Even if you are by nature a solitary photographer, you are likely to get a real buzz out of meeting up with other Dyxum members to take photographs. It is fascinating to see how others tackle photographic subjects and great to actually meet the people you have been conversing with on-line.

This topic is for discussion of possible meetings anywhere in the BeNeLux region. Dyxum members are invited to suggest meetings and make preliminary plans in this thread. Once you have settled on a venue and date/dates, PM me or any other admin/moderator about having a specific planned event thread set up (this makes your event more visible to other members!).

Keep an eye on regions that are near where you live and, if you are visiting somewhere that has a group, why not drop them a line in their regional thread?

An index of all the regional threads, planned meetings and resulting photographs can be found http://www.dyxum.com/dforum/forum_posts.asp?TID=13590 - here

Hi all, I'd liked to meet up with some of our Belgian and Dutch buddies somewhere in Antwerp or another interesting site in Flanders. Anybody interested ?

Antwerp sounds great, love that city! Always wanted to shoot the docks there (though I can always ride my bicylce to Rotterdam...).

Not too soon though, still saving for my 16-80 Zeiss...

Hi all,

He's still alive, not dead.....:-)

Next week I'm moving from Den helder to Varsenare (4km from Brugge:)))) so Antwerp ,Gent or Brugge is fine to me.
Because of the moving, I've a lot to do.
So its depending on when you like to meet.

Let me know and I'm in.

Hello,

Antwerp is OK for me, been to Brussel and Brugge recently, so Antwerp could be "the next city" for me. It all depends on the "when".

If it fits my agenda, you can count me in.

Seems fair enough interest now, so let's proposed some dates :
will it be somewhere end of october, november or december ?
Leave me some feedback, and we'll plan something.
Next q : who's familiar in Antwerp to find a location to do a shooting ?
We need our local members here !

OK, I'm pondering if I can help. I live ~20 km east of Antwerp and if I know far enough in advance I might be able to help coordinate.

What's the custom, saturday or sunday (or weekday). Just some options (looking for other suggestions, this plan would be feasible to walk)
1 Start at the central station (very nice old "cathedral" style)
2 Zoo (right next door)
3 Walk through Keizerlei/Meir (major shopping area)
4 Grote Markt and the little streets and alleys around it
5 Walk along River Schelde
6 Old docks around "het eilandje"
7 Back towards central station along "de leien"

How do most people come, especially if it is by train this would work quite well. I am open to other suggestions for an entirely different approach. I'm on Dyxum less than 3 month and have never participated in your meetings, so don't know your customs.

About my sleeve...
How about this: Having a Dyxum meeting where you can try all the Sony lenses, the A700 and probably also all of the accesoires at a nice location, suited for most kinds of photography, somewhere near Nijmegen at the end of November?

During this week I'll get more details, so stay tuned. ;-)

How about this Grub ? Sounds pretty cool, putting a 600/4 on my 7D
In this respect it might be the best to wait for exact date and plae before proceeding with the next benelux meet. Anxiously waiting

OK fellow Benelux dyxummers,

Antwerp can't beat that, so I will wait until enough time after Nijmegen so all the new lenses that get ordered have arrived. Probably early spring will be a better option to take pictures vs. December or so.

Hope I can make end November in Nijmegen, as "new toys for boys" always interest me.

It will be 10 November, not at the end of November. The rest of the information will follow Tuesday.

Maybe we should slowly start planning the Antwerp meeting, I haven't taken many serious shot after the last meeting.
How about March or April?

@ Grubeater,
Great idea. I'm willing to help.
Dirk made a suggestion when we met to also try and include the ghost town of Doel in our tour. If sufficient people would come by car this is manageble and give a lift to the ones who come by train. Let's get some reactions to that.

I'm open most weekends in March/April, except March 15/16 and April 20.

Mmm Antwerp would be nice.

Just a remark on "Doel": It's a trip that can take a lot off time, just by driving and "organizing" (aka who goes with who and how to drive).

Antwerp on itself has some nice places, so I find it not usefull to add Doel.

Alain

According to my route planner it's 24 min by car and relatively easy from the central station/rooseveltplaats to reach if we take the Waaslandtunnel.
Agree there's plenty of good stuff we can do without driving somewhere else so we don't have to go there, but let's take a poll after we've got a date and a list of participants.

Doel is nice...

you have nice polder views and the harbor. And for the ultra zoom dudes you have Het Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe (birdies)

Like Alian say's the Doel area is nice to "wander around".
But if someone from Antwerp takes up the challenge of a "photo tour" then I would be very interested - I only know the city by night ;).

Seems there is a slight preference for April. OK by me, more chance of good weather and the days are longer.

So let's throw out 3 days (all saturdays):
+ 1st choice April 19
+ 2nd choice April 26
+ 3rd choice April 12

Either post here or send me a PM and when I have sufficient reactions I'll post what the majority availability is.

I personally have more dates available, but if we want to fix something we need to get specific.

Hey DaveK, others.
Forgot to mention, if there's other saturdays in March, April or early May that would suit you let's mention those as well, in case we can't find a suitable date among these 3. Assume for now we'll stick to saturdays, unless there are great objections.

I know it's still far away but sofar only four reactions and April 12 is OK for all the 4 (both other only 2).
Sunday is fine for me as well, less people in the street (so not so good for street shooters) but the quiet atmosphere might help with other style pictures. A vote, or other strong opinions ? All fine with me.

I'd like to come too. Any date will be fine for me.

On Saturdays you would be able to enter shops, or at least have a clear view during window shopping. Gold, diamonds, chinese supermarket, the evenings will be more colourfull too. Trying to get into churches to take pictures from genuine Rubens' or into museums will probably be easier (opening hours) then on Sundays.

A clear advantage for Sundays will be the free parking in town, but I can advise to park on the other side of the Schelde (Linkeroever) and take the tram (metro) that goes underneath it. Its fast and you don't need to change. One of the side-seeing things I can recommend is the pedestian tunnel that goes underneath the Schelde.

Any suggestions for the date> before or after summer holidays ?

I'm all for it. I've heard good stories about Planckendael but have never been there.

For me after the summer probably works better. The preparations and exams of my daughters will start late May and will take us through late June and after that we'll be busy getting them off to camps and our own vacation. So for me (very) late August or September is probably best.

Probably will want to start checking dates by early-June to get it on people's busy calendars in that period. Took about that time to fix the last April date.

I hope I can make it too this time. Early June is still possible for me.

Ever since I bought my A100 (april '07) I wanted to shoot at a zoo, but I have never made the time to actually go there (and Rotterdam Blijdorp-Zoo is just around the corner for me)... R'dam Zoo has an amazing 'under-the-sea-traverse' which should allow for some great shots!

I'd never heard of Planckendael, but I like the website, so I'd like to come! A decently bright and sunny day would be preferable so I can finally book some quality-time with my SAL75-300 (of which I'm sure it can produce nice results if used correctly). Otherwise, I'll bring my Beercan, which has never let me down.

And around June I should be having my new walk-around Tamron 17-50/2,8 and maybe a Tamron SP 90/2,8Macro OR Sigma EX 70/2,8Macro (still deciding, difficult choice as both are very good and have seperate pros and cons). Is there something of a butterfly-greenhouse at Planckendael?

As I understand it, both Planckendael and Blijdorp are Zoos with extensive breeding-programs for almost-extinct species of insects and animals. Also, both are trying very hard to emulate the natural habitats of the 'kept' animals.

And while it's true that the animals live in captivity, for some animals that very captivity is about the only reason they're (still) around... Indeed it's biased, they are still around, but in captivity.

Anyway, before this turns into a pro-and-con-Zoo-topic, if there are other options for a Dyxum-meeting I'll be happy to see them (just bring me somewhere I've never been )

A zoo as we understand a zoo is probably not a natural environment but at least animals have a longer life span as in the wild ... and in some zoos they are pampered ... I don't try to justify anything but those are the facts ...

...that is the eternal excuse...to try to save extinct species there is no zoo needed, only biologists, a lab, and money, not here in Belgium or the Netherlands, but in the natural habitats all over this planet...trying to breed almost-extinct species in zoos is just the same as building highly sophisticated medical units in prisons...there's a far better, far more direct and far more effective way to save these species: simple respect for life and nature, and a radical stop to exploitation of animals and natural resources...next time you visit one of our animal brothers and sisters in a zoo, try and look directly in their eyes, and say: sorry, but we need you to be here so we can save some species on the brink of extinction...animals have feelings, intellect, a heart, a brain, a soul, they develop, they create, they communicate...we are not the masters of the universe...

...as for interesting and original alternatives: why not organize a meet-and-shoot day in a prison where real criminals are kept?...and i'm only half-joking...

...if i had the choice between a longer life-span plus life-long pampering in a prison and a natural, sane, probably shorter but totally free life in my real habitat, i would not hesitate a second...don't you see and understand that we think we are superior and that we know what's best for animals we are only starting to know a bit better - both on a physiological and psychological level - since perhaps a few dozen years?...we are only fooling ourselves and trying to find excuses...we are guilty of putting living beings in prison for life, totally against their choice, totally against nature, and totally without them being able to defend themselves...look into the eyes of a tiger in a zoo, look really well, and then look at a photo of a Bengal tiger in India and see how different the look in the eyes is!...we photographers are used to the saying that one can see the soul in a person's eyes...the soul of a tiger in prison is a dying soul...

I'm sure that no-one would support the inappropriate housing of animals in unsuitable enclosures - there have been great strides in recent years in improving animal welfare in zoos and parks (but of course that doesn't mean that there isn't still plenty of room for improvement).

Can I ask that we be respecting of different viewpoits folks...

I see that the plankendael discussion has already started.

1) summer is fine by me, BUT if it's really hot the animals just tend to sleep so there isn't much action going on.

2) there are no butterflies in planckendael, there is a big greenhouse with plants and birds though.
If you like butterflies you can go to the 'vlindertuin' in knokke, you can combine it with het zwin which is a haven for birds.

3) Would it make sense to see if we could get hold of a guide to get a tour of the park ? maybe even behind the curtains (achter de schermen).
This would propably cost some money or we could agree to give a copy of our pictures to the park ....

4) I think that most of the 'inmates' of these parks are bred in captivity which means that if you set them free they would die.
But I feel that it's important to give children the opportunity to see live animals and teach them that nature is precious and needs to be treasured.
PS : plankendael is a very natural animal park with lots of space.

I'm in if I can make it, looking forward to see all you BDD's and DDD's again.

What's the general period we're looking at. I could do some weekends late June/1st half July or then again more options 2nd half August/September. 2nd period is less busy, but depending date first is not ruled out.

I'm in, from 17 July to 10 August is my holiday so please choose a date there....

Posted By: pegelli
Date Posted: 06 June 2008 at 07:49
Let's start testing if we can get a quorum:
How about July 12, 13, 19 or 20
Post your preferences/impossibilities and we'll see.
Other than setting date/time not a lot of "organization" is required.
If it doesn't work out we will have to start testing Late August/September.

Agree it's going slow, but 2 is a bunch, 3 is a crowd so if you're OK it's on and we'll see who will join later (It's still more than a month away)

I have no preference for saturday 19 or sunday 20, so Gregory or Dave any preference from your side? If we can fix the final date I think we'll get more subscriptions.
@DLNY, I think it's in the period you could come and if you have to baby-sit again just bring them along. It's a zoo out there so they'll love it

Dave, others, if you like we can meet up and car-pool from near Antwerp to Planckendaal (which is near Mechelen)

OK that makes 4 now.

Any objections against the 20th ?

We can keep the 19th as a back-up but if we go then Alain has to leave earlier.

Just checked the website, park is open from 10-19 hours in July and August.

No extra takers yet, but there's still a week. If you're still pondering it's time to make up your mind and decide to come

Just to throw something out for the others, how about meeting 12:00 near the entrance ? I'm flexible for earlier and later as well.

11:00 is fine for me as well. Just threw something out to get us started. I live a lot closer than you Alain, DLNY, iGRF what do you think?

DaveK, we can also meet at 11:00 and then pick up the others at 12:00. It's not as complicated as predicting our snail pace through Antwerp City Center.

Knowing DaveK he's probably more tempted if you bring your D3 and allow him to test it, especially if you got around to getting some good glass with it.

Temperature outlook is 19 deg C and a 25% chance of rain so maybe bring some extra clothes and/or a pair of long stockings

For the rest of Dyxum : just watch our group shot to see how this ended

Well Gerry mentioned once he was tempted to sell all Minolta/Sony stuf to buy a D3... that's one I would like to hold in real life...

Not the D300. That one is as semi-pro as the A700.. I'm not interested..

And the rain? I'm glad all my stuff is weathersealed! never had any problems in the rain.

No problem. We all had our doubts about the sanity of the event driving there and the first hour was pretty wet as well.

It finally stopped raining around 12:15 and at 5 we had a beer in the sun . We even did a BF (Beer Focus) test and achieved blur and burp free pictures

You can see the pics http://www.dyxum.com/dforum/forum_posts.asp?TID=33814 - here . Not a lot there yet and due to vacations etc. (I leave this coming thursday) probably the # of pictures will grow very slowly in the coming days and weeks.

See you next time !

Great, the more the merrier so welcome to the forum and the benelux group.

Someone from luxembourg, that's interesting.
I would love to have a meet in lux, great nature and interesting cities overthere.
Can you function as a guide ?
It would be nice to combine a hike in the forest and a nice meal somewhere in a interesting town or something.
