Day Prime 2024

Believe it or not, 2024 is already the 14th year we're running the "Day Prime" challenge.

Bob J started with the idea in 2011 and Leo ran it for 8 years until 2019 when pegelli took over for 2020 and later

If you want to get inspiration from previous years here's the links to the previous editions:

The challenge is to use as many of your lenses as possible in 2024

The idea of this challenge is inspired by Week 50, in which participants shoot with a 50mm lens for the 50th week of the year. The Challenge of Day Prime is to post pictures taken on the appropriate day for the lens - hence shots with a 16mm taken on 16 January, 28mm on 28 January and so on (after January it becomes more difficult but see the next post).

Day Prime is organised on basis of weeks. Day Prime weeks run from Monday till Sunday. The focal lengths that fall in that week should be used in that week; for example: week 1 runs from Monday January 1 - Sunday January 7 and is for focal lengths from 1 mm to 7 mm. On what day of the week this/these FL(s) is/are used is up to you but the photos should not be made before January 1 or after January 7.

This means you have a whole week to use your lens(es). Of course you still can use your lens(es) on the appropriate day, but if that day doesn't suit you because of work or weather or whatever, you can make your photo on any other day of that week.

Also because there are few lenses to use the later month of the year we made a change in 2022 that we will do this year as well. For the month of November and December any lens over 300 mm goes anywhere in those month.

Day Prime is called a challenge, but it's very easy going:

Rules:

You can use any prime lens you like
You can use any zoom lens you like, but you can only use the zoom ends
Adapters and converters that change the FL of the lens are not allowed except for dedicated converters (such as for the Sony E16/2.8 and/or FE28/2) and teleconverters for FLs of 135mm and more
You are free to use A-mount and E-mount cameras, others per non-alpha guidelines
You can post as many photos as you like made on the appropriate day/in the appropriate week
You can only post the photos that were made on the appropriate day/in the appropriate week
Cropping and minor straightening is allowed, but the photo should reflect the focal length of the lens

Have fun!

Further notes:
Please add EXIF data: camera used, lens used, aperture, exposure, iso
You don't have to sign up: just post your photos!
You can't drop out of this challenge: you decide on the days you want to participate: the challenge is to participate on as many days as you can
It would be nice if you post your better shots also in the https://www.dyxum.com/dforum/sample-images_forum28.html - Sample Images subforum (for A- and E-mount lenses) or go https://www.dyxum.com/dforum/index-nonnative-lenses-on-e-and-amount-cameras_topic102746_post1228224.html#1228224 - here for samples with non-native lenses

This challenge is for everyone! Everyone will learn something and everyone can enjoy it.
If you have not joined before and do not fully understand the guidelines, do not worry. Just start posting and ask as many questions as you want.

Me and my girlfriend went to Museum Voorlinden in Wassenaar, The Netherlands. We went to see the Anselm Kiefer exhibition. The last time we where there was on our second date (little over three months ago) and in the swimming pool I stole my first little kiss.

First the permanent collection (Laowa 4mm f/2.8 Circular Fisheye on the modest A6100, I love the weirdness of this little gem):

And then what we came for:

Nice series with that 4 mm Paul, especially 6, 8 and 9.
But the two happy smiling faces in #1 made my day!

Great place for such an important event, Paul! I hope many more will follow

Very nice series of Voorlinden and Kiefer (sometimes I regret having left The Hague :-)).

Thanks Leo. I discovered Voorlinden through your images. Been there several times, I love the vibe there and the swimming pool always gets me smiling.

That lovely 7.5mm fish has eluded me. Makes great planets!

Another great start Leo

Today we started week 2 for f/l between 8 and 14 mm.

Since I sold my 12 mm it will only be a 10 mm APS-C zoom-end for me this week, but I do hope to see many more photos from others in this range

Use a tripod and take long exposures and then the lack of daylight may not be that big problem anymore?

And personally I got only one 14 mm lens for this week, as my wider option (LAOWA 10-18 @ 10 mm) has been sold or perhaps more accurately traded...

Two of three lenses this week, APS-C, I haven't used my nex-3 in a year, and the shutter sound is worse (yes that's possible LOL) like it's a death rattle, but still functional....

Walkabout last night, rainy, didn't take tripod, then the rain stopped of course LOLz ... Samyang (mine says Rokinon) 12/2 ... I forget how awesome this lens is, the Laowa 9/2.8 is smaller and wider, but both focus to within three inches of the lens hood, which is spectacular!

The historical restaurant building in Kaisaniemi park in Helsinki was recently renovated and returned to the look that resembles what it was in 1800s when it was built. Today, January 11th 2023, the place opened as a cafe with name Cajsan Helmi (~ Pearl of Cajsa, the latter name refers to Catharina ”Cajsa” Wahllund, who originally founded the venue and after whom the whole are was later named).

Great start guys! I have been looking at a 7Artisans 4mm, but haven't bought it yet). These ultra wide FL's are quite a challenging, but Paul's work is inspiring (and keeping my GAS alive ).

So, for me Day Prime still starts at 12mm for now.

Just a few indoor snaps this Saturday morning.

I agree with Fred, excellent result!

How did your PP work? The easiest way I would see is putting the camera on a tripod and taking both a vertical and horizontal photo and then combine in Photoshop (making sure the optical axis doesn't move). But maybe AI or extensive cloning could do the trick as well.

Joining a horizontal and vertical shot, why didn't I think of that! Doesn't immediately comes to mind how to achieve that, but I'm sure I can figure it out.

Now I just vignetted heavily until the planet was round and increased canvas size slightly.

Nice set with the 12 fish Fred. #1 is probably the way the lens was intended to be used, but I like it better on FF.

The 7Artisans 4mm apparently is wider than the Laowa 4mm. That means more fingers and feet. And you probably need a NEX camera otherwise the battery compartment will be in view.

@pegelli: 17-2 wise decision. Looks great! Slight beautification would be to clone out the stray branches top left (that's what I would have done as they are not grounded to a tree, but I pity myself for it).

Curiosity after reading some good reviews and seeing it used by a few Dyxumers made me splash out on a `faulty` Viltrox 16mm 1.8 FE.
The fault being the LCD doesn`t work, which I wouldn`t have had much use for any way. At £135 it was worth a pop.

Thanks Fred, and yes they are building two bridges to replace this one. First ~200 m downstream a new bridge for cars and at about this place a new bridge for pedestrians and bicycles. Both will be straight .

There's now a temporary bicycle and pedestrian bridge across the Wijnegem locks which you can see in 21-6, since the new pedestrian/cycle bridge will only be ready in 2025

You're right Paul, today we started week 4 for lenses between 22 and 28 mm. There's nothing wrong with you, you only got infected by contageous GAS, it's not dangerous but there's no cure and you'll never fully recover

For me it's only 7 lenses this week, we'll see how far I get.

The banana bridge in Wijnegem keeps providing my day prime subjects (for the time being)

The plan was that the whole bridge would be demolished this weekend but an unexpected collapse stalled the works and they are re-thinking the plan before they continue. Until now only about 1/3 to 1/2 of the bridge is gone and that with a lot more "improvisation" to allow at least part of the water traffic to pass the bridge, currently only one of the three lock chambers of the Wijnegem locks can be used

Thanks Leo, I should have returned yesterday when they took down the "messy bit" on the left and something went wrong and rather than falling down it rotated onto the road beside it. Fortunately nobody was passing there at that moment so nobody got hurt, but is was a narrow escape for for a truck that passed there about two seconds before it happened https://www.gva.be/cnt/dmf20240123_95738075?utm_testfeature=playvideo-202401240606&utm_source=gva&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=newsletter_ochtend&utm_content=newsletter_ochtend&adh_i=78525786080657ba42918ff5c8bac623&adh_i=78525786080657ba42918ff5c8bac623&M_BT=166042126140 - See here (I hope you can watch the video without having to resister or go through a paywall).

I like your series as well, very diverse, both subjects as well as lens character. Favourites are the "Old Man" and "Das Auto". The last one shows so little of the car but it's still immediately obvious which model it is

Not as romantic as it looked, I think the smoke was the owner lighting a small coal stove and it smelt awful, I seem to recall old british Rail steam locos smelt similar !!

A couple of hundred yards from the Shropshire Union canal where the first 5 shots were taken lies the much bigger Manchester Ship Canal with the Refinery in the background and the last pic is from very near the Museum - didn't have time to go in !!
Hope you enjoy these I certainly enjoyed taking them !

Thanks for the link, Pieter! Maybe just as well that you weren't there! Not on Day 28, at least; Day 200 would be fine

One more with my beloved Oly 18:

Minolta's White Album
https://flic.kr/p/2pujXVi">

In late 1989, a Japanese reporter, M. Toyohiro Akiyama, was invited on the Mir international space station. Minolta provided him with a special kit that comprised:

a white Dynax/Maxxum 8000i camera body
a regular (i.e. black) 3200i flash
a regular 24-35mm f/4 zoom lens
a regular 35-105mm f/3,5-4,5
a regular 100-300mm f/4,5-5,6

As M. Akiyama was the first Japanese ever to stay on the Mir space station, Minolta issued in 1990 a limited edition of the Dynax/Maxxum 8000i, known as the "Mir" version. This kit comprised:

a white Dynax/Maxxum 8000i camera body
a white 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5
a white 5200i flash

This kit was sold in a specific box that also comprised a leaflet on this limited edition camera.

Using the "macro" switch on The Wide Beercan 28-85/3.5-4.5, a900, a brilliant idea "From the Mind of Minolta"; being an old lens the MFD is across the room, the switch (not "macro" LOL) allows close focus, which at 28mm works well.

Sidebar: on The Normal Beercan 35-70/4 the "macro" switch is on the tele end, at 70mm. On this 28-85 the zoom is "backward", the tele end is most retracted, the wide end is most extended (same as 35-70).

The difference between the farthest close focus, and nearest close focus, macro switch engaged

Strangely I don`t have any 28s these days, must have sold them all!

Been one of the worst weeks weather wise I`ve ever encountered. Two back to back storms, the first had gales hitting us with 70-90 mph winds and torrential, monsoon like rain most days. A few shots when possible.

This is our normal walking path that has featured in a few shots before!

Another example of Storm Ishas power, too many trees down or damaged to include tbh.
