OK I'll start this one with yet more swallows who are still busy nest building.

Thanks Charles, I found a new vantage spot yesterday although somewhat at risk of falling in, but at least it gets rid of the horrible brown water above I'll post more later. It's 7.30 AM with clear skies at the moment so I'm just about to leave although cold change expected later, so 'early bird catches....' and all that.

I have a feeling that your Australian cold change is still reasonably warm compared to weather here in Helsinki, where forecast for Saturday-Sunday night predicts below freezing temperatures...

Too right Heikki, I think it was 9C.
I was interested to see this swallow take a piece of straw out into the lake and wet it before returning to then coat it in mud. Distant shot heavy crop. Then several shots just to show the incredible AF of this camera taken through the reeds without losing focus.

Thanks Robert. They're virtually my only game in town at the moment apart from lumbering ducks, darters and the like so if people aren't too sick of them there will be more to come. On the plus side our COVID travel restrictions are due to be eased next weekend so maybe a chance for a change of scenery.....

Today I got caught with some weird gear. Sony A6400 with Sony 70-200 / 2.8 (A-mount). There were supposed to be birds in the shade. But instead, a red-tailed hawk appeared that was clearly looking for prey.

Great shot of the Osprey Robert and Mariusz I like the Red Tailed Hawk, the above shot certainly lives up to its name.

Coming in for a drink, absolutely perfect water conditions, but a bad direction light wise making them somewhat dark. I used my 1.4 TC for the first time on the A1, still sharp at 560mm.

Last year I spent a whole morning in the Ooypolder near Nijmegen to observe Black terns that were nesting on small artificial islands. I could only get one in the frame when they were hovering above the water to look for something to eat. It was very difficult to follow them when they came flying by in full speed. The RX10 mark4 (borrowed it from my wife) did a pretty good job, fast and accurate AF and easy to handle.

And yes, the camera used is mine, I did trade two A-mount cameras and nine lenses and few accessories plus significant chunk of savings for this beast that can take way too many frames without noticing if you use silent mode...

Welcome to the club Heikki, as Robert says the sting will soon be forgotten and you'll be surprised how much easier those difficult shots are. I'm still in awe every time I go out and the editing is so much easier too. When I saw your 'porn' post I was scrolling up from the bottom seeing the 50mm f1.2 and the 600mm two lenses I would love to try and thinking who is this, he really must be loaded. You then spoilt it for me by not claiming ownership

Those lenses (and cameras) I posted to the camera gear porn thread were Sony demo units and there was just one Sony FE 4/600 GM OSS lens, although I posted two pics of it. So no one person owned that gear, which was on display (and for testing) at the Sony stand at Finnish Nature Photograph of the Year event. And there I got the final inspiration to get this new camera, although maybe there I couldn't yet properly get proper hands on experienment since it was indoors and there was no birds (or other wildlife) to photograph.

I certainly do not regret getting α1, only I regret a bit selling the trade-ins rather cheaply (maybe I should have tried to sell them myself, but then it might have taken little longer to sell them).

Sure. I was shooting these last week in Germany (Diepholz area) where the Cranes gather, feed, and rest during their long flight to the south of France, where they spend the winter.

The Eagle nest and snag I normally monitor for Audubon was destroyed by a storm over the summer. The pair are back but I have not found if or where they are rebuilding. The Eagles below are another pair that have readied last year's nest and should be incubating eggs soon.

Wang TH, nice catch! Although, I have to admit that somehow I'm bothered by the framing: the empty space on the right side is somewhat distracting. I wonder if some cropping could cure this...

Thx Fred
i6400 was necessary to get 1/2000sec shutter time.
However, the new denoise software is really doing a great job.

Thx Bob, it would be reason enough to (learn to) fly

It was a Sunday well spent shooting large birds of prey (in drizzaling weather).
I'll come up with some more shots later

Thanks, Peter
Never underestimate the effect of a well-shot black Cockatoo

Here I have a Red Kite, that I shot against a pure white sky (heavy overcast and a bit of rain). I had to replace the white sky with a grey one

And very effectively done too Domien. I'm generally too lazy or too busy to spend much time with my edits although my now go to software ON1RAW will do a sky replacement quite easily. Maybe I'll experiment with the above....

Wow, impressive shot.
Indeed the grey cloudy sky gives it something sinister.

Domien, amazing shots, must have been another excersise in patience.
That red kite is quite rare around here. I spotted one this spring but it just flew by, and gone.
Did this one have a territory?

Thanks, Peter Hans Dirk.
The Red Kite is very common in the Eiffel area in Germany (just across the border of Limburg).
You see there as many as you see Buzzards here.

The Sony a6400 only has an animal eye focus which does not work with birds in flight. But honestly, I didn't even try it. I have a camera set on a human eye;)
