Nice ones Michel. Very sharp and I like the first best.

This is probably where the 70-200/2.8 SSM shines vs. the 80-200. 1,2 vs. 1,8 meter minimum focus distance is a big difference !

Thanks Pieter .
Yes, i was very close with the lens, object was very small. Must admit that i choose a too big aperture on the first one - think f/5.6 would be better for the subject but i wanted a smooth background.

Wish I had something better to start this thread off with, but I figure it is early 'shroom season for other locales as well, and maybe some of you other shooters can come up with something better.

The top mushroom is about the size of a small pizza (9" diameter or so (maybe 22-30cm?))

Impressive fungi alpha_in_exile, it's a pity they don't stand out a bit more vs the background, but still nice for "off season".

Also here in Belgiun fungi are very scarce in spring, but I still found this one last weekend while cycling and looking for May pic-a-day shots. Some kind of sulphurfungus at the foot of a dead tree:

Hi BillCB,
Outstanding photo, To my untrained , in mushroom ID eye, they look like Ceasar amanita (sp) which I thought I read was edible. I looked at your website and I really like your landscapes. It looks like you could use this link: http://www.dyxum.com/dforum/topic28010_post293333.html#293333
It describes how to post photos from many sites to Dyxum. I had lots of trouble when I started.

Nice shots, pegelli, Bard & Bill.

@pegelli - I'm thinking I might use flash & some PP to make 'em stand out a bit more next time, if I bother to reshoot. Flash, when well controlled, can of course help isolate the subject, but I'm still working on the 'well controlled' part.

@ captmolo, I think #2 isn't allowed on Dyxum, looks too much like troll

just kiddin, nice shots and by the looks of the exif they were taken this morning and it's not really prime fungus time. What you might try next time is maybe a bit of fill in flash (can be the pop-up) with a slightly negative flash exposure comp, so it just gives a bit more pop and structure to the fungus without overwhelminging the shot too much.

Pegelli, i will be sure to think about that the next time i walk about. I have never thought about negative flash comp, so it is really some good advice for me :)

When is fungus primetime by the way?

Heres another one, just so i dont post without a picture to follow.. kind of rotten and probably way over the fungus primetime :)

Nice one captmolo, looks indeed on the way down but a nice picture.

Prime time for fungi over here in Belgium is Sep/Oct/Nov. You can indeed find them outside that period, but during those month it's impossible not to find them.

Here's an old shot of mine from October 2007, just PP'd today and not posted before. Thanks for inspiring me to go back and look at some old shots

Very interesting perspective falconsusi. I usually take a lens that's 10-20 times longer, but this certainly works very nice and gives great context.

Nice colors KoBra, In our area they start showing up as well, but given the long dry spell they're quite late this year.

Here's one of the same species, a bit further along that I shot during a walk last sunday:

@ digiton: congrats on making the exhibition with your second, I think its a fantastic shot (sharpness, detail, color, compo). It just "sits"

@ Cekari: don't know why it wouldn't count

@ mediman30: nice puffballs, did you use fill in flash? Anyway, I think the dark background works very well here

@outback88: nice shot, I think it's an "inky top" in it's early stages. Then they look more like easter eggs

Here's two from me, both octoberfest outtakes with the 200/2.8HS:

http://pegelli.smugmug.com/Other/200910/9850242_qyrcp/1/#698070550_CHzec-A-LB">

Note the little fly posing on the left fungus in the last shot, it was really trying to look its best

Growing on a tree stump in our back yard. shot with the Min 100mm MACRO in really poor light, hence the f2.8 exposure.

Interesting growth SpooX, only WB looks a bit cool (or is that on purpose?)

Not too bashful Vollert, we're very kind here and can help with supporting critique

SteveMRose, I like it, small dof makes it interesting with lower layers slowly fading out. Only would have pointed a tad more up, so the lowest ring wouldn't be cut off by the border.

Here's another one from our Inky Top explosion :

Good stuff digiton, bad hairday is a hoot, never seen something like that. It almost seems one fungus species feasting on another, or is it a single species that grows like this?

The second is just beautiful, composition, light color, all sit very well together.

Such nice images of such great fungi...
Why can't I ever find them so nice, always holes and other damages... :-/

Great setup Pavel, the 200/4 is such a nice lens it's almost impossible to understand... a tad slow as medium short range 200 only... but it's sharpness, bokeh and versatility is unbeaten... and comes with a price tho :-)

Digiton that bad har day is wonderfull, i didn't think that these things made fruiting bodies long enough to be attacked by another fungi in that way.

Very small fungi.
