I ran into an interesting offer for a full spectrum A7(Make 1), and gave it a go.

Some first test shots from today, although not yet benefiting from the FF sensor, since I used the APS-C Sony 18-5mm OSS for these (+680nm filter).
The camera seems to work okay.

Thanks guys for your favourable feedback, glad you like the result.

Though it just was a quick testing of this lighter IR clip-in filter. But it seems I finally found the right darkred filter to be able to easily create such aerochrome IR look with my modded old a7

Exactly, it's a leftover of an abandoned railway turntable of a former train yard / depot. Nowadays this "lost place" is used as an ecological compensation area, so most of the tracks are removed there, few still left but overgrown meanwhile.

To me #1 si the best here, also the colors. In #3 i think the bike and background distract a bit from the subject. TFS Jaroslaw

I processed this photo differently than normally would and liked the red almost rusty look of the image. Might try with a different processing approach.

I'm an absolute newby when it comes to IR and full spectrum and such. Recently I bought an IR720 filter to see if it might open a strange new world for me. Today it was sunny enough to go out with the filter on my a7rii but the results were far from mindblowing ... I read the filter on the sensor is too strong!
So now I'm thinking of having my old a7 converted, but I also have a a7iii that I don't use much. From what I read, full spectrum gives you the most options.

Advice is very welcome! Which camera would be best: a7 or a73; is full spectrum a good idea; and is there a conversion service that you can recommend?

Welcome to the world of IR Leo!

Long exposures with an IR filter on unmodified E-mount bodies won't work due to the strong UV/IR cut filter stack in front of the sensor as you already discovered

So the thick hot mirror filter needs to be removed and replaced with a new https://www.astronomik.com/en/uv-und-ir-block-filter/mc-klarglas.html - clear glass filter (full-spectrum conversion). This will give you the full choice of using various filters, either different IR wavelengths or UV/IR cut filter for normal visible light spectrum (OWB) again.

If you're good at tinkering/DIY and have a good hand and no fear of electronics (well it's actually just removal of screws and flex-cables), you can do the disassembly of the E-mount body and conversion yourself. Which body you want to use and convert, a7 or a7III, makes no difference and it's up to you which one you prefer more from handling perspective.

For filters I can recommend https://kasefilters.eu/clip-in-filter-for-sony-infrared-filter-4in1-set - clip-in filters from Kase . They offer a set which also includes an UV/IR cut filter, hence the camera can be used for normal light spectrum, too.

I recently bought a converted Nex-5 on ebay for £105 - cheaper than converting one of my existing cameras. But I do miss a viewfinder, especially as the best results seem to come when the sun is out and the LCD is the most difficult to see.

I like the idea of clip-in filters - must see if they are available for the smaller sensors.

I have found conversion to B&W fairly straightforward and effective, colour renditions are far less satisfactory. Channel swapping is often pretty ineffective so I shall have a good look at the robertreiser link.
