First of all, thank you to all the people involved.

I don't think it's a "rumor" forever, so I made it a new topic.
If you are new to this, see also the topic https://www.dyxum.com/dforum/rumor-laea4r-monster-adapter-being-developed_topic138050.html - "Rumor: LA-EA4r Monster Adapter being developed?" .

I have confirmed the operation of two of the newly supported lenses.
Minolta AF 100mm F2.8 Soft Focus
Minolta AF 135mm F2.8

Has the same lens ID as an unsupported but supported lens
SIGMA 8mm / F4 Fisy Eye(same LensID as Minolta/Sony AF 16mm F2.8 Fisheye)
Worked.

Officially unsupported Easter eggs,
The AF200 / F4G macro is practical for the ILCE-9. With the ILCE-7RM4, it never focused in the macro range and was not practical at all.

LA-EA4r, there is a note that the camera must be turned off before changing the lens, but I change a lens with the power on, 7RIV will black out and there will be no response. Even if I removed the battery and left it for a while, it didn't work and I recovered with a USB connection. Observe the notes.

The manual was revised with v02.

Since I didn't save the previous manual, the changes are not clear, but 7SIII (slow) and 7C have already been added to the compatible models.

Suddenly, I tried 7RIV + 1.4xTC + 200 / 4G MACRO. When the focus range limiter is turned on with this combination, it sometimes focuses. It's strange.
Unfortunately I don't have any other AF lens that can use TC.
Today is a holiday in Japan and I go for a long afternoon walk so I will check the details such as what happens to exif after returning.

It seems that non-supported lenses are still unsupported even with TC attached ?? However, the aperture is correct.
Turning on the range limiter, regardless of TC, seems to make it easier to focus, slightly.

So far, I have no intention of pursuing this matter any further.

About power consumption.
Attach LA-EA4r + AF135 / 2.8 to 7RIV.

2020: 09: 19 12:39:28 Battery Level: 98, turn off the power.
2020: 09: 21 13:15:34 Battery Level: 66, Power on.

It may be better to remove it when not in use.
Especially cameras that use the FW-50 battery.

The LA-EA4 has three motors. For focus, aperture, and AF / MF switching clutch for DMF. I feel that the EA4r lacks consideration for this clutch drive motor.

Power consumption

I too have noted this is now a major problem with the recent update. A battery at 100% when you switch off the camera with a lens attached to the la-ea4r can be down to 30% when you switch it on seeking to use it. I have reached out to Gurur and am waiting for a response.

Regards

Charles

Oh wow, that's good to know. I'd been planning on leaving the adapter attached and just swapping lenses as needed, basically pretending it's a somewhat limited A-mount camera. But not if it consumes power like that!

It also means I have to take the adapter and lens off every time it goes back into the bag, which isn't ideal at all.

This was the response from the developer

"Hi
Yes, some users reported this. And I am looking at it, it’s pretty hard to observe this. But I am trying. Sorry for the inconvenience."

On the official page,

https://m.weibo.cn/u/7436512006 - https://m.weibo.cn/u/7436512006

it was written that "After the release of the LA-EA4r v02 firmware, we started supporting the teleconverter. (At v03)".

The E-Mount camera supported by the EA4r exceeds the AF limit of F6.3 of the A-Mount .

For example, ILCE-9 has the advantage that the limit of PDAF is F16, and contrast AF can be performed even if it is darker than that.

The EA5 does not support TC, so it may be interesting.

Since EA4r does not support SSM, this is the only list of AF lenses that support genuine TC. 80-200 was not compatible with genuine TC.

Minolta AF 200/2.8 (HS) APO G
Minolta AF 200/4 Macro APO G - MF w/TC.
Minolta AF 300/2.8 (HS) APO G
Minolta AF 300/4 HS-APO G
Minolta AF 400/4.5 HS-APO G
Minolta AF 600/4 (HS) APO G

Of these, only 200/2.8 and 300/4 are supported by v02.
200/F4G, Easter egg with v02, but not practical with ILCE-7RM4.
ILCE-9 can be used with AF somehow.

Driven by curiosity, I suddenly decided to attach an unsupported SSM lens, SAL50/1.4ZA, to the LA-EA4r. Of course it became MF, but I thought it might not be usable at all.
No, I can't set the aperture to F1.4 because the lens parameters are messed up.

This is getting more tempting to get than an LA-EA5 .
It also means I could get the a7iii that I had planned on just as the LA-EA5 was announced ( and not compatible with most cameras ) .

With the new additions and functions it just gets better .

Certainly is becoming more interesting.
Might be time for someone to check whether lenses not on the supported list, but which record the same exif tags as those that are, will work as well.

https://exiftool.org/TagNames/Sony.html#LensType%20and%20at%20http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/TagNames/Sony.html#LensType2 - Sony Lens Type Values (exif tags) are here (scroll down.

eg Minolta 24-105 (exif tag 24) is now supported. Other lenses with tag 24 include:
24.1     = Sigma 18-50mm F2.8
24.2     = Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC Macro
24.3     = Sigma 20-40mm F2.8 EX DG Aspherical IF
24.4     = Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC
24.5     = Sigma DC 18-125mm F4-5,6 D
24.6     = Tamron SP AF 28-75mm F2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical [IF] Macro
24.7     = Sigma 15-30mm F3.5-4.5 EX DG Aspherical

Minolta 75-300, exif taq 2561, others with same tag:
2561.1     = Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DL Macro
2561.2     = Sigma 300mm F4 APO Macro
2561.3     = Sigma AF 500mm F4.5 APO
2561.4     = Sigma AF 170-500mm F5-6.3 APO Aspherical
2561.5     = Tokina AT-X AF 300mm F4
2561.6     = Tokina AT-X AF 400mm F5.6 SD
2561.7     = Tokina AF 730 II 75-300mm F4.5-5.6
2561.8     = Sigma 800mm F5.6 APO
2561.9     = Sigma AF 400mm F5.6 APO Macro
2561.10     = Sigma 1000mm F8 APO

I don't yet have an e-mount camera (or adapter) to check, but maybe somebody has.

The test was done with ILCE-9 v6.00 and all lenses were in focus.

The parameters of the SIGMA 8mm / F4.0 Fysheye are recognized correctly.

If you replace the lens without turning off the power, the parameters will not be updated.

I see Dyxum is influencing the LA-EA4r development - the latest aim is to ensure all Minolta zooms with a Dyxum rating of 4 or more will work with the adapter (though I assume this will not include xi lenses).

If you change the lens without turning off the power and the camera hangs, you can recover by connecting the USB power supply.

Lenses no longer working in V04 (AF working in V03):
28-80 D
28-105/3.5-4.5 RS
Tamron 90/2.5 (52EM)
Cosina 100/3.5

I notice the lens names with these are not getting reset. The 28-80 D and 28-105 will sort of work on the wide end if they are mounted right after the 24-85. The aperture often shows up as "F90" with these and cannot be changed. The 24-85 also had this happen.

Lens Compensation is working with the SAL28F28. It is not working with the Minolta AF 100mm F2.8 D Macro or SAL50F14.

Lens Type for the Minolta 50/1.7 RS is also set correctly

Focus Distance not working with D lenses.

WARNING!

A small number of people are posting on the Official MonsterAdapter LA-EA4r Group, for A-mount that their cameras have "bricked" when using the adapter.
There is one report that the main board in the camera had to be replaced. The malfunctions appear to occur when the lens was removed without turning off the camera. It may be advisable to:

A known issue that has been talked about several times in this forum. It can be recovered by connecting a USB power supply.
Don't forget the USB power supply and cable when you go out.

The following is just a guess.
For some reason, the battery protection works and the battery becomes a brick. External power is required for resetting.

Every time I update it, I change the lens and test it. It hangs up for a while. Accustomed.

The battery issue is discussed in the Monster Adapter forum, and that does arise in some cases. However in a small number of cases the actual camera main board has been affected. And required replacement. The WARNING is clear:

ENSURE THE CAMERA IS TURNED OFF WHEN REPLACING A LENS!

It's hard to say a warning because it's easy to say and almost impossible to comply with. I want to narrow down the conditions a little more.
However, it is difficult to test that the board may break.
Can you give me a link to the original article?

Thank you for the link.
My understanding is as follows.
7II is having problems and is troubleshooting.
Respond to firmware updater.(w/ external power)
Replacing with another battery, which is the definitive solution, has not been done.

It seems that the board was replaced at 6400, but the details are unknown.

I guess it's a guess, but the protection circuit of the FW-50 battery is unrecoverable like a fusible link, and the Z battery may be made of a recoverable element like PolySwitch. ??

Official Notification on Monster Adapter Facebook page:

Turn off the camera before changing lenses. Especially with A7ii.

Warning about the use of the LA-EA4r!!!
As many of you have noticed Don Williams' post about how his a7II has bricked, please go through it to the end where the experiences and thoughts exchanged should be very useful for you to prevent the same from happening to you. Here is the post link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/572060616797245/permalink/687146661955306/ - https://www.facebook.com/groups/572060616797245/permalink/687146661955306/
First of all we'd like to thank Don and other members for the sharing in the post and we think it's extremely necessary to remind all our users again that the instructions mentioned on the package of our board as well as the Sony's for the original LA-EA4 must be remembered and followed, and the most important one, as Don has concluded in the end, is NEVER to attach/detach the lens/adapter when the camera is still ON. Moreover, try your best to only use the officially supported lenses and the Minolta/Sony native lenses with your MonsterAdapter LA-EA4r because they have been physically tested as safe to use.
We don't want to see any more cameras bricked for totally avoidable reasons so please pay attention to this warning and enjoy your shooting without pains.

Can anyone comment on the relative AF capabilities with this, versus before modification?
I ask because my impression of using the A7Rii is that on-sensor PDAF works very well for small focus errors, but for large focus errors - especially on long telephoto lenses - it loses PDAF more quickly than the A-mount PDAF setup, choosing a direction more or less randomly. This could be because the A-mount's larger mechanical assembly detects the correct way to go even with fairly large focus errors (macro excepted).

My experience has been positive. With my 200mm f2.8G AF speed is about the same as when I used the original LA-EA4. The bonus is that I have far more AF points to choose from. In low light, I think the AF speed and accuracy is about the same as before.

The A7RII phase-detection is pretty weak. Mine was just struggling with a 70-300 F4-5.6. The old 15-point sensor in the LA-EA4 works in much more challenging conditions.

Anyone have a working link to the V03 firmware?

I would like to use the Tamron 90mm F2.5 with the LA-EA4r. It worked fine with V03 and doesn't work with V04.

I don't know a valid link, but I have a v03 binary.
I don't have LA-EA4r anymore so I can't confirm, but is it possible to downgrade Firmware?
Isn't it better to ask the author to support it with v05?

Gary Friedman has sent out a final email to those interested in his work on the Monster adapter.

"Hi there! Gary Friedman here again.

This will be my final post about the monster adapter. I finally had time to create a youtube video with low production values, showing the differences between the Sony LA-EA5 and the Monster Adapter with Firmware v4. You can see it here:

https://youtu.be/Xy4GZURBkF0 - https://youtu.be/Xy4GZURBkF0

The Monster adapter is much more reliable than in the past, and now even supports some 3rd party lenses. Below is a summary of the differences between these two adapters:"

Regretfully, I have not been able to correctly format Gary's table and include it here.

"So will I be taking this project on? Regretfully no, as I simply do not have the time. I’ll be moving again shortly and we plan on spending many months on the road in the coming years, making mail-order modifications a difficult thing to do.

You can purchase the board here https://www.ebay.com/itm/MonsterAdapter-LA-EA4r-Upgrade-kit/224267929385?hash=item3437690729:g:19EAAOSwjPtfQmT8 , and don’t forget my video showing my first attempt at the microsurgery is here: https://youtu.be/9a-NuV3fW4E

That’s it for now. Thanks for your interest and enthusiasm for this project (and for your patience for promised updates!)

Sincerely, Gary
"

Interesting video.

My take aways.
I think the LA-EA5 is quicker (if your camera supports it )
The LA-EA4r is useable.
I would not like the step AF character of the LA-EA4r. In fact, it is the way the A7r2 handles adapted SSM/SAM lenses and I do not like it. The A7r4 is much, much better with the LA-EA1/3 then the A7r2.

I see four reasons to get the LA-EA4r:
1) you like the fact that a third party made it (or you hate Sony limitations)
2) you like to tinker
3) you want to save some money
4) you want to use the outer focus area with the 500mm mirror
Did I miss anything?

Interesting that the modified LA-EA4 focuses on the Alpha 1 because a stock LA-EA4 is limited to manual focus on that body.

Sony allows the 500mm F8 to use slightly more than the center AF points on the LA-EA5. I wonder what criteria they used to choose that area?

Come to think of it - I missed something: if you do not own an A7r4, A1 or A6600 it might be the best option in town.

I guess the reliability of AF decreases when you move out with the 500mm. The Sony DSLT's and Sony/Minolta (D)SLR did the same. I guess their is a range in the centre that is considered good enough. That area might be known from the time the lens was designed and they just used the setting that is closest to that.

This is true with any lens. Sony's limitation of many APS-C lenses to only 61 points of the 79 point discrete sensor also feels rather arbitrary. Why only just that amount?

The frame coverage of the on-sensor phase-detect keeps increasing. I assume extra processing/data is needed off-axis phase-detect.

I ordered a 2nd-hand LA-EA4 + the monster electronics board.

We want all our remaining lenses to work on all my A7's (RII & III).

I'll have to wait a few weeks for the board to arrive - if we're lucky we can use this lens on a future Benelux-Dyxum-meeting.

And yes - we understand that the camera needs to be switches off when changing lenses with the LA-EA4r (i once ruined a 24mm chip on a minolta lens by not powering the camera down - so this is something we won't forget).

My LA-EA4R arrived yesterday - and this morning i started the "surgery" on the LA-EA4 adapter i bought. Without the video from Mr. Friedman (links on this forum) - it'd have been a little bit more difficult.

This proves the high value of Mr. Friedman and this forum!

You need to be handy with these small cables - it took me about 20' the work done.

And i took a plastic box for sorting screws/nails - to put al small screws and parts inside. So we couldn't switch them.

We tried it on our A7RII (the cheapest to replace- of all my a7's) - and it works fine with my Minolta 50mm f1.7.

One issue still needs to be solved though - how am i going to pimp/paint the adapter - because i want to be able to recognize it. Maybe a few Red R's on all sides?

Idea's are welcome.

Now we'll start soon the tests with all our screw-driven-Minolta-lenses (and we'll switch of the camera while changing lenses! I ruined my 24mm chip on a K-M 24mm f2.8 once and it'll never happen again!).

New firmware v06 with "G Driver"; I finally think it is safe, so I ordered the EA4r board yesterday.

On their website there is a news blog update which seems to indicate it is (probably) correct that even if I accidentally don't power off the camera:

1 using a Z100 battery means the camera and lens are (probably) safe, the battery circuit breaker will trip but save the camera and lens

2 using Minolta lenses with 5 contacts (probably) will not short the camera

The safest way is to drop the battery, or remove the EA4r from the camera ... then swap the lens.

I still have a a7ii, which was the original source of the "shorted camera main board" problem, although minolta_mutley says the lens chip shorted (5 contact lens??).

source: https://www.monsteradapter.com/blogs/%E6%96%B0%E9%97%BB/la-ea4r-important-notice-do-not-hot-swap-a-mount-lenses-while-camera-still-on - https://www.monsteradapter.com/blogs/%E6%96%B0%E9%97%BB/la-ea4r-important-notice-do-not-hot-swap-a-mount-lenses-while-camera-still-on

Note I believe it is still true that the EA4r does not drive SSM/SAM lenses, whereas the EA5 does, except for a couple lenses noted on the EA5 thread https://www.dyxum.com/dforum/sony-laea5-adapter-250-october_topic138554_page26.html - https://www.dyxum.com/dforum/sony-laea5-adapter-250-october_topic138554_page26.html

I used a silver and gold sharpie marker to put the number of the adapter on it, so the EA2 has a big "2" on the sides, etc. I'll add the "r" after I swap the board.
