I presume these are mainly cargo flights nowadays, in fact the cabin of that A330 (OH-LTT) has been converted for cargo use by removing almost all seats. And still one year ago, this afternoon wave from Asia was at least twice as big. And then the intra-European routes have seen more drastic reduction, if there earlier was often at least two daily rotations on most routes, now it is nice if there is even one return flight a day and at least in case of Finnair, the planes on European routes have been changed to smaller ones.

Today afternoon I heard that airplanes heading towards Helsinki Airport are flying past my home, so I couldn't resist the temptation to photograph planes from my window despite somewhat grey skies and light snowing...

1. OH-LKF (Finnair/NoRRA Embraer E190LR) on AY1764 from Rome

That https://pimaair.org/museum-aircraft/north-american-f-86e/ - F-86E Sabre was in the skies over Korea from December 1951 until August 1953. But that https://pimaair.org/museum-aircraft/north-american-f-86e/ - MIG 15 "Fagot" was build in Poland under licence and never went to Korea (despite its Korean colours).

The Pima museum has an https://pimaair.org/exhibits-and-aircraft/museum-aircraft/ - impressive collection of (mainly) post-war planes I must say. They even have an https://pimaair.org/museum-aircraft/fokker-c-31a/ - Fokker C-31a Troopship

Here is a Fokker build (assembled) Gloster Meteor at the National Military Museum, Soesterberg:

Wow addy! thats impressive. Usually I can tell the difference between a Mig and a Sabre but where they flew and the years is way beyond me. I do know that Mig and Sabre air battles over Korea are iconic of the Korean War. I've seen enough movies

Pima Air & Space Museum, your right, is a very impressive museum, possibly the finest NGO military-plus, aircraft museum in America. I made a special trip to Tucson to visit in 2019. Here is my 155 photo album of it, with only 1 of 4 existing B36 "Peacemaker" nuclear bombers and a very rare B58 "Hustler". Included is my "Boneyard" bus tour

That is an iconic also, Meteor. Very nice, I'm a sucker for nose shots, planes and trains

It's a USAF HC-130J Hercules . Introduced in 2010 so not crazily old. The original Hercules design is old, from the 1950s though. (edited after further research)

Old but still useful and used. I remember them In the Viet Nam war. A more proper name for it was "Gun Ship". Also known as "Spooky" and countless other names depending where you were stationed

They would get the biggest howitzer they could find, stick it out the side window fill the plane up w gun shells, hover over a target at night "mostly," hence the name Spooky and pound it mercilessly
If I was on the ground this is about the last thing I would want to see flying above me

It was built as a short take off and landing cargo plane. A very successful design.

If I was on the ground, lost and the HC-130 above me, I would like it, as it is a search and rescue version of the C-130.

The gunship is the AC-130 version. That is a nasty one, indeed.

It is a common military transport plane and the backbone of the transport wing of many airforces. There are several versions, besides SAR and gunship also AWAC, Electronic warfare and tanker versions. A versatile aircraft.

And mind you they are not that dang comfortable to be ferried in to say the least! Did 4 4hr flights in the back of an old C-130H in the mid 90's and they are loud (earpro needed), cold, cramped (mixed pax and cargo load) and the toilet facilities leaves lots to be wanted (think pee tube and a portaloo with no privacy)

Well, it is intended to move troops around, not demanding customers. You would have liked the VC-130H more I think - the VIP C-130!

It will also be better then this low cost plane I expect:

And no telling how much longer the Taipan's will keep on flying down here as Australia is looking to phase them out and buy new Blackhawks and Seahawks.

And they are even serious. Maybe do not fly into an active warzone with civilian aircraft?

There are a lot of legal problems - even if they could get FAA approval, those planes probably won't be allowed into European airspace, let alone higher risk airspaces like Russia or Iran.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Recently there has been couple days when strong winds have been such that incoming traffic to Helsinki Airport in Vantaa has used runway 15 for landings and that fairly rare configuration means that the planes fly over my neighbourhood already quite low...

This is a different kind of aircraft then we usually find in this thread. On March 5, 1945, the Lancaster NN775 crashed into a swampy meadow in Bunsbeek, Belgium. The aircraft was on its way back from Gelsenkirchen, where it was carrying out an attack on a benzene refinery, when it was hit by German anti-aircraft fire. It crashed and disappeared meters underground. The seven occupants were killed. The device was only excavated in 2016.

It is an exhibition in the Overloon War Museum and I lifted the text https://www.oorlogsmuseum.nl/en/the-museum/exhibitions/lancaster-unique-in-the-world/ - from their website . It is a translation of the text in Dutch and in Dutch "inzittenden" is fine. Same with describing the plane as a device - in Dutch it is "toestel", a common term to describe an aircraft - I think machine would have been a better translation.

I googled for the reason why they exhumed the aircraft, but I did not find a clear one. Aircraft archaeologists started the investigation. What I do know is that in the 1940's they already exhumed the bodies of four of the seven crewmen. They now found the remains of the three other airmen. Reading https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/northern-ireland/northern-irish-pilots-remains-found-71-years-after-bomber-downed-over-belgium-35212330.html - this article in the Belfast Telegraph it seems they did not know in the 1940's who of the crew they exhumed. in the end they have a shared grave, like they had a shared plane.

Norman Kerr, pilot, Northern Ireland (23 years)
Sidney Smith, navigator, United Kingdom (21 years)
William Marsden, Lancashire, United Kingdom (20 years)
Frank Clarke, bombardier, Warwickshire, United Kingdom (21 years)
William Olsen, wireless operator, Toowoomba, Australia (21 years)
Herbert Thomas, tailgunner, Clarendon, Jamaica (23 years)
Christopher Hogg, upper fuselage turret gunner, South Yardley, Birmingham, United Kingdom (20 years)

Edit: I copied the list of airmen from a source that made a mistake, Norman Kerr was from Northern Ireland, not Northern Island.

According to the Wikipedia page of Alan Dulles:
"His older brother, John Foster Dulles, was the Secretary of State during the Eisenhower Administration and is the namesake of Dulles International Airport."

I think the town of Dulles is named after the airport, as the wikipedia page for the town mentions:
"The usage of Dulles as a community name began in the mid-1980s when Loudoun County economic development officer Pam Treadwell successfully lobbied[1] the United States Postal Service to allow Sterling businesses and residents to use Dulles as an alternative address."

Dulles airport is named Dulles since 1962 and the town is called Dulles since the 1980's. I think both the city and the airport are named after the Dulles brothers.

Interestingly B52's (BUFF), commissioned in 1952, will still be flying Air Force missions long after Lancers will be gone. They have recently been refitted w new Rolls Royce engines...

Your right there's almost no doubt B52's will have been flying missions for the US Air Force continuously for over a century

Back many, many years ago we had a saying "The last pilot to fly BUFF hasn't been born Yet"
Although I don't think any of us expected a Century...Holy Cow!

Obviously, reliability, servicing and and flying cost per hour play a very important role - and here the B52 shines! Just look at the fate of the F-22 Raptor!

I think people now much more appreciate everything that is related to security and defense. Times definitely have changed.

And you were not the only photographer to grab that lunch!

All the best, Josef!

Operation Chrome Dome was a United States Air Force Cold War-era mission from 1960 to 1968 in which B-52 strategic bomber aircraft armed with thermonuclear weapons remained on continuous airborne alert and flew routes to points on the Soviet Union's border.

In 1957 the USAF demonstrated the bomber's reach by having three B-52s fly non-stop around the world.
(We can hit you anywhere)

There's more than serviceability. Buff and the men who flew them saved our ass from the Soviets during the Cold War. IMHO it was America's greatest single deterrent. I have always known it as the "Cold War Warrior"
Josef

ps; there is an excellent movie "Gathering of Eagles" starring Rock Hudson
