Well, if you hike/do a nature walk with a long lens like the 70-350G birds are a nice subject
Yeah, I know, but then they get into 1:1 territory and the A6400 has AA filter - these are about 1:2 crops.

I think what I prefer about the last one is the wing is stretched erect, whereas #1 is more mid-stroke. The stretched wing gives a sense of power to the flight that's missing in #1. I mean, they're both good shots and ones I'd have loved to have taken either. Anyway, that's why I have a slight preference to the last.

One question regarding these swallow pictures: from what sort of position you aim towards these birds? Given the water background, I would guess downwards angle. In certain way, I'm not sure if that is the most optimal and lower shooting angle would be preferable.

Yes they are mostly shot at a downward angle. I stand on a short jetty and the swallows nest/rest underneath it. I would much rather get down to the water level but can't because of thick reed cover, the areas that are reed free somehow don't appeal to the swallows.

Yeah, the big difference here is the twist of the head. The head is now shaded and you don't have the catchlight in the eye. It does look like you have had an enchanting time, watching and photographing these birds.

Of course, I think α99 II's AF may not offer the best possible tracking capabilities (for that you need a recent E mount camera). But apart from the overlapping of the top group in the first picture and bit dull grayish sky you did pretty well.

(Not easy to capture, these were my best attempts. Cropped and sharpened) | What was the hard part? Keeping track of the birds? Or subjects being too far away (since you cropped)? Of course, I think α99 II's AF may not offer the best possible tracking capabilities (for that you need a recent E mount camera). But apart from the overlapping of the top group in the first picture and bit dull grayish sky you did pretty well.
| Thanks Heikki! The hard part was that the flew towards me, against a tree filled background. That made it hard to get them in focus timely and capture them passing by at closer distance. Especially if you start with the focus set at mid instead of wide . I should try it more often!

Grey heron. | Nope, not a grey heron (Ardea cinerea), although this wrong identification is apperently quite common, this is white-faced heron (Egretta novaehollandiae) since grey herons do not live in Australia.
Here is a grey heron in flight to compare:

Thanks Heikki, obvious I suppose when you look at it. Always good to learn, to me they've always been either grey or white until again someone corrected me in that my 'white' herons were in fact egrets....

Can highly recommend "The Australian Bird Guide" from CSIRO, it's currently the best there is for Australian birds. Just don't buy it from the CSIRO website as it's overpriced like crazy. I'm "guilty" of over the last few years having added all 4 main guides to our local birds.
