Great start Anssisa - thanks for jumping in !

Haven't done bird photography to speak of since getting the 7D, but here's one I've posted before - a slide scan from a shot with (probably the 7) and 400G:

and a couple more, from a trip to Yellowstone a few years back, sort of "birds in the landscape" ...

and this one is more landscape than bird, but I waited for this osprey to fly directly in front of the waterfall to trip the shutter:

I nearly filled a 1Gb card with bird shots on holiday last week, so far have 2 uploaded; before I go too far with processing, is it better to clone out branches or twigs etc(second pic) or leave the pic as taken (first pic)

Hi Entropy,
yes, it's a pano. I wanted to shot a series of the heron taking of, for selecting the best shot afterwards. At viewing the images at the PC i noticed, that they overlapped a little and had the idea to stitch them. It was hard work, my favorite pano-software (autostitch) did not manage to stich them. The other one i use (old demo of PanoramaFactory 2.4) couldn't do the job either. So i had to stitch image 2 and 3 with panofactory and 1, (2+3) and 4 with autostitch.

All of them are awesome shots - for the ones you don't know, I found this great site http://birdquest.net/afbid/index.php - it costs nothing to join if you want but you can scan their pics to get the names. If you can't find them and you join, you can send your pics for identification.

Am so jealous of your fighting Vultures and that Secretary Bird - wow - never got that close! And as for the Ground Hornbill - FANTASTIC!!

All well captured, I prefer 3,4, 6 & 7, the birds of prey with the straps on their legs and the parrot(?) with ring on its leg look less natural to me.

An excellent series guys. Here are a few more to kick along the thread. My old mate the black shouldered kite. I interrunped him while he was having a spot of bunch - hmmmm yummy:

Hope you weren't eating while you were viewing ;)

I've got lot more of other birds, but I'll wait for you to clean up your mess.

Birds are amazing creatures (I guess all of you know that) but are also a tough subject (for me anyway). I always find myself too far away, with overcast sky, slow lens (AF and glass), below the subject all the time and with no tripod.

I got this picture because while sitting outside with my friend last sunday I saw a cardinal fly by (already late to catch that one). I thought it might come back so picked up the 7D and beercan. Well it didn't come back :-( but I got this one (sorry don't know its name)

Cropped with some PP (more than some)

Overcast, Beercan

Great shots guys

Great shots you all!
There were quite a few that had me hooked in front of the pics for a very long time. I must also admit that birding is a challenge i really like, im kind of addicted, totally, to it now. I even put an order for a longer lens, as i everything i shoot has been @ 200mm. Here are a few from yesterday;

Now i need to go out and shoot more :)

Why did the turkey cross the road?

Through the not too clean truck windshield yesterday with the wildflower lens, but you shoot with what you have when you come across a picture that will disappear. After this I tried pull off and get out to shoot again, but they were already into the grass. The image is cropped to about 10% of the original area. Apparently the lens focused around the bugs and Photoshop auto-temperature took care of the green filter.

This is a Wild Turkey hen with a newly hatched brood.

Squint hard and you will see tail-end Charlie lagging behind.

It just didn't occur -- not 100% sure why either, maybe the angle of the light, my shooting angle and short distance to subject.

Hey Analytical, the turkeys might be a little soft, but that's a classic shot of some two lane Texas black top. Maybe thay can use it in the next field guide :D.

What's the wild flower situation like in the hill country?

It has been a good year for almost everything and there are bluebonnets where they have never been before. Actually bluebonnets aren't as interesting individually as some others, but if you live in Texas you are required to shoot Bluebonnets at every opportunity

Apparently it flies without actually using it's wings.

I visited the English school of falconry recently, a great place to take your camera and a great variety of 'raptors'
(raptor = carnivorous birds that hunt and kill other animals)
This is a Kestral.
Minolta 200APO HS f3.5 iso200

I really struggled to get any decent photo's during the flying displays, these 'suckers' are fast i.e kestrals, falcons, hawks. I was using a Sony Alpha, I tried AF-C but no way can that keep up. These birds were usually flying from a fixed point to their handler and I think the best way was to pre-focus on a point switch to MF, track the bird to the prefocused point and shoot ! still no great success really.
This is one of the slower birds and it's not very sharp.
Minolta 200APO HS iso200 f8

Don't ask me why I have the static bird at f3.5 and the owl at f8 ?

Did get a shot of this little night hawk, which I like.

Here is a Cooper's Hawk that was outside my front window.
He was looking around for a quick lunch.
I had to take the shot through my front double paned insulated window.
If I had gone out the door, he would be gone.
