Let's kickoff the 2023 Dyxum Postcard Exchange (DPE). It's so fun to send and receive postcards from around the world ... let's keep the DPE momentum going for at least one more year!!

For those of you who weren't involved before, the details for registration can be found below. Here is the https://www.dyxum.com/dforum/2022-dyxum-postcard-exchange-dpe_topic141415_page1.html - 2022 DPE thread if you want to see how things work.

SUBSCRIPTION IS OPEN UNTIL 15 SEPTEMBER 2023

INTRODUCTION
The 2023 Dyxum Postcard Exchange is open to all members of the Dyxum community.

The intent of the exchange is to share prints of your own photographs with other like minded Minolta/Sony camera users (and other hangers on!), whether Digital or Film, via sending them as postcards.

THE PROCESS
The exchange will be structured as follows:

Registration - This will be a set period as announced in this initial call to exchange thread.

Each member who wishes to participate in the exchange must register during the sign on period. Please do this by replying in this thread only - do not send any postal address details to anyone yet - we will ask for this later.

FOR THIS TO BE A SUCCESS, YOU MUST BE COMMITTED TO SEND CARDS TO ALL YOUR DESIGNATED RECIPIENTS

You should show your intent to be involved in the call to exchange in this thread, but please DO NOT POST YOUR ADDRESS DETAILS ON THE PUBLIC FORUM!!!

Like the last few years there won’t be a draw for practical reasons. Once we have closed the subscription, we will create a list where we will try to create maximal geographical spread and travel distances for the cards.

The idea is to send cards to 5 people below you on the FINAL LIST (to be published after the submission closing date!).

Print and Post - The second to last and most important step is up to you guys. It's time to get a printing and sending them out!

How you print them and how you do your postcards is totally up to you. Keep in mind that some postal systems may have maximum sizes for postcards, so as a rough guide, printing standard 4 inch by 6 inch cards would be a good standard. You can print using home printers, but it may work out better in the long run to print using a mini-lab service (& probably cheaper).

The postcard backs, again it's totally up to you. You will find that quite a few places will sell self-adhesive backs, which may make the process just that little bit easier.

Once you are done, address the cards (please get them right!), put the right postage stamp on for the destination and send them on their way!

Receiving cards - Hopefully, over the following weeks you should start to receive postcards to your letter box. Enjoy the cards, marvel at others photography and be inspired!

Once the registrations are done and the print, post and receive process is well underway, a new thread will be started (or we'll use this one) that can be used for feedback and other general discussion. It’s a good idea to post that you have received a card, so we know that they are hitting the mark. It’s also a good idea to maybe make a comment or two about the cards that you receive.

With any luck, the whole process should be done and dusted over a two or three month period (approximately one month for registrations, two months for printing, sending and receiving).

RULES
Now, without getting too wordy, I think there are a few common sense rules. Briefly:

Be Committed - For this to be a success, the members who participate should be committed to seeing the process through. If you say you are going to send cards, please ensure that you do send cards!

Image guidelines - As this is done under the banner of Dyxum, please ensure that the images you send conform to Dyxum guidelines. (i.e., no racist, sexist, violent, pictures depicting cruelty, drug use, sex or nudity)

Text guidelines - A short description of the postcards' subject is useful for the recipient!

SOME GENERAL GUIDELINES
Theme - The theme is open subject, but it might be a good idea to show something local to where you live. Maybe show an image that was taken, say, within 100miles/160km of your home? This is not a strict rule, but try and keep it close to home. Not that we don't want to see your vacation photos, but the point of the exchange is to make unique postcards from your locale.

Personalize your cards - Once you get the list of recipients, maybe it would be a good opportunity to do some research on the members on your list? Maybe you could personalize the message or the image on the card? Maybe you might be able to send them something that they may not normally look at and see? When receiving cards, look at what has been sent to you with an open mind.

Don't be tempted to stick your card between two pieces of cardboard and put them in an envelope. Half the fun of sending and receiving postcards is how they end up at the other end. Sure, they might be a bit bent, but that adds to the character of a postcard.

Once all your postcards have been received (or if you get no notification, towards the end of the exchange period), maybe show what you had sent?

Try not to be lazy! Make each postcard a different image (if you can).
Don't forget, this is a Film Friendly activity as well!
If anyone wants to make suggestions to these rules or guidelines, just make a post.

Lots of participants from lots of different countries make these exchanges fun, so sign up now, and lets beat last year’s total!!

Thanks for signing up, folks. We are at 8 so far, representing 6 countries and 2 US states. With luck, we get well past 12 this year.

I'll check in with a couple of southern Californians I know who used to be active here on Dyxum. Maybe they'll sign up again too.

Chat this up around the forums, help with signups!

We're at 13 participants now, representing 7 countries and 6 UTC time zones (3 US states in 3 UTC zones)! There is a heavy northern hemisphere bias as usual (hi gregja!), average UTC of 0.52 so far.

We have a couple of weeks before we close sign ups. In the meantime, make sure you have a solid postcard printing solution.

I'll be printing here at home using an Epson ET-8500, sticky postcard backs from Amazon.

@Fred_S ... yes, nice to see the energy and momentum here!

@Mestari ... I'm glad you got your printer working OK! That's dye sub vs. ink jet. I don't think I've ever used a dye sub printer before.

Question for the folks in Europe -- in the USA we generally print 4"x6" for postcards. In Europe, are you using 10cm x 15cm paper, or A6 size? What would a 3rd party photofinisher provide?

I prefer sending and receiving 4"x6" (or its equivalent) because they fit nicely into little photo albums. But, it's also nice to receive panoramic-sized ones, or larger formats. I forget what the max postcard size is for the US Postal Service.

I'll post a pic of my little albums later, with all of the postcards I have received over the years ... I'll figure out how many DPEs I've participated in too.

In Europe it would be 10x15cm which is our version of 4x6".

My printer only supports 10x15 format so that's what I plan to send.
This is also one of the most popular formats at the labs.

I just took a look at my box of Epson 4x6 inch photo paper. It also says 102x152 mm ... close enough!

I'm glad you're making sure all of your hardware is working. It's good to print your photos. I actually need to print bigger more frequently, display my shots. 99% of the time I'm printing just 4x6 though.

Same here, but some time ago one man from Polish Sony forum gave me the ability to print 60x40cm prints for the cost of ink and paper. The results were amazing :) I don't have such printer at home, only that Canon and another one - office laser. But I encourage everyone to try the online photo book printing services, I gives me much more pleasure to view my photos in albums done that way :)

We're at 16 signups now -- 7 countries, 6 UTC time zones represented. 0.64 average UTC.

I bought some new "global" stamps yesterday, and I have some leftover domestic ones. I've been working on my penmanship too, LOL. I realize how horrible my handwriting is each DPE. I know some of you will use 3rd party postcard providers ... you folks have perfect penmanship!

Xolunanoke and I are ordering adhesive postcard backings, so you can see my terrible handwriting too, Art. Her's is impeccable. We'll be getting our images printed via White House Custom Color.

We're also going on a walkabout this weekend to get some fresh photos for the exchange

jvsanchez, glad you and Xolunanoke are totally into it! Happy shooting this weekend.

In your signature line, that should be an A7 IV, right, not A77 IV? I wish there was an A77 IV sometimes! I kind of want to find an old A99 just for grins, but I'm mostly mirrorless nowadays.

I'm on Sony nowadays all because we had Minoltas to use at home when I was a kid ... that early branding works!

My dad had a Minolta Maxxum growing up. I started on an A200, then an A700, then A77, then A77 II, then A7 II, and now the A7 IV. I quit taking pictures regularly for quite awhile, but it's good to have the itch and the inspiration back again. I've quite missed it. And Luna's just started, I think she's quite talented She's inherited the A7 II and a couple of lenses. I guess marriage has it's perks lol

I think I'll join, although I am somewhat torn on the different card printing options, primarily because last couple years I have used Posti's online card sending service, but last year there was couple cards that may have gone lost (one potential pitfall of this service is somewhat rigid address formatting that may not work for all foreign address conventions).

And I'm from Finland, UTC+3 for time being, UTC+2 once DST ends.

Tennis is popular in Sydney and the Open lead up events usually sell out. But we’re heading into dangerous Sydney vs Melbourne rivalry territory here which never ends well .

We're at 17 players now, 8 countries represented in 7 "standard time" UTC time zones. It's too tough to keep track of who does "summer time" or not.

@Hezu -- good luck finding a more reliable postcard solution.

I haven't read all the posts so maybe this is not needed. In past years folks would ask and/or describe how they put together these postcards. I found using https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0061QO92W?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details - this - very easy to use, simple, cheap but thick card stock, etc.

Does anyone know if there is a supplier of Post-Pix in the UK?

Failing that I am pondering making Instax WIDE prints of my selections as Fuji make a postcard-sized print holder and envelope:

Would this be too far outside the scope of the DPE?

Failing that CeWe (on Phil's recommendation, IIRC) offer a good card-printing service.

I've done this challenge a few times and it is one of Dyxum's best IMHO. Setting aside the couple of folk who have, despite the guidance in the intro, popped a 6x4 photo into an envelope and sent that, I have enjoyed seeing all the creative ways postcards have been made.

I have to say my consistent favourite has been MiPr who was the first, I believe, to produce very high quality personalised postcards. A style I unashamedly copied

So my method is simple and very cost effective. I source 300gsm photo quality matt card. I prefer the 7x5inch rather than 6x4 and setup a Photoshop template to print the selected photo in best quality borderless on one side. Separately I have created a "postcard back" template with a text box for the greeting, explanation about the image and signature on one side and and address text block on the right. Once I have the 5 names and addresses I can fill in the two text boxes and run the card through my Canon Pro 10S printer. The first time I entered this challenge I got into all sorts of pickles with trying to line up sticky backs, tried trimming them and ended up with a finished card considerably smaller than intended. This way works a treat for me, cost very little and I'm not dependant on a third party producing and sending the cards.

Of course, whatever works for you is part of the variety and fun of this exercise. But since Roger asked for descriptions on how we tackle the challenge, this is my solution. Good luck all.

Here is a quick and dirty scan of an example:

Agree, yes, the lining up of the photo onto a sticky back that will not let you re-align is an issue (think putting a screen protector on your LCD screen). I did have to very slightly trim one or two cards of the five because of misalignment.

Same here, because the backs seem just some millimeters larger than the printed photos.

I simply intended to write directly on the photo's back. I hope that's ok.

Some photo paper types may not have entirely blank backsides. For example at least some Epson photo papers have the name printed/watermarked on the backside.

The paper which I will use for printing cards is a TECCO glossy paper 13x18cm. I will use a sheet of adhesive DIN A4 paper for the back (I have a template for two cards per sheet) since the back of the photo paper does not accept writing with a normal pen on them.
Since the maximum size for postcards in Germany is 12.5x23.5cm I have to cut down the photo paper down to 12.5x18cm.

I am already thinking about where the photo walk will lead me to create some images for the DPE.

You could try https://www.dartmoorphotographic.co.uk/product/hama-postcard-stickers - these Howard - however, I have no experience of them.

I did use Cewe when I participated in the challenge (2021 IIRC) and thought they did a decent job. I don't have a particularly good photo printer so someone like Cewe seemed a good idea and a lot easier than the DIY route). I liked that I could print details of the photo on the back of each card and still leave space for the handwritten personal message. Their design software was very easy to use. I got extras for my wife, who is addicted to sending postcards.

Thanks for this, Phil. That site omits size information, but after a Google search the product looks identical to stickers made by Hama, which are 10x15cm.

My inkjet printer is is a cheap Canon home/office machine, and I'll do a couple of test runs to see how they look on some glossy stock that I have. Otherwise, CeWe look like they'll do a good job.

Just ordered mine up at the weekend from Cewe again and had notification they have been dispatched.

I had used vistaprint once in the past. The post cards from there were more like paper instead of card.

Nice to see so many getting ready to send postcards!

@Mestari -- if you print is on heavier photo paper, just writing on the back might work. I don't recall ever receiving one that way though. The postal services might have a minimum thickness requirement?

@Howard_S -- I just saw your post about Instax. I have received "postcards" enclosed in an envelope a couple of times over the years for the DPE. Beautiful prints, but part of the charm of postcards are the barcodes and dogeared corners we get from all of that travel!

@Roger Rex -- agree, getting that postcard back stuck on just right can be a challenge. I usually say "close enough" and send them off. I might have used a paper trimmer once or twice, but not worth the effort for me, LOL.

Keep up the energy, folks! I love to see it.

I think I will test how this looks and see then. I have a backup plan just in case ;) My prints are heavy, this is thermo-sublimation printer and the paper is thick by design.

It is mathematical possible to calculate exactly the distances between two points on the globe.
Put all coordinates into excel and maximum geographical spread can be found. Maybe next year?

OK, let's go! Here is the sending schedule for DPE 2023.

Other then previous years we have tried to really optimise the total flying distance of all cards togehter. However, with some regions more present than others, and the rule to send/recieve 5 cards each, your cards won't always fly to the other side of the world. Also you may have to send a card to someone that was on your list last year as well, but it's always nice to stay in contact .

Therefore, this year the is not a list where you have to send to the next 5 persons, but please see the table below.

To make this happen each person should PM their postal address to the 5 people that are ticked in the vertical column under your name.
For example Pegelli should PM his postal address to Adub128, MartyMoose, Bonneville, Kobra64 and jvsanchez.

Don't post your address here!!

One additional request is to write the date on your card. Sometimes it's hard to see when a card was sent since the postmark can be non-existent or illegible.

If you have more than 5 cards available then just announce it in this thread. Usually there are volunteers to get one of those via a PM with their address.

When PMing your postal address please mind its formatting - put it in exactly the same format as expected by your post office: different countries use different formatting and it can be painful to make sure that all is done correctly.

As usual the unspoken agreement is that postal addresses exchanged by PMs will be used solely for the purpose of Dyxum Postcard Exchange. Please mind privacy of fellow Dyxumers!

Have fun all and don't forget to report the cards you received here in this thread!!

I've received 3 of 5 addresses of people I need to send to.

No hurry with the addresses I need to send to, I won't get to making and sending the postcards until after I'm back from the trip with Fred_S and Dopol to the Isle of Skye early oktober, but hopefully that trip will provide plenty shots to make my postcards this year.

Well all my postcards are printed and I have 4 out of the 5 addresses to send them to. When I have them all I shall write a little on their context and address them by hand. I think that will be more personal than printing the text, but I just hope the international postal services can decipher my handwriting, which has developed in recent years into a the trail of a drunken spider!

As in previous years I plan take a photo of them all together before they are dropped in to the post box. This is from 2020:

And of course I shall scan and post those that arrive

Edit: Perhaps this should be in the postbox thread

As in previous years I plan take a photo of them all together before they are dropped in to the post box. This is from 2020:

And of course I shall scan and post those that arrive

Edit: Perhaps this should be in the postbox thread

I have 2 out of 5 addresses, but I'll be doing the same. I've always found it far more enjoyable to receive handwritten cards and handwrite mine in return

No hurry with the addresses I need to send to, I won't get to making and sending the postcards until after I'm back from the trip with Fred_S and Dopol to the Isle of Skye early oktober, but hopefully that trip will provide plenty shots to make my postcards this year.

I am with you on this Pieter!

I have now sent out my 5 addresses and I'm curious to note that for two participants we are each exchanging cards with each other. I have one long-term correspondent (every time I've joined I think), and one more address to come in. Better sort out my cards soon, I think ...

Okay folks, your postcards are on their way. I've just taken a quick snap of them (obscuring the images and text for obvious reasons ) and as soon as I have posted this message, I'm on my way to the local Post Office to post these. I'm sending one extra to our organiser for this year as a thank you.

Looking forward to hearing how they fare and if they reach their destinations at all. In past years they haven't all been successful so fingers crossed this year will be 100%
