Please share your experiences with photo sharing and hosting services here.
There are various photo sharing sites on the internet with different policies like free/paid accounts, free hotlinking, galleries, editing the layout of your account and so on. Any type of sharing service is welcome here.
Tell your ideas about the services you have used.. how easy is the user interface, how configurable is your gallery, are you satisfied with the service, what kind of features they provide and etc.
I'd be glad to see opinions for both free and paid services, and is it worth to upgrade.
Finally, don't forget to add a link to your favourite photo sharing/hosting site.
thanks in advance for your participation. |
Those who are interested in custom made web pages, I recommend http://www.5gbfree.com - http://www.5gbfree.com hosting - 5GB free, ftp access, PHP, ... Together with JAlbum (for instance) quite handy. The web server works fine so far.

i've started using 5gbfree too, its very very useful.
My previous gallery is in flickr which is while very easy to use, also a bit frustrating with its free accounts. It will show only your lastest 200 photo and will not let you open more than 3 sets.

I've just started using http://picasaweb.google.com - Picasa Web Albums . It integrates nicely with http://picasa.google.com/ - Picasa (duh) which makes uploading (and resizing if you want) pictures very quick and easy. They give you 1GB of storage and unlimited number of albums for free.
The interface is simple, clean, and displays your images to fill the available space in the browser window. It also can generate a static link to your image, so you can embed it in a webpage (or post it on dyxum.com), but you're limited to these image sizes: 144, 288, 400, or 800 pixels. Usually for dyxum I resize to 800, but this example is sized for a thumbnail (144px):
I'm no pro; I don't need a fancy website or tons of storage. All I need to do is share photos with friends, family, and post to dyxum. So picasaweb can double as my online photosharing service and image hosting. If convenience is a deciding factor for you, check it out.
I haven't loaded much yet but if you want to get a taste of the interface you can look at this http://picasaweb.google.com/reid.kaufmann/BroomfieldTrip - album from a recent trip.

gvknight: i used flickr, extremely reliable and functional. It has hotlinking for free (so you can post on dyxum or other forums) but it has some other limitations on the free accounts, one is you get only 3 photo sets (those are like galleries) but you can still sort your photos with infinite tags. other limitation is your account will always display the lastest 200 photo. The older ones should come back when you upgrade to paid account.
i instead gave up and started setting up my own site. I'll still use flickr for hotlinking though.

http://photobucket.com/ - Photobucket seems OK and is free - if you subscribe you can get extra features (like slideshows), but the basic package gives you IMG text for each pic which just cuts and pastes straight into Dyxum postings...

I use Fotopic.net for galleries, Freeshare.us or Gigafiles.co.uk for hosting and hot linking, all are free. Fotopic do allow limited hot linking but it can be a pain to do.
Fotopic AFAIK is the only one I have used with a facility to use FTP for uploading which means you can set up a large batch of files and send them all together as against most sites which allow up to about 10 files at a time.
I did experience a hiccup with freeshare a few weeks back when the site was down for part of a day, otherwise no problems.
I don't like the appearance of Flickr and it can be a bit of a pain as in some cases it increases file sizes, not so much a problem here but some sites have a file size limit.
Image shack looks even worse than Flickr to my view, I have also tried Putfile.com again free and fairly easy to use, but a bit untidy layout.

have been using multiply.com for some time now.
they let you post huge images, and for 6 months they stay there. if someone orders prints they get to stay more there. if not, they MIGHT delete them, it's in their ToC.
multiply does not allow hotlinking btw, but i use it for photosharing with my friends.
They also have a very good access control system, you can have public photos, photos for friends, only certain friends, etc etc. quite versatile.
Also using Photobucket, especially since they upped the res at 1024 x 768 for free accounts. unfortunately they only have global access control, based on password, which isn't the most convenient thing.

Today I downloaded http://www.piclens.com - PicLens , a very useful free tool for browsing photos. Literary, I can view all my photos on flickr in a blink of an eye! It works like a fantasy on Firefox, browsing for images is much, much faster. It works with some other photo sites too, and with other browsers. I recommend it.

I also like zenfolio. Now that I have the premium account, I get unlimited storage, uploads via a java tool, file size is a generous 24MB, very good controls over access, 7 different viewing sizes from small thumbnails to original.
It has effectively become my remote 'storage' solution for photos.
The premium account also gives my a shopping cart, and a watermark assignment function.
It's all very easy to set up and use, with some nice 'skins' if you're starting fresh.
They have some more economy orientated packages as well, alongside a free trial.

I personally use flickr, for unlimited upload it's 25USD per year:
- quite cheap
- simple, clear, rock-solid, fast and
- not blattered with useless social-networking features I personally hate in this context
But give a look to zooomr (http://www.zooomr.com), it's completely free and surely worth a try.
And yes, also ipernity (http://www.ipernity.com) is there for you (too much bloggy thing to me).

All I've ever used is flickr, and knew there were other hosting sites available but didn't realize there were so many. I upgraded to the Pro (paid) account because of upload limitations and it is well worth it. There are no limits on file size, number of pics uploaded at one time and unlimited storage space. I've got a little over 1000 photos online right now. There's also different plug ins such as the Flickr Uploader tool that's really nice. A window will come up that you can drag photos to or you can search files with it too. And it will add a 'Send to My Flickr' command line to the right click mouse menu for a quick upload of a single pic. And recently they added line charts for each pic to track number of views, downloads etc. I've never used them but you can also get prints and then things like coffe mugs, key chains and such.

We've been doing some research on this as I'd like to run competitions for our shop through a sharing service if possible.
One of the greatest dangers with Flickr is that you sign over the rights for them to distribute any photo they have under whatever terms they like - in effect you assign them copyright as you can't control what they do with your images and they are automatically licensed royalty free to Flickr.
Smugmug is a little better in that they guarantee not to sell your images (which Flickr has done in the past - to Virgin no less and without ascertaining whether a model release existed) and they do not claim copyright. The only rights you assign to them are for the use in the website.
Image Shack and Free Image make no claims over the rights of your photos but for our purpose don't suit as they don't have communities.
Bottom line - tread warily, especially if you are a 'good" photographer.

Pegelli - Photobucket is worse than Flickr - you are granting them and all other users royalty free access of all publicly displayed photos for as long as they are on the database - and removing them is most problematic (as it is with Flickr).
DeviantArt requires you to give them royalty free access to distribute the images but the ToS do not describe what limitations exist so assume none....
Smugmug are the only ones I have found which specifically state the limitations of the royalty free licence: ...as we deem appropriate in providing the Services authorized or requested by you ie apart from hosting the photo they have no rights to it. Of course there is still nothing preventing others from accessing your photos but at least they won't sell your photos without your permission.

OK, I just started my SmugMug 14 day free trial and posted my first pic from there.
Uploading was a breeze. Is there any way to quickly link the picture from there into a Dyxum post. With photobucket you get a field where you can in copy the link including the BBcodes with one click.
Does SmugMug have a similar feature, what I did yesterday was right click the picture, select properties and pasting the web reference in the script after pushing the little tree icon. It works, but it's a lot more clicks, so I think there must be a better way, but I couldn't find it.

Peg - You need to enable sharing for the album (customise button). Once that is done and the required photo is on the screen a "share" button appears which allows you to link to a variety of sizes based on the original - with the A700 I usually reduce to about 1/3 of the original in CS# and then link the medium or the large depending on the picture. My Blue Wren (see Gallery 52) is extra large as the crop meant it started out smaller.

OK, 3 days after signing up to SmugMug and updating many recent posts from the new host I must say I'm very happy to have jumped ship, put my pictures in a more secure environment and no longer be bombarded with all kind of adverts that I'm the 100.000 th winner.
Posting a picture is still 2 clicks more vs. Photbucket, but I think the advantages outweigh this minor drawback. There's probably a lot more options I need to start exploring. Is there a SmugMug dedicated Dyxum community ?

Smugmug is as good as it gets. Their customer service (including the dgrin forums) is excellent, their product is great, and "they get it." That is, they understand that it's all about the photos and how to make your big, beautiful photos (and galleries) look great on the screen.
This coupon will give you $5 off your first year of Smugmug: AfVT1ZL8TROgg (I get $5 off as well, so there's full disclosure)!

You can save a friend $5 on a SmugMug subscription and earn $10 yourself! So i think its the same for Pupator, as i cant think of him having a wors deal from smugmug than me...

hello, I'm having some problems with gigafiles.co.uk; I have a free account and they promised 1Gb bandwidth per month but it's been more than 3 months and the bandwidth counter keeps going up and never resets; now it reached the limit and the last photos I uploaded cannot be seen by others.
I sent them an email and the only response was a recommendation to switch to a pay account.

Try photobucket (free and works well) or SmugMug (payed and works even better). Only problem with photobucket is that you give them the right to use any photo's you upload free of charge. SmugMug has no such "fine print"

I use flickr, pro member comes free with my bt package so no worries about numbers of pics. I have also tried loading to fotolibra which is more of a commercial site, but after 12 images there are costs involved.
Any one sold anything through photolibra? I have had quite a lot of interest throug Flickr, and I don't have that many images there yet!

I have a question about Flickr. Some people post using flickr and clicking on the photo links back to the flickr page... I would like to do this but can not figure out how. Posting the image works fine but I have yet to figure out the magic formula (ie html) which makes the image into a link. Thanks!

If what you want is something like;
http://Faldrax.Org/Images/Small/DSC00795_e1.jpg">
The code is;
[ URL =httt://...Large Image][ IMG ]http://...Small Image[ /IMG ][ /URL ]
but without the spaces.
The 'easy' way to get that is to use the Insert Hyperlink button to put a link to your main image in Flicker with 'Image' for the screen text.
Then use Insert Image to get an image link to the small image you want to display.
Then cut and paste the whole Image link in place of 'Image'.

So like this:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/26845096@N06/3805637242/sizes/m/">
The code for the above (with a space added to the beginning [ URL= and to the middle [ IMG] to make it visible)
[ URL=http://www.flickr.com/photos/26845096@N06/3805637242/sizes/m/][ IMG]http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2533/3805637242_3b80ed71dd_t.jpg[/IMG]
Awesome! A quick note, the URL can be changed to any URL of course. Which allows me to shamelessly promote my flickr page!
Thanks a lot!

I really like SmugMug. There is a nominal annual fee but you get what you pay for - in the case of SmugMug, a web site that makes you look more like a pro even if you are far from it like me. Uploads are quick & easy and you can easily organize photos into galleries. Once uploaded, you can rearrange them and even move them to other galleries. I did not plan my galleries well so I'll be reorganizing much of my site soon. The only problem I expect is that many of the photos I've linked to Dyxum posts will either need to be relinked or just dropped.
http://raisiner.smugmug.com/?preview=1 - My SmugMug
Only problems so far are a few maintenance outages at inconvenient times.

Bob,
I also use and love smugmug and like you haven't thought through from the beginning how to set up a good gallery structure. (currently it's just galleries per month and a few special events (mostly dyxum meetings and challenges)
This makes it very easy for me to navigate but totally uninteresting for visitors.
To avoid the problem you talk about (losing all the links to my dyxum posts) I have made the following plan to avoid that:
1: unlist all my current galleries (so visitors can't see them anymore)
2: build a visitor friendly gallery structure for the better shots I want to showcase there (so not every shot I post on Dyxum)
3: make a copy of the pics I want to show visitors in my "unlisted" date driven galleries
4: move these copies to the appropriate spot in the visitor galleries
In terms of future operations I would still make the first upload to my date driven gallery structure and post to Dyxum from there, and then copy/move selectively to the visitor sector as I want to show pictures there.
Comments, questions and improvement suggestions more than welcome, as I'm still designing I would like to get some input to make sure I do it right the second time

Pieter, yours looks like the best way I've seen. I had considered a variation of it but had concerns about unlisted galleries not showing up in Dyxum. I wanted to test it but haven't gotten that far. So, here's my test from an unlisted SmugMug gallery. My dear departed Katie, love of my life, taken from me at the early age of 5...
Since this works, I have no excuse but to follow your ideas and reorganize my SmugMug.
Thanks!

This must be why I have several images with hundreds of mystery "views"! I started digging into the stats that photobucket provides and found that several images that I've only linked on dyxum are also viewed on mySpace...alot.
I don't know if I am very happy about that.
On one hand, I don't "make a living" with my photography - it's purely for my own enjoyment...so I'm not worried about losing income. And it's even somewhat flattering to know that my images are being viewed unsolicited (so to speak).
But, it would be nice to know exactly who is using them and what they are being used for....which they don't divulge in their stats.
Anyone else know more about this photobucket/mySpace situation?

I had used Google's Picassa for about half a year. It's a decent service/application, but since I received almost no comments, I switched to Flickr earlier today. So far I like what I see. Lots of customization features, but still quite convenient .
Talking about Flickr, are there any groups made up of Dxyum members?

BUMP.
This TP has been quiescent for about about a year, now. I'm hoping folks will step up with some newer, up-to-date opinions. Or, maybe things haven't much changed...? However, it deserves a bump to get it to the eyeballs of newer members (I note Bretannia bumped it back in '08 for that reason).
There's also http://www.dyxum.com/dforum/picasa-flikr-other-whats-best_topic55495_page1.html - this thread (which is a bit newer, and which points here, so I thought I might return the favor... ;-) .
The impression I get from these threads is:
- For friends-and-family sharing, and for primarily-web-based uses, a great many of the free sites will work fine; note that full, ultra-high-res images may exceed max file-size and/or quickly exceed total-storage limits, however.
- Beware of Flickr, DeviantART (and quite a few others!), claiming nearly-unlimited rights (or at least a broad right which needs to be more limited for IP reasons) for distribution/use of members' images. If this isn't a worry for you, these are good choices for access to the user-communities there. They can also be effective advertising/drivers to your "real" website.
- The choice of "pro" users, and users who just prefer "pro-like" presentation, seem to be the paid options from SmugMug and Zenfolio; nobody has anything bad to say about either one. These may not be the best choices for friends-and-family folks, due to a bit more overhead setting up. While the Smuggies seem a bit more numerous (in these threads), we cannot conclude it's "preferred" because there are just too few data-points for either one...
Me, I'm off to look at SmugMug & Zenfolio in greater depth...
- Steve S.
edit: various, for typo's and for content

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the bump, I was just about to write something about my small recent web project. Here we go:
Firstly, this is the result of my project: http://chuongddh.com - http://chuongddh.com
My Demand:
I want more control for my pictures gallery, content... ect. This is something I don't have from flickr or facebook album.
Ok Here are the required pieces for my project:
+ A domain - I bought my chuongddh.com domain for $10.56/year from goddady.com. They may have discount; different domain extensions have different prices (domain.info is cheapest I think).
+ A host - I bought a host plan from Bluehost.com at discount $3.9 month for 24 months (regular price $7/month). They have good review and number of services.
Note: Bluehost.com provides a free domain if you use their service. Because, I used that free domain for different purpose, I paid extra to goddady.com
+ A web application - I use free php web application Zenphoto from zenphoto.org for it. You can use any other web app like Wordpress, Jalbum...
Total cost is: about $4.9/month
The advantages are:
+ My own website with the look and feel I can control. I can add-on plug-ins, change theme. They have more plug-ins/themes than what I need at this point.
+ I can integrate my web app with the wordpress account. This requires a plug-ins.
+ From the host service, I get unlimited space, free MySQL database, free email,...They also provide pretty nice CPanel to administrate your host and content.
+ Fairly cheap.
The disadvantages are:
+ People don't know about my website unless I bring it to them. This is a plus of community of flickr or facebook.
So how difficult is it? I can say it fairly easy, I spent zero time for coding. It may be tricky a bit when I mapped the host with domain; I have to do this because I bought domain elsewhere (not required if I use Bluehost domain). However as long as I followed the instructions, things went smoothly.
Cheers,
Bun Do

Just a note on Zenfolio. Had some feedback from customers that the ordering process is too complicated. I sort of fixed this, by cutting down on the number of options presented. (Who wouldn't want the option to turn off color correction? : )
Grandmothers, some of whom aren't very web-savvy, can be testy about such things. I was told they want to get straight to the prints-ordering page (Zenfolio has an overview page that offers submenus to prints, frames, gallery wraps, keychains [separate from prints], mugs & stationery, etc.).
I wonder whether SmugMug is more technophobe-friendly?

Quietbun has given us a nice "roll-your-own" alternative, here. Kudos, a nice-looking site, and many thanks for the write-up!
I'd like to ask a few questions, make a few comments...
quietbun wrote:

Had you compared the "premium" or "pro-oriented" services? In particular, you cited flickr and facebook, which seem so be aimed for a "lowest-common-denominator" sort of site: minimal demands on the photographer setting up the site. I wonder if you found (or would have found) controls & customization at the higher-end sites to be superior...?
Also, did you look at other roll-your-own options, e.g. Coppermine, Gallery2, etc...

One other advantage to the SmugMug/Zenfolio side of things: they have pre-existing relationships & special deals with various vendors and suppliers. In particular, if you plan to SELL from the site, they have e-commerce infrastructure and accounts in place. Other things include business-cards and the whole panoply of photo-products (calendars, books, greeting-cards, etc).
Another DISadvantage for the roll-your-own: if anything breaks, you have to fix it; this includes the discovery of security vulnerabilities &c.

My Photobucket account is private, and as far as I can tell it only gets used when the linked images are viewed on Dyxum or another forum where I occasionally post photos. My PB stats don't seem to indicate any other unusual activity. I don't think anyone but me can actually view the images on PB, so I guess that's why they don't appear anywhere else.
I have the free PB account -- simply because I don't need anything larger.
It is, of course, quite separate from my own website, which is used to promote wedding and other work. It's an html site that I created myself using Dreamweaver, and it is hosted elsewhere. I don't use my website for hotlinking photos simply because that uses up web space and bandwidth that I am paying for and really need for other purposes.
The Photobucket clause about usage states: By displaying or publishing ("posting") any Content on or through the Photobucket Services, you hereby grant to Photobucket and other users a non-exclusive, fully paid and royalty-free, worldwide, limited license to use, modify, delete from, add to, publicly perform, publicly display, reproduce and translate such Content, including without limitation distributing part or all of the Site in any media formats through any media channels, except Content marked "private" will not be distributed outside the Photobucket Services. So I am assuming that they don't distribute private photos outside PB, and although I guess they may have done so within PB, I am not aware of it.

Steve, You are absolutely right. I spent some time research and found the followings:
Firstly before my project I read some reviews on pro services. And to be honest, I was back out by the fee of those services. The provider I found reasonable is Fine Art America.
Secondly, I agree with the disadvantages you listed. I set it up so if sth goes wrong I have to look for solution either contacting my host service, or fix it myself. Therefore, it's suggested to keep my data back up regularly and the process of restore and set things up is clear in site administration. I did have to restore database and set up my site again once.
Lastly, I did compare Gallery2 and Zenphoto. The reason I pic zenphoto because there are potential third party plug-in for paypal, google checkout ect. Moreover, my host service guy is also providing a free shopping cart service... However, I will have to spend time to learn about the whole business process if i want to set it up and things will be more complicated .
So my plan is to move step by step. Right now my website is just a showcase; and when it comes to selling picture, I would consider different integrations, or just making an account with Fine Are America and link it with my current site .
Edit: spelling and others.

I've been using Photoshelter which does not advertise the fact that they have a free version. You have to hunt around a bit for it on their site as they want you to buy a subscription. You get one gallery and a free Gig of storage for that. They also copy protect your images so that others cannot steal a copy of the file and it ends up on some disk collection being sold as stock freeware. While I am not a Pro, I am interested in all the workshops it provides to assist in becoming a Pro if one ever decides to. It is set up to SELL your photos to others and, as one improves over time, they need not have to move from one site to another.
You also get a custom URL with your name. Here is my gallery, I am not very proficient at HTML so someone here at Dyxum has helped me to post my first photos. You can see that it puts a Copyright watermark right on the image, which can be your name if you use one of the paid versions etc.
