OK, at Leo's suggestion we now have a plan for a third Bennelux Dyxum meeting this year on saturday november 13 in the Antwerp Zoo to try our lenses (and zoom ends) greater or equal than 300 mm. (other lenses welcome as well )

In case of bad weather (the current forecast looks splendid) we can move to the 14th or 28th.

Opening times of the zoo are 10:00 - 16:45. I suggest we meet around 11:00 in "Grand Cafe Flamingo" on the entrance square of the zoo. For people who want to arrive later no problem, the park is relatively small and new arrivals can give us a call (or SMS / WhatsApp) so we can direct them to the right place. We only need to exchange phone numbers by PM to do that.

You can buy your tickets beforehand via internet or at the zoo itself, cost is 31 € for adults and 29 € for people over 60. https://www.zooantwerpen.be/nl/info-tickets/ - Antwerp Zoo Website - Info/Tickets

Outside in the park there are currently no Corona restrictions, inside buildings they request to wear mouth-masks and for the eateries you need a valid COVID QR code

After visiting the Zoo there's also the suggestion to visit the Antwerp Central Railway station, which is next door to the zoo and a splendid railway cathedral. We're too late to ask for an official photo permit there (you need to request that 6 weeks beforehand) but I'll still send them an email to see what's possible. I've often walked around alone and taken pictures without a permit but always handheld, probably using a tripod without official permission is asking for trouble.

Wow, that is quite expensive - Dutch Zoo's are around €25,- But I noticed it is the going rate in Belgium.

I liked my first DM, so, put me on the list.

I feel the participation/energy a bit waning. If others think a small meeting so quickly after Dordrecht combined with a much longer trip is too much that's very understandable. Or it might be we're trying to organise this with too little lead time.

For me it's no problem, only a 25 minute tramride and I have a subscription with free entry to the Antwerp Zoo so I might go anyway even if we're only two or three (or even if I'm alone).

Let me know what you think.

I think the lead time is too short: me and my partner are quite regularly planning various trips in the weekends, so a longer time in advance would be nice.

That's great Fred (and Domien). I guess we're still on then

Maybe I overreacted a bit to some of the cancellations, but I agree with Harm that normally we should take more lead time to agree the best date and set up the meeting.

Last but not least: there's room for plenty more

I'll still be there - even if you move the visit to a later date.

For the free tickets - they are valid until 5/4/2022.

For me it's a good thing there can be a meeting. I've been at photographical meetings with only four (due to the bad weather - and we had tons of fun!).

I've been in Planckendael - there's a lot of renovation-work going on (the tropical glassbuilding is being renovated - so it may be better to visit the historical Antwerp Zoo instead).

There's only a few issues - what lens do we take? The Sony 300f2.8 - the 600 f4 or the Sigma 150-500? And do we use the A77II/A7r2/a7III - and with what kind of converter - the LA-EA3/4/5/4r ?

I'm more leaning into the sigma or the 300 (with 1.4x converter).

Let the voting start

Posted By: pegelli
Date Posted: 08 November 2021 at 19:01
Good stuff Ivo

I'm taking my Sony FE 70-300 and an old Osawa 400/5.6 OM mount (my longest lenses).

I'd love to try out a 600/4 on one of my camera's (A7ii/A7Rii) so a LA-EA4 is mandatory for AF on those bodies. I can bring the LA-EA4 and I'm willing to carry the 600/4 for you the whole day if you bring it.

But I agree that being closer to the animals in a zoo environment a 300/2.8 with a 1.4x teleconverter makes more sense than the 600/4, so why not take both when you consider my offer above

I managed to reserve one of the free tickets that Ivo kindly offered, but happy to share the entrance fees between the participants (apart form Ivo with his subscription). We might get another discounbt via a (trusted) ticket auction site (selling per 2 tickets for around 50% of teh regular price).

From the Zoo it self it seems the tickets are a fixed price, but if you google it seems you can get 25% off easily.

What is the best place to park my car?

I am undecided on the lenses. I was thinking about the A99m2 with the Sony 70-400G - then I was thinking about the A6400 with the 70-350G - then I thought about the A7r4 with the Canon EF 200/2.8L and the Canon EOS R with the Canon EF 400/5.6L. Thought about the Canon 100-300L. Like I said, I am undecided. I will bring the Ricoh GR3 as it is small

The weather forecast has changed quite a bit and saturday looks quite rainy. Sunday is forecasted to be dry and partly sunny.

Let's not take any drastic decisions now, it's early and the forecast can still change over the coming days, but how does everybodies agenda look if we would move to sunday the 14th, is that even an option?

There's a paid Q-Park Antwerpen Astridplein which is next door to the Zoo.

Lower budget coming from the north I'd recommend P+R Metropolis (exit 1 "Merksem" with free parking on a large parking lot at a cinema and a Decathlon shop) and then take a bus or tram to the city center. The cheapest way to buy tram/bus tickets is https://www.delijn.be/nl/vervoerbewijzen/tickets/ - via this site , download the app and by 2 "M tickets"

EDIT: Other good option might be P+R Merksem (exit 5 "Kleine Bareel") and there you can take tram 2 or 3 direct to the Zoo/Central Station. However I've never used this P+R myself, so I don't know exactly what the parking arrangements are, but I think it's also a big free parking lot in front of a shopping center with a large supermarket and many other shops.

Excellent question, current weatherforecasts are not helping

Buienradar predicts dry tomorrow as of 9:00 and all day sunday
https://www.buienradar.nl/weer/antwerpen/be/2803138/5daagse - Buienradar Antwerpen 5-daagse

Meteovista predicts rain all saturday but dry sunday afternoon
https://www.meteovista.be/Europa/Belgie/Antwerpen/4053795/weersverwachting-48uur - Meteovista Antwerp 48 hours
https://www.meteovista.be/Europa/Belgie/Antwerpen/4053795/weersverwachting-14dagen - Meteovista Antwerp 14 days (click on sunday to see morning/afternoon/evening)

My general experience is that Buienradar is slightly optimistic in their forecasts while Meteovista is slightly pessimistic. But in this case that doesn't help much, both have not been nominated for the "weatherforecasters hall of fame"

So sunday seems a safer bet but I don't mind taking the risk for saturday. What do you all think?

Maybe we take another look mid-afternoon and see if anything changed significantly but I would like to take a final decision today so everybody knows when to come.

The predictions for saturday are clear - 100% rain - also on kmi.be - i put my bets on sunday.

It seems that the chanses are big that sunday will be the better day of both. I'm comming by train - that's by far the easiest way to reach the zoo for me.

Keep in mind that there are planned interventions on the line between Brussels and Mechelen - near Vilvoorde during that week-end (i'm taking a direct connection between Leuven and Antwerp - that doesn't cross that line, we go over Aarschot, Lier...). So use the online planner from the belgian railroads.

Posted By: pegelli
Date Posted: 12 November 2021 at 13:47
I think you're right Ivo, Both kmi.be as well as Meteovista still give rain until mid afternoon or longer. Also the general weather forecast on the radio confirms this.

Sunday looks much better (on all sites) so I suggest we move the meeting 24 hours later and meet each other on Sunday November 14 around 11:00 in "Grand Cafe Flamingo" on the entrance square of the zoo.

@ Addy, Fred, Domien and Ivo: Pls. post below that you have seen this post, I would like to avoid anyone showing up on saturday by himself.

I've seen the post - and i agree on sunday.

For the 2 tickets i have i'll send PM's with my Smartphone number - we'll try to use those, and as Fred proposed you can agree to split the advantage over the participants.

I have a year pass - so i can enter and leave as i like - to bring you the ticket.

For the corona-regulations:

See you next sunday (i plan to arrive around 9:36) - i can enter from 9:00 (one hour before normal visitors can).

Posted By: pegelli
Date Posted: 12 November 2021 at 15:25
I also have a year pass, but probably a different formula. I have free access (and so has my whole family) but didn't get free tickets I can give away to others. My only option is to buy cheap (5 €) "grandchildren tickets" but I think none of the participants qualify for that

See you sunday, don't know what time I'll arrive but certainly in time for our agreed meeting time at 11:00.

The site of the Belgian railways states:
Hou er wel rekening mee dat je voor alle film- en fotoreportages (ook voor studie- of privédoeleinden) een schriftelijke toelating nodig hebt. Gaat het om een foto of filmpje dat wordt gemaakt zonder professioneel materiaal (bv. vakantiefoto’s), dan heb je geen toelating nodig.

Not really clear. But if professional material is the defining characteristic, I will use my Canon EOS R - with just one memory card slot it cannot be professional

Yes, I sent an email asking permission for today (the 13th), but I never got a response. Their site says they will respond "within 6 weeks", so I guess I will need to wait another four weeks before knowing whether we would be allowed to take photo's there or not. But I think as long as we shoot handheld without a tripod we'll be OK.
