Thought it was time we had a thread devoted to life and sport on the water.

Here's some money sitting around at Auckland Harbour's basin. All shot with the a700 and the CZ 16-80, and processed from jpg files.

I'm curious how much is such a yacht (although they say that if you ask how much is it then it is definitely not for you ) - I presume right around the price of the Flagship

Larry Ellison of Oracle fame had a "yacht" in Auckland for the Americas Cup -- a floating gin palace that was about the size of a small hotel -- the Rising Sun, at 454 feet, is the longest or second longest privately owned boat in the world.

Some other facts about Larry's yacht The Rising Sun:

Length: 452.75ft (138 m) long
Cruising speed: 28 knots
Four diesels giving an output of 48 000 horsepower.
Production cost: US$200 million+
Total living space: 8 000 square meters.
Huge inside swimming pool
Extensive wine cellar
A cinema
Basketball court that doubles as a helicopter pad
Suites for 16 guests
82 rooms on five storeys
Space for private submarine

He would not take my offer of a downpayment.

Most of the yachts with sails that are there now start at a mere US$80,000.

Nice ones Roy, and the last reminds me of a place on the Isle of Harris in the Hebrides. About the only buildings were the pub and a kirk at the top of the hill.

The Balcutha is a late 19th century, metal hulled tall ship. It's anchored in San Francisco Bay now.

The next couple are really poor photos (bad light, slow lens), but worth seeing the crew's berths, in the background amongst the machinery

compared to the Captain's quarters

And a final diversion, there was also an old ferry there that had a goldmine of classic cars from the period it was used, just a sample

Some time ago, to my surprise, I saw a large number of boats, near the "harbour" of Enschede (which seems to be an exaggeration to be called that for someone coming from Rotterdam), a large number of boats, not in the water but on the quay beside the water and here is a first shot of that somewhat motley collection:

I'll come back to this later.

Here are 2 examples of "downeast" lobster boats. Downeast refers to a time when boats of this type were predominately built "downeast" on the coast of Maine. "Lily" is an example of a purpose built lobster boat - in this case her purpose of tuna fishing - hence the very tall tower used to spot tuna on the surface. Removed for storage is a very long pulpit (a long narrow metal walkway with a railing) - 20' or so that attaches to the bow of the boat - where a harpooner would stand to throw the harpoon at the tuna on the surface. The tuna targeted by boats such as this are a minimum of 72" in lenght - a fish that size is @ 250lbs. The bluefin tuna grow to in excess of 1,000lbs...

The other is a more "general purpose" lobster boat - most likely used for recreational use - cruising, fishing, etc.

Enjoy.

Two cruisers for taking tours in the Antwerp Harbour.
Testing Marjoleine's 80-200/2.8 G @ 2.8 during the Benelux Dyxum meeting. Very sharp I would say

This is my daughter-in-law Penny, taken with my 7D the week before it turned into an a700 just before Christmas 07.

Penny has just been selected as the final member of the 2008 UK Olympic Sailing Team (Laser Radial) and my son is her coach.
Fingers crossed for a podium.

@ bonneville. Congrat's to you all. Let us know how it turns out (I'm sure she will let you take a picture of the medal she brings back).

Will you be able to join them in China and post many majestics pics ?

Thank you dilettante & pegelli. Yes we are VERY proud.

I have a link http://www.brianyoungphotography.co.uk/brianyoungphotography/index.html - here (select Penny for Gold) with lots more photos from the same weekend training and racing.

But it is unlikely we'll be able to go to China.

And this is my Russ all at sea

For your sake I hope there are no Kiwi women racing against her.

All the best to "your team".

Thank you, I really love the look of old sailing ships. However, I get horribly sea sick. So I admire them from afar....

I've learnt a bit more since I've taken these but they're only 18 months old . They were all taken with my KM5D with either the 18-70 or 75-300 lenses I have/had.

Javea Harbour, Dusk

Aranel Beach, Sunken Boat & Nightlife Bars

Javea Harbour, Night

Dry Dock...

I think this definitely qualifies as a yacht - taken in NY Harbor during Fleet Week last week.

A fire boat showing off

Definitely not a yacht!! - Actually a fast attack boat

From the stern

Yes I've got dust bunnies. I think they are in the lens itself...

One last shot of the Lady Liberty and a warship

Good shots flattie.

Those dust bunnies are on the sensor. Read up about dust busting in your manual, and try a blower first.
