From september 24 to 30 Dopol, Fred_S and pegelli visited Scotland and spent a little over 4 days on the Isle of Sky and a day in Edinburgh. We had a fabulous trip allthough both wind and rain were always present or close but we still managed a lot of photos.

This thread will feature our award winning (and other) photo's of this trip. But without a group shot it can't be a Dyxum meeting so here we come.

Thanks for starting this thread with the gorup shots Pieter! It was a great week indeed, with good company and fabulous views, despite the weather condiions.
This was what we were looking at when we left the IJmuiden harbour towards Newcastle, which wasn't exactly towards the bright sunny weather:

There was enough rain indeed. We sailed straight into it.
Then again, there is always a (chance on a little) rainbow somewhere

After a short night's sleep, we arrived in Newcastle.
The only things I've seen there was from the aft deck of the ship.
D2 Kind of castle

D3 Kind of houses

Then we drove off to Edinburgh.

D2 is Tynemouth Castle (on the left) and Priory (on the right). As usual, the priory became a ruin during the worst English king, Henry VIII

I won't get into the quibble about Kings, but D2 is a great shot with nice light on these ruins

And that new (to you) 100-400 really shows it's quality in F5 and F7, and the jukebox is quite easy to spot

Actually i prefer the yellow chair one floor higher.
The cormorant shot looks great and ..
i actually like the shape of this ship, although it is so rounded purely for looks, as i don't think there will be a lot of gain in aerodynamic performance.

The Wurlitzer certainly looks sharp Fred (F7) and the housing is not so attractive (F5 and F6), but it's a good start for our first intermediate travel goal.
The North hields f sh ma t seems busy but the cormorant parliament takes the cake.

Indeed, aerodynamics are not all that important while moving at a little over 30 km/hour, hydrodynamics and the hull shape are probably much more important to reduce resistance.

Careful with the ship names: the pictured ship is MS City of Rotterdam. There happens to be also MS Rotterdam, but it is a cruise ship in Holland America Lines' fleet and its port of registry is actually Rotterdam.

We drove to Edinburgh, more precisely to the Forth Bridge crossing the Firth of Forth. It consists of an impressive amount of iron and stone. It turned out though, that everybody in the neighborhood had decided to check the bridge themselves.
It took serious time to find a parking spot, but it's rewarding.

As Domien showed our next stop was North Queensferry to take a look at the Firth of Forth rail bridge, built by John Fowler and Benjamin Baker. It took from 1882 until 1890 to complete the bridge.

Sorry. I messed it up with the ship we saw when we left Newcastle, that was HLMS de Ruyter. Pieter took a photo of it. And we both wondered what these Dutch naval ships were doing in Newcastle.
I fixed the caption

F17 has a great sense of drama and scale. And given the scandalous vandalism that took away the Sycamore Gap tree at Hadrian's wall recently (see for example https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/gallery/2023/sep/28/hadrians-wall-sycamore-gap-tree-in-pictures - https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/gallery/2023/sep/28/hadrians-wall-sycamore-gap-tree-in-pictures if you don't know about this), it's fitting to see a new tree in place in a grand setting. Thanks, Fred!

Thanks Howard! I read about that tree indeed. The good news is that there are even more nicely placed trees on this island, so keep watching this thread

P24 deserves a fixed place on your PC. And P28 would be worthy too.
Let's move further North. Skye Island has a long line of Cliffs in the North-West, with some falls. That's where we went.

I like all the coastal shots at TOBHTA UACHDRACH (am I glad I took a photo of the sign). This was an interesting place and we were occasionally blessed with good light there, which makes the whole series (D14-17 and F26-31) a joy to look at.

Good stuff at Lealt falls Domien, the amount of water coming down was amazing. I like the mood in D22 and the Jan van Gent (Gannet) is a great catch and shows the tremendous wind force we experienced there.

I went down to the balcony you see in D23 and was almost blown over twice. Fred and Domien stayed wisely higher up.

P55 really looks inviting and like summer.
I missed P44, both falls in one shot.
The comma shot is good to. Was it nature or did ‘we’ help some with this platform.

p36, p38, p40, D21 and D22 and really all of them...
I will get there sometime, hopefully sonner rather than later, although that wind sounds scary. Please tell all the details of how it is there, if you have time :) Is there a lot of people visiting the island or you can be there a bit on your own enjoying nature?

It’s very busy in summer. Lots of tourists and midges.
That’s all better in this part of the year.
But then it rains a lot, you have to be prepared to that. On the other hand clouds and rain make for beautiful pictures.
The visit demands some preparations. What will I shoot and when and where.
Getting from one place to the next can take long if your trip isn’t well planned.
YouTube contains lots of (short) videos with things to do and see.
You can easily fill two weeks and get to new things each day. So you have to select.
From all places google maps contains photos/videos of what you can do or see.

The Landscape is breathtaking, but requires some climbing sometimes.

Next another fall. This time from the top of the cliff into the ocean.
The wind blew away half of the amount of water dropped by the fall.
A spectacular view.
The tourist organisation built a large parking to accommodate lots of people (that weren't here today)

Thank you :)
Seems like autumn would be perfect for me then. I HATE midges and am not so keen on busy places :) Climbing and preparations are ok, this is on my bucket list, I will prepare as well as I can.

Next was the Quiraing.

There is a large parking. Most people turn right and walk up the footpath below the ridge.

D29 Parking

D30 We climbed up on the other side. (Going up, we only met one guy)

Watch all the people in the upper left corner, also giving a sense of size.

D31 It was a steep climb, but not too difficult
[/url]

D32 with beautiful views
77

D33

D34 The view of the Quiraing became more beautiful with every meter

D35 but when we reached the top the clouds opened up and let the sun through

D36

I took too many photos in the ever-changing light, Fred and Pieter did too, before we climbed down again. I will not show them all.

We were told you had to come at sunrise to get a good view. I disagree now (though we have tried that too)

Really enjoying these shots, taking me back to some happy times sailing round the west coast of Scotland with my Dad.
Although my only visit to Skye was horrid - stuck in a very boring bay (Broadfoot maybe) waiting for a new starter/generator, weather yuk etc - long before next day delivery or cell phones !
Thanks so much

Great additions again Fred and Domien, I think that first day we had the best light and it shows in all the series.

Here's my contribution from Kilt Rock and Mealt falls

Glad you like them Harm! But a climax? Can't say but it's only day one, so maybe a little early for that

We walked down to the parking and continued our route to Uig, a small port on the west side of Skye.
we drove over a small road with many passing places.

D37 Skye's roads

One is not allowed to stop there, but for letting other cars pass.

D38 So, we stopped for a few photos . .

D38 . . to get a good view of Uig from above . .

D39 .. and once more when we got closer to Uig

D40 I throw in one more Uig-pano as the last shot of this day

Lovely to see it all back here from you!

I'll continue my series with the Quiraing, a breathtaking place!

Unfortunately I noticed back home that I had left my camera here on ISO50 from our previous stop at the Kealt falls. Too overwhelmed by the beauty that I didn't check the settings. The heavy wind didn't help with the camera stabilty, but I am still happy with some of the results. The place could deserve its own thread here.
