Has anyone tried the LA-EA5 adapter with the Zeiss 135 1.8 a-mount lens? It'll largely depend on the body used that your comparing with. I don't have that lens but the LA-EA5 on a a7Riv with the lenses I have behave very similar to how they behave on my a99ii . I'm thinking CZ 24-70mm f/2.8 ( which is a SSM lens ) , Minolta 85mm f/1.4 , Minolta 80-210mm f/2.8 , and the Minolta primes such as the 200mm , 300mm and 400mm , all screw driven lenses . All the smaller , lighter zooms and primes likewise behave the same . There's no reason to believe the 135mm would be any different. There's only a couple of bodies that can AF screw driven lenses with that adapter , I haven't used it much on my a6600 as I've only just picked that camera up , but initial checking showed it also worked well . In that case you will only be able to use it manually focused . If you wanted to retain auto-focus you would need to buy an LA-EA4 , but the AF on the a99 would be better. The LA-EA5 will only focus screw driven lenses on the a7Riv , a6600 and presumably the a7Rv . when used on any body with SSM and SAM lenses it will behave just like the LA-AE3 . One forgotten option is the monster adapter - LA-EA4 with another print without the translucent mirror. Having converted two LA-EA4's - and still having an original - this means i'm confident in it. Having an LA-EA5 i'll look for a 2nd hand A7RIV though... Converting an LA-EA4 into a 4r is something that can be done by a non-clumsy person. You need patience and you should be able to cope with fine electronics. |

Your right , I forgot them . I had been about to get an a7iii just as they announced the LA-EA5 ( and the fact it'd only AF screw drive lenses with a handful of cameras ) and promptly cancelled my order . I keep thinking about getting the LA-EA4r chip to convert mine to use with the Minolta 500mm Reflex so I can have the focus point anywhere instead of just the centre . I'm using the APS Minolta Vectis 400mm f/8 Reflex with the Monster adapter LA-VE2 and that's focussing grate anywhere on the frame . I've been using my CZ 135mm f1.8 Sonnar on both my a99ii and my a7iv via the LA-EA5 adapter over the past 10 months since I bought the mirrorless camera. It performs equally on both, and on the a7iv there are the benefits of more advanced focus algorithms and firmware. Does that work? I remember it being said that the reason for centre-only PDAF on the A-mount cameras was because it took information from either side of the central hole in a mirror lens, whereas the other AF points put one of the comparison points in the hole or on the edge of it. People who own the 500mm reflex and the LA-EA4r conversion says it works well . Regards OSPDAF on E mount cameras , I have both the a7Riv and a6600 and I'm using the Minolta Vectis 400mm f/8 Reflex via the Monster adapter LA-VE2 and can confirm regardless if where I place the AF point , AF is fine . Focus is spot on , and AF speed is at least as good as on the film and digital cameras it was made for ( which like the A mount version , could only use centre point ) . In low light , regardless of where the AF point is , or type of AF area used , the lens can still hunt , especially with low contrast targets . I’ve used a few of my screwdrive lenses on the A7Riv and the A1 with the LA-EA5, including my 135/1.8 and the 500/8. The 135 focuses very nicely - the only caveat is that the camera wants to jump due to the rotation of the lens elements. Definitely feels better with a vertical grip (or even just a grip extension) - which suits me fine because I’m often shooting in portrait orientation with the 135. The 500 focuses OK - but part of my OK rating is probably technique related due to not keeping the central focus point locked on to moving targets. Perhaps the AF magic of the A1 has deskilled me.
