can be below the lower 2000K limit of ACR/LR. And with such profile it is possible to bring the WB slider of such RAW files into the given WB range of ACR/LR again.

Here are some links on false IR creation of a standard camera image via post-processing, which came up after a quick search:

Not sure I like the false colours here Fred; either really make it a b&w or remove the magenta/purple colour.

Taken with a full spectrum modified A7ii, using a variable ND filter instead of a proper IR filter (I'd left them behind) Transmission properties of the two are reasonably similar the ND becoming effectively an 850nm filter according to the spectrometer at work. :)

Thanks Brian, I have to admit that a lot of my IR shots are less successful but I keep most of them to myself.

I'd been looking for another e-mount forum since my A7ii is now my most used camera & talk-e mount didn't have enough traffic to keep me amused during lockdown evenings. Looks like Dyxum has hit the spot.:)

Your windmill shot does look a lot better in the B&W version, did you do some extra processing as the levels & even sharpness look to be improved. Turning a reasonable scene into a very pleasant one.

Your third shot definitely reminds me of Kinderdijk but no doubt there are quite a few other spots in the Nederlands that can manage 3 mills together, even if i'm not familiar with them.

Posted By: Fred_S
Date Posted: 23 December 2020 at 11:02
Thanks Mike, I pushed a few sliders to get a more punch in the BW version which came out pretty flat initially.

Good to have another IR shooter on board. Like Brian said, the drama in your shot is great.

Indeed Kinderdijk is probably the most famous together with the Zaanse Schans, but fortunately I have some nearby, although it was the first time I went there for a walk and shooting.

Only one windmill close to me & it's nowhere near as nice as any of yours.
I used to visit the southern part of the Nederlands quite a bit as my Dad kept his boat on the Grevelingmeer for many years. But I've not been north of Amsterdam since I was 5 & never made it to Millingen ann de Rijn where his family originated.

I'm often surprised how many IR shooters there are around. Most years when our club exhibits theres at least one person who mentions they shot IR with film in the past - Something I've no plans to try.

NEX5-N + 18-55mm OSS + 720nm

I was struggling to get nice 'false colours' (typical for 720nm) so decided to go for BW.
Is that my lack of knowledge/experience, does that have to do with the overcast situation, or is it just the colour scheme in the original situation?

Fred - I'm pretty sure that the IR glow of foliage is a "spring/summer thing". So those days with the fresh bright green new growth. The greens reflect the most IR at that time. The tall water foliage is probably sandy/brown color in real life, so not a high contrast thing. The hedges next to the barn and the grass being the brightest parts.

In traditional B&W photography (not IR) you'd need a green filter to make this shot - which would have then resulted in very little hint of 'blue' sky. You've got more sky/cloud contrast than you'd get with a green filter on film. So, if this wasn't IR (and doesn't look 'very' IR) then you'd have to look hard to think how to make the contrast that you've achieved in clouds and also light grass. I'd guess only former mono film shooters would notice this though.
