Should we aim for a meal on the night of 22/3 for those staying over?

Also, to confirm I am likely to be available when we do another meet (say in May).

A team meal would be good.

I have just booked an overnight stay on the 22nd too and if an evening team meal is on the cards, count me in.

So often on previous meets in the UK I have had to journey back before the evening and have not had the chance to socialise with Dyxum friends, so the evening before is a very good idea.

Quite tempted by the EasyHotel for the 22nd. I'm only 35mins away, but it would allow me more than the one pint, and an earlier start on the 23rd.

It would be great if you could join the evening meal Phil.

This is just two weeks away so I guess some organising for the day and night before should happen. As I am here in Oxford I can book things easily, if required.

For the evening meal on the Tuesday evening I can book a table for 6 for say 7:30pm. Half of us are staying in or near Summertown in N Oxford, so it appears to make sense to book there.

What kind of food appeals? There's everything from (upmarket) French, Tapas, Pizza, the Dewdrop Inn (with a 'pub classics' menu), and Chinese and Indian restaurants too.

For the walk on the Wednesday I'd expect we can choose a route nearer to the day, but be aware that not all colleges/University sites have free entry, and many are open in the afternoon only. It might make sense to visit some of the newer architecture in the Science Area and Radcliffe Observatory Quarter first and colleges and quadrangles in the afternoon. There's also the Covered Market, Christ Church Meadow, the Botanic Garden (£), and so on.

Are there any particular expectations? Do we all use WhatsApp? It might be a useful way to stay in touch.

Can't do this one - Work has got in the way (again...) and I can't move anything to accommodate. I wish you all a safe and enjoyable meet and will look longingly on at the images which will arise from this.

Take care and best regards, Neil.

I am staying in a B&B in New Marston about a mile or so from the city centre on the 22nd and 23rd and which looks to be some distance from Summertown. I suppose the exercise will do me good. I have no particular preference for dining as I eat most things (apart from squid!). I am happy to go with the flow on Wednesday as I have spent many a day wandering around Oxford and have seen quite a lot of it when my daughter lived in the area. That said, there are always new ways of looking at familiar locations so I really am happy to do whatever the group wishes. Martin

Good call Howard. Now that the A-mount party is all but over my thoughts are also turning to our planned meeting.

I believe I told you where I have booked to stay, is it walking distance to where you suggest we socialise the night before? I too have no preference regarding eateries, happy to go with the flow.
Edit: just looked on the map and see that it is, so your suggestion sounds fine for me.

As far as itinerary goes, with you as our local guide I am open to anything of interest (although I am keen to give my Samsung E-mount T/S lens a workout on the Radcliffe Camera)

WhatsApp is a good idea. I have been added to a golf group in the past but I’m not sure how to set a group up. Any volunteers (Howard )

Counting down the days.

Neil, sorry you cannot make it this time, we’ll look forward to you joining the “main” one later this year. I understand that work must come first, which is why I attended a Dyxum meet (Greenwich) on my first day of retirement in 2013

To get a WhatsApp group going I need to know everyone's mobile phone numbers, so yes please do send me a PM and I can set that up.

As an alternative thought for the meal on Tuesday night, we could consider going to the Turf Tavern in the centre of the city; a famous city pub, also featured in numerous episodes of Morse. It's classic pub fare again and usually some good beers. It's very popular and can get crowded, but if we book now we can secure a table. It would mean taking a bus in from Summertown (most of us may have concessionary passes?) and for Brian it is not much further away than Summertown, on foot.

Are Phil and Bob staying in Oxford and able to join us?

I need vegetarian but almost everywhere satisfies that requirement now. I checked the Turf Tavern and that would be fine and I'd prefer the more informal atmosphere of a pub.

Does aanyone waant a Minolta 7000i? My eyesight caan't cope with viewfinders now, I'll bring it along if someone can offer it a home, otherwise I'll drop it into aa charity shop.

The Turf Tavern seems to have a problem with its booking system; if I can't resolve this we can go to the Dewdrop Inn in Summertown, which has vegetarian options.

Just a couple of days to go and the weather forecast is almost too good to be true. I think I might struggle taking photographs without it being freezing, blowing a gale and, of course, raining. I did hope @Howard_S, our local resident of Oxford would take the lead in guiding us but this really is above and beyond . Thanks Howard.

Whenever I am visiting somewhere new in the UK I often dip in to my archive of JMW Turner's sketches and paintings (not originals ) to see if he ever visited and painted scenes I might recreate. A well know painting is of Oxford High Street and I'm looking forward to seeing it for myself. However, fans of JMWT will know he was well known for his "artistic licence" and often moved buildings in his scenes to make for a better composition. I spent hours trying to recreate his scene of Stamford, a town local to me, and it is impossible to include all the church towers and spires within one shot, but he did with his brushes .

It isn't too late to join us on Wednesday, or even Tuesday evening for a social get-together. You would be very welcome.

Thanks, Brian; as long as no one asks me the way to 'Harry Potter College'! (It has happened ...)

The Turner view is still there - fewer dons in academic regalia and lots more buses, though with a bit of luck and patience you can capture the essence of the view without too much of the modern distractions.

Oxford also has connections to photohistory, including William Henry Fox Talbot - the first photo in The Pencil of Light is 'Part of Queen's College' (see https://talbot.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/search/image/view/?image_id=3ff1a795-0ae3-4291-9c77-5a555583a5ca - https://talbot.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/search/image/view/?image_id=3ff1a795-0ae3-4291-9c77-5a555583a5ca ) and is on The High - and Henry Taunt, who created a huge archive of photographs from his commercial work. He died one hundred years ago in November.

I like this from the Wikipedia page on him:

Taunt died in 1922, six months after he turned 80. He left his entire estate to Fanny Miles, who with her sister Polly remained at Rivera for some years thereafter.

Taunt's estate included at least 53,000 photographic glass negatives. But the house was bought by a local builder, Frank Organ, and the glass negatives started to be either stripped for use as greenhouse glass or else smashed. A local historian alerted the Oxford City librarian, who in 1924–25 bought several thousand of Taunt's negatives and some of his prints, papers and manuscripts, for £98 10s.

A lesson to us all - make sure you keep backups!
