I agree with Bernd, he looks like a Guinea Fowl to me too!
It was a stunning day today (except for the smell of smoke in the air) so I had some fun shooting some of the backyard locals!

@ianmarsh: these birds are indeed guineafowls which are nearly always monogamous. Probably these are of the type called the "helmeted guineafowl".
In the Netherlands they are kept also (they do not live here free!) and are called: parelhoen (literally translated into English: pearlhen)

The first three seem a bit "light"; the last is spot on for colour depth, and a nice shot, like the one above.

Hi everybody
First post here, I enjoy shooting nature, sunsets and birds (and sometimes candids), trying to improve those bird shots, I know this is not the critics corner but if you fell like C&C, just dont hold back, it is most welcome.
Most of the shots taken at Chester County, PA. Mostly no PP, rarely some cropping, Presently shooting with kit lenses, Sony 75-300mm. and Sony 18-70mm.

I agree, Chester County is a great place to shoot. Last weekend at French Creek, w/in 3 hours, besides shooting fly fisherman, I was able to shoot redheaded woodpecker, blue heron, hawk and a beaver.
I will definitely post more at this wonderful forum .

Edited the post the little pic have an intact exif,
Thx guys, yes it's with the tammy, it has the potential to make good pictures but it's not that easy ( at slow speeds), been experimenting with SSS on and off. Best results seem to come if I support the lens at the front (sss on) so I allow vertical movement of the camera.
The focus speed isn't that great either, used my beercan that's been inactive for a while and it felt lightning fast compared to the tammy. But I scared the birds with it's clonking focus sounds.

I've never left the macro behind. It's actually quite a versatile lens.
The bird was too close to use a longer prime. I'd like to get back there and put in some serious time with a camera.

Here is a series of images taken over the past several months since I purchased my Sony A100 last May. Over the last year I have obtain several Minolta lenses to make up my kit but most all of these are taken using a Minolta 75-300 f:4.5/5.6 big beer can a really great lens design from the mid 1980's. All metal design and just wonderful optics. This is my second posting here and I hope you enjoy my images.
Hawk in poring rainfall 100% crop of original taken with Alpha100 and Minolta 75-300 f:4.5/5.6 big beer can through a glass panel door. Not a very good image but I really like the hawk.
Same hawk, tree, camera & lens but on a much nicer day. . . the moment of take off.
And yet another . . . I think it is getting a bit use to me being about the pastures of our farm.
A pair of Ibis.
I think this is an Egret but maybe somebody can identify it for me???
Not sure of this ones species either???
Flock of Plastic Pink Flamingos . . . Just for the fun of it, sorry I just had to share this one with you I just love the heck out of it and laugh whenever I come across it in my images

Greetings,
I have been lurking for a very long while, and this is my first post.
It is featuring our newly weaned peachface lovebird.
This fine creature is as yet unnamed, awaiting DNA gender test results.
I have worked to shrink the file without damaging the image, I hope it makes it to your monitors properly.
DOOOH! For some reason I can't put the image in this post after trying for WAY too long so here's the link...

In contrast a very beautiful bird: the Golden pheasant, but very difficult to photograph because he kept running and jumping through the cage, I think to show a quiet female (which I forgot to photograph) how nimble he was:

Yes- I took the northern-most platform so as to have the sun (mostly) behind me. I had the platform to myself for a couple of hours Alas I did have to return before dusk, so no low-light shots of the sun-setting and West coast surf could be attempted...
Here's a couple more from the session:

Those gannets are wonderfull :).
When i was in London these things would literally eat out of your hand flying off to a perch about 1.5m away, now i am in Denmark it is well neigh impossible to get within 10 m of them.

Chthoniid: That first gannet photo of yours is awesome, second and third are nice as well.
Anyone know what this is? My guess would be it's a Whitethroat but I'm not quite sure.
And a 100% crop of that picture:
BTW: Has anyone here ever been able to shoot a flying Barn Swallow. I made about 30 shots of them but 0 were acceptable. They keep changing their direction very fast.

Hi Jelle:
With the help of the Dutch book "Zien is kennen" (english: "To see is to know") I could ascertain that this is indeed (in English) the whitethroat (in Dutch: grasmus).
I've never tried to photograph a flying barn swallow but can well imagine that that is very difficult indeed and that several ten-fold tries are necessary before you have one acceptable picture. Success with any further tries

Thanks Frankman, tpetpe and Dipsausje. There are much fewer gannets at Muriwai this time of the year, but the compensation is fewer people .

@winwalloe: as far as I can see this is a female greenfinch, at least when I look in my birding book "Zien is Kennen"(in english: to see is to know)
and the second definitely is a male blackbird.

Thank you but don't be fooled by the PP, the lens isn't really sharp.
This one from today is better though. The bird was standing much closer and I didn't have to crop the shot as badly. But this lens definitely have big limitations.

Roseate spoonibill with some early morning reflections in the background. The colors on these always look a little washed out by the time I've processed them for posting; maybe I should overdo the saturation a little bit before converting to JPEG??

Not that I know this bird, but it looks pretty good like it is Roy -- you don't want to change it into a flamingo.

Thanks brettania. It's breeding season here, so their plumage has really bright, saturated colors; I think of it as "violent pink". I'll try a few things, but no species-change surgery, I promise.

It's good to see all the bird shots from the northern hemisphere now that the weather is warming up. However, with winter coming on, the variety of birds is rapidly diminshing. Here are a few from a quiet week:
