My photos were a bit oof (though this one wasn't)...I was doing manual focus without my glasses...
Anyway, here's a shot of my wife...she'll kill me if she finds out
I've been trying to improve upon my portraiture abilities...I was happy to get a nice exposure on her with the bright white background...I also know the 300mm f4 with a 1.4 TC is not the ideal portrait lens set-up (I love birds)...I would have had more of my family, but as I said, they were all a bit oof (stinkin glasses) C&C definitely welcome!!

These images are for a portfolio profile shoot. I was shooting together with another 2 Nikon D300 boys and another SONY A300.
The Nikon lighting set-up were 3 Aurora professional studio strobes with softbox. They were shooting at f20 aperture mostly. Our Sony lighting set-up was a modest WL-CLS fired by the F58 and F36 shooting at constant f5.6 aperture on the trusty kitlens SAL18-70.

Excellent captures mee. I like the way you've held the whites together in the first shoY. Both images show excellent colour. Very impressive, especially since they were taken with the kit lens. You should post these images in the lenses sample images subforum http://www.dyxum.com/dforum/sample-images_forum28.html - here . They are inspirations for what can be achieved with the "kit lens".

Thank you for the compliments Frank. I have added them to the http://www.dyxum.com/dforum/sony-af-dt-18-70-f35-56-sal-1870_topic11412_page3.html - kitlens SAL1870 sample images here .
It was a little tough holding the whites, especially, due the nature of the silk wardrobes that were very reflective to light. Since there is another guy shooting with the a300, and another darker skin tone model and outfit (picture below), I somehow try to set the flashlights so that both of us can shoot at the same f5.6 all through the session using the same flashlights via WL mode. When there were changes we want to make, they were only minor ISO and shutter speed in manual mode adjustment to suit our individual taste, and forget about the lights. It was difficult to move the lights around since there were another two Nikon D300 shooters with three studio strobes and large softboxes. Both the Nikon and Sony systems were able to shoot together at the same time without having trigger conflicts on one another. So we manage to save the models time and effort, by shooting their same poses at the same time. The F58 and F36 did pretty well in recycle time for the two of us Sony shooters. Batteries were changed after every model post to avoid misfires. The F58 do overheat at times but not the F36.
However we managed to pull everything through and produce quite a decent and modest results.

Ponisch, when viewed at actual pixels size of the A100, details are not that good especially hair details. I guess it will be worse with higher MP sensors like the A700 and A350. But of course if prints are going to be made as large as billboard sizes, I wouldn't be using the sony system. I would choose medium format of the P-40 from Phase One.
Below is Actual Pixels crop from ACR v5.3 converted to JPEG for posting viewed at 1920 x 1080 screen resolution.

Here are a few from a local strobist meetup, we were offered space at a local gym with access to the furnace room and roof, made for a fun shoot! All shot with A100 and kit lens and one flash with umbrella.
Flash High to the right adjusted exposure time to dim background
F11 1/50 26mm iso100
Flash left reflected from umbrella, I wanted fairly hard light to emphasize the grungy-ness of the surroundings, but I'm not sold on the hard shadows on her face, I guess I will invest in a reflector.
F5.6 1/60 18mm iso100
Enjoy, C&C welcome!

Original image
Using Sony IDC I changed creative style to B/W
added 1.5 stops of exposure
increased contrast +40
increased white point on Tone curve until I was happy
lowered black point to bring detail back to hair and keep pupils jet black.
Edit: added original and pp done

Shoot over exposed and pull white point down in pp. That is a quick a dirty. But, light colored backgrounds and light subjects work the best.

for the background

easier but more expensive is to have a look for a lastolite hilite background
or cheaper :) put a white scrim (even cheaper version is a cheap white bedsheet) in front of a large window when sun is shining in through it

A few with my favorite portrait subject
OK, OK, you can take it, but I am a bit sunburned...
Yes, I like that look in your eye
It's the apple making me laugh
I'd rest even better without that camera always pointed at me
