Between August 11 and August 14 I will be staying in the Duesseldorf region. My plan is to visit the "Insel Hombroich" (Hombroich Island) in Neuss (adjacent to Duesseldorf). Hombroich is a park landscape with a number of pavilions to exhibit art. The https://www.inselhombroich.de/en - website provides some information on this unique location (which also includes a former rocket artillery station).

Neuss is not far away from the border of both, the Netherlands and Belgium. I would be happy if DYXUM members want to join me there (or at any other point in the region).

Hi Harald, that seems like a splendid idea!

I could come to Hombroich on sunday the 13th (preferred) or saturday the 12th (less preferred but possible). Monday the 14th is also possible but then there's much less things open if you look at the website. Friday the 11th is not possible for me to come.

Insel Hombroich is on my "to do" list already for a long time. Let's see if there are any other people interested to join and then fix a day for a Dyxum (mini)meeting over there.

That'd be great, Pieter! Sunday would be ok for me. So what's needed is good weather and, maybe, some more DYXUMers on that trip.

Maybe another https://www.flickr.com/search/?text=hombroich - look at this location can help!

Let's pencil in sunday then, we can still change to saturday in case weather and/or other potential participants make that a better day.

I also see some good opportunities there to use the "non-Sony" system we both use

I've now put the date in the thread title, hopefully that will attract some others who would like to join us at this special place full of photographic opportunities.

Weather forecast for that weekend looks excellent, starting mid-next week it seems all the rain that is falling all over NWE at the moment will stop and normal summer weather returns: https://www.buienradar.nl/weer/neu%C3%9F/de/2864118/14daagse - Buienradar

I would like to join you guys on this trip to a magic Isle! Has some things in common with Verbeke. Plenty of photo opps, too many for one day. That rocket place looks very exciting, to me. Are you in for some car sharing, Pieter?🙂

Very good Leo, and car sharing/pooling makes a lot of sense. If I look at Google maps your shortest route passes very close to where I live so I'm sure we can work something out.

I'm sure your family is into visiting nice venues which include art and architecture, so if you plan a trip there on sunday august 13 you will meet Leo, Harald and myself (and maybe a few others) there "by accident"

From the visitor guide:

Please do not bring:
Play and sports equipment
Musical Instruments
Food and picnic accessories
Large bags, backpacks etc.
Selfie-Sticks, tripods
Walking sticks

I read that "One bag each from small to normal sizes are allowed"

No backpacks, quite restrictive for gearheads. How to deal with that?

Bring a messenger bag And "normal sizes" are in the eye of the beholder!

I am still undecided if I join.

I have just called the museum site and asked what these instructions mean - why backpacks are "banned".

They have had some trouble with people (hikers) coming into the cafeteria and loading a lot of food from the buffet (obviously a kind of "all you can eat"-option) into their backpacks (ample space). And they don't want this to happen again.

A normal backpack for photogear is, of course, allowed (I didn't ask about tripods, but I think a travel tripod would be no problem either).

That might ease the decision a bit, Addy!

Some more information:

At the very beginning of our visit we will have to buy tickets at the "Kassenhaus" (look it up on Google maps) - there are separate tickets for the "Museum Insel Hombroich" (Euro 15) and the "Raketenstation" (Euro 6). I am not sure whether one can buy a Raketenstation ticket directly at the Raketenstation (ca. 600m away from the Kassenhaus).
At the Raketenstation there is the "Cafe Biemel" which is open 12-18h. The cafeteria at the Museum is open 10-18h (the buffet is free, included in the ticket price - the reason to ban big backpacks).

At the Raketenstation the Hannah Linden exhibit will open at 10h, the Iwan Baan and Bart van der Leck exhibits will open at 12h. Another exhibit at the Feld-Haus for Popular Imagery (halfway to the Insel) will open at 11h.

There is just one exhibit (Schwitter and Arp) at the Atelierhaus on the Insel - opening at 10h. The exhibits will close either at 17h or at 18h. General closing time is 19h.

More information on the exhibits can be found on the https://www.inselhombroich.de/en - Hombroich website. Check the calendar for Sunday, August 13, and click on the events/exhibits. The distance between Raketenstation and Insel is a 5-10 min. walk.

I think both venues are interesting as they provide a lot of opportunities for landscape and architecture photography. The Iwan Baan exhibit is about photographing Hombroich (spoiler alert?). If there is a museum's shop there will be publications available by Thomas Riehle, the late photographer who documented Hombroich extensively.

There are guided tours by artists for both, the Raketenstation and the Insel, 90min. each. One can book them online, but today only Sunday, August 6, is available for single booking. I could inquire whether we could get a tour (Insel?) - if possible, by a photographer, if we think that's an idea worthwhile to pursue.

So I suggest that we start at the Kassenhaus (10-10:30h), get on a first walk on the Insel, have a second breakfast at the cafeteria (?) - and then we can decide whether to go over to the Raketenstation or stay on the Insel - and, probably, at some later point of the day, have a break at Cafe Biemel. As I said: thats's just a suggestion.

That looks like an excellent plan Harald.

Normally I'm not too keen on guided tours when photographing (I move way too slow then), but if the majority of the group is interested I will happily tag along, keep my camera mainly in the bag and learn something from what the guide is telling us.

10:00 Kassenhaus it is. I'll be visiting my sister in law in Limburg on Saturday, leaving me a 50 minute drive on Sunday.

Not a huge fan of guided tours, but I'll go with the flow.

I move even slower than Pieter so a guided tour is not my cup of tea either.
I think the philosophy of Hombroich is giving little or no information and letting you explore the place by walking around, guided by your own perception. I think that's ideal!

Have good holidays gentlemen, they will likely be worthy alternatives with photo and other opportunities.

The weather still looks good for sunday, temperatures between 20 and 24 degrees in the day and mostly sunny.

Saturday there seem to be some thunderstorms passing through the area but hopefully that will stay as forecasted and not move to sunday.

Let's hope the predictions will be on the spot. Friday, Sunday and Monday should then be free of rain (sunny, partly cloudy) - I have checked a couple of weather websites as well.

So we will meet Sunday at the Kassenhaus at 10:00 h (and we will wait for the latecomers). No guided tour, we will be all self-guided.

All the best, Paul! And you definitely will be missed!

For those who will join:
- don't forget to take a UWA with you (interiors, cramped spaces, unusual structures)
- weather will be sunny: don't forget the sunscreen! Although there is a lot of water at the location, mosquitos are not really a problem. Drinking water is free (at the cafeteria), as is coffee and tea (and more).

See you soon!

Talking about UWAs, I have a spare Voigtlander 10mm FF E-mount. Do you have one, Harald? If not, I can bring it if you want to try it.

Crisis averted, I feel much better than Thursday. I don't want to miss out on this opportunity, so I'll come to Kassenhaus with sun screen and UWA's and I'll see how the day goes.
