IanB great goosander closeups! A similar bird here on West coast of FL is the Red Breasted Mergnaser which winters in the gulf.

Great clarity Brian and Ianb that Goosander looks sharp enough to me , don't know that the 70/400 you were asking about is going to give you any adavantage except for the zoom, having said that I love it, and having just shot alongside Geardown with his 300 prime it does have it's advantages. For our Wren shots he was way back and it could have been awkward for him to have got a shot at all, whereas I was almost on toop of him. Just out of interest lent him my Kenko 1.4 TC which he thought very slow to auto focus compared to his minolta so don't go that route.
Cheers. Brandy.

Stan I'm shooting at Woodgate just south of Bundaberg, met up with Geardown who prompted me to post the following -:
The two frames taken before Richards great head on shot, I was to the side, didn't know which to focus on and the action was so fast I didn't get either one.
Cheers Brandy.
PS I have it from an expert [Richard's wife] that what I have been calling a Brahminy Kite [the brown ones, no white breast] has in fact been a Whistling Kite. [tail feathers are different.]

great shots. like the series with the white egret
I'll give it a try too.
Frankman earlier said, you should start with seagulls to give birding a try.
Here you are. I was feeding them with one hand and shooting them with the other (CZ1680).
Just one to show how friendly they are when food is available
And one to finish with seagulls and go for the real stuff
and now for real (didn't need any of Frankman's advises). But I do like the effect (70200SSM)

Great shots of the whistling kite and stilts, geardown. Like you needed a noob like me to tell you that. And the seagull in front of the cliffs is very nice too dopol.
This is as best I can do of birds in the air - a Torresian Crow in the act of launching itself:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/scotartt/3804111940/">
Far from being airborne, this one is of a duck ... contemplating, I guess, in the deep shade of a tree that overhangs the lake:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/scotartt/3803276773/">
"What are you looking at?" says one of his friends, contemplating me, photographing him (the duck is a species commonly called a 'hardhead', it's a male):
http://www.flickr.com/photos/scotartt/3803263713/">
Here is a little pied cormorant, it was surprising to get close to one of these, they are not usually tolerant of people, I have found:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/scotartt/3803299645/">
This one is a Straw-necked Ibis looking very iridescent in the sunshine (I have ones where the iridescence is even better, but the pose of the bird isn't so good, unfortunately):
http://www.flickr.com/photos/scotartt/3803287301/">
Clicking on the photos will take you to the flickr page with all the EXIF. All of these were shot on Sunday 9 August 2009 (yesterday, for me) at the UQ Lakes, St Lucia, Brisbane, QLD. Mostly shot with the Sony 55-200 f/4-5.6 kit lens zoom (I did use the Minolta 50mm f/3.5 macro a little, but not for any of these shots). I think about 170mm is the limit of that lens useful zoom before it goes not just soft, but ugly harsh soft, and you have to be around f/8 too once past 150mm, I super-need a beercan or a 'G' lens equivalent.
